This is the first of what will be occasional episodes about common health issues we see in practice. Beware - Jules may get a little ranty/sweary at times as she goes over how to spot the symptoms, how to test, why your doctor didn’t pick it up, and what to do about it. In this episode, she is talking about hypothyroidism and what to do if your doctor says you’re fine but you’ve still got all the symptoms. Meet Jo Whitton – an amazing wholefoods cook, an author and a recipe developer. But she’s also one of the nicest, most caring, most giving and generous people in the Australian wellness industry. She was also one of the very first guests on my podcast (episode 9 to be exact), back in 2016 when it was called Shiny Healthy You. Since then, we’ve shared the stage together at wellness events, shared air BnBs at events (where I’m pretty sure I kept her up till at least 2am), and shared organic ice-cream in Brunswick Heads. Meet naturopath Vanessa Lamaro. We went through college together in Melbourne, and not too long after that she moved to the Sunshine Coast. I eventually moved here too, which means that now we can have the occasional cheeky wine and chat about all things naturopathy. She niched herself in the fertility space, and has also expanded on that to cover women’s hormonal health of ALL ages… because reproductive health spans much further than just having babies – it often determines your quality of life waaaay past the age of 35, 40, 45 and onwards. Sometimes at this age we get forgotten about in the medical system, because – if you’ve got period troubles but you’re not planning to get pregnant, just go on the pill and carry on, right? Hmmmm… I think we can do better than that. If ever there was a niche that was sooooo needed in Australia right now, this episode’s guest has definitely found it. When I came across her work recently I was like “OMG, of course! Thank god for this human!” Meet Hayley Dawson – a naturopath who works with people living in remote and rural areas, people who don’t have access to naturopathic care, and get this… she even has a program that’s just for farmers! Talk about a lightbulb moment. So many of our farmers are facing crisis at the moment, which can seriously impact both their physical and mental health. And Hayley saw an opportunity to help. Meet Sharon Collon – she’s been a naturopathic client of mine for quite some time. I’ve watched her go through a lot with her own health issues whilst also caring for her family. But she’s been thrown a few extra challenges. You see, a couple of the members of her household have ADHD. Like any good mum, she tried everything under the sun to help her family, including the GAPS diet, wholefoods, paleo, the RPAH diet, and countless doctors and health practitioners. But what she ended up finding worked the best was developing systems and routines in her household that created calmness and eased overwhelm. “I saw the statistics that they were four times more likely to commit crime, commit suicide, end up in jail or become an addict, and there was just no way that I was going to let that happen to my beautiful little boy.” So I’ve got her on the show to give you a different perspective on helping your anxious or sensitive kids (and maybe even your anxious and sensitive partners/husbands!). If you’ve been following me for a while on social media, you may have noticed that I take off to Fiji 4 times a year to work on a nutrition project. You see, when I’m not sorting out women with adrenal fatigue and pyrrole disorder in my clinic and through my online program, I moonlight at the Fiji Nutrition Coordinator for Involvement Volunteers International (also known as IVI). IVI are a charity organisation based on the Gold Coast, sending volunteers to communities all round the world, including the Pacific Islands, Bali, Philippines, Greece, India and Nepal. In this episode, follow me to Fiji where we conduct over 800 health checks on local resort workers, villages, and communities in need. Fiji has just been named the top country in the world for Type 2 diabetes, an honour that no one ever wants to receive. So there’s lots of work to do to help these people become healthier! Along with Involvement Volunteers International (IVI), I’ve been heading up a team of nutritionists, naturopaths, dieticians, nurses and other allied health professionals, to do health checks and education for as many people as possible. In this episode, you will hear:  What it’s like to be a volunteer What it’s like to live in the REAL Fiji (as opposed to the resorts) What the locals eat – both traditional Fijian food (yum!) and also the junk that’s available What we are doing to help How we are hoping to have an impact And how you can help! SHY 70: A medical and nutrition volunteer project in Fiji

This episode is soooo important if you are looking for meaningful gifts this Christmas (or if you just want to treat yourself and give back at the same time!). Jody Vassallo has some mad skills when it comes to creating healthy recipes. She’s worked with everyone from Donna Hay to the Jamie Oliver franchise, and there’s every chance that if you’ve bought a recipe book in the last 20 years, you’ve seen recipes that have been developed by her or styled by her. And that’s not all – she is also a yoga teacher and Ayurvedic coach, so you know that her own work is always about nourishing meals and healthy, wholefood cooking. Her own cookbooks, Beautiful Food and The Yogic Kitchen, are legendary, and well worth a look. BUT… That’s not even why I’ve invited her on the show! You know… sometimes you come across someone who is just a bloody good human. And Jody is also one of the most generous and giving people I know. When times are tough she steps it up, gathers her people and launches into action. Recently the drought in many rural areas of Australia escalated to a point where farmers were undergoing unprecedented grief and suffering. And she saw an opportunity. And so Farmer – The Cookbook was born – a fundraising effort that will honestly knock your socks off. Meet Kristy-Lee Rackham – a holistic Registered Nurse based in the Noosa Shire in Queensland. She’s also an Energy Coach and multi-modality practitioner who helps people get lasting relief from stress, anxiety and chronic pain without medication. Kristy-Lee’s superpower is being able to talk about both science and energy medicine in equal amounts, without the two paradigms contradicting each other. STNH 1: New year, new beginnings, and a name change!

First, they deny it. Then they reject it. Then they accept it. Then they claim it. “We are in a medical renaissance. In the next five years, there’s going to be tremendous opposition.” When interviewing guests for my podcast, there have been a couple of “pinch me” moments where I’ve sat down with someone who’s actually a MASSIVE deal to me. Someone I’ve looked up to for being a trailblazer and leader in the industry. This is one such occasion. Dr Albert Mensah is the co-founder of Mensah Medical in Warrenville, IL, USA. Dr. Mensah has extensive clinical experience in biochemical imbalances, and began his career in the field at the former Pfeiffer Treatment Center under the direction of William J. Walsh, PhD, president of the non-profit Walsh Research Institute (if anyone knows me well, they’ll know that I consider this institute to be the absolute leader in the world for pyroluria/pyrrole disorder). Dr. Mensah presents at conferences internationally, participates in physician training programs, and consults with health care professionals, and he currently serves as a faculty member of the Walsh Research Institute Medical Practitioner Education Program. As a physician in this specialised field since 2005, Dr. Mensah has treated over 3,000 patients with advanced targeted nutrient therapy. He serves on the board at Walsh Research Institute and serves as a clinical instructor for WRI’s international doctor training programs around the world. His current practice includes the management of cognitive disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, behaviour/learning disorders, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, anxiety syndromes, childhood and adult schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s Disease as well as family medicine. But what you will hear in this interview is that Dr Mensah is so much more. He is in fact one of the most heartfelt, genuine, caring practitioners that I’ve ever had to joy to interview. Honestly. His current practice includes the management of cognitive disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, behaviour/learning disorders, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, anxiety syndromes, childhood and adult schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s Disease as well as family medicine.
