While new to the gravel scene, she has made her presence known winning Dirty Kanza 200. She resides in Truckee California, but originally is from San Francisco. Originally a road cyclist, she has found success in gravel cycling and is now pursuing a full time career in the sport. She loves long hard races and rides of attrition and is game to be at just about every gravel event. Amity is a former ultra runner turned barista and now cyclist for brands such as Allied Cycle works and Easton Sports. By the time she went to college at Fort Lewis College in Durango, she had joined the Triathlete squad and then transitioned to road cycling. Eventually Sarah found she had a knack for cyclocross where she competed at high level before gravel.  Off the bike, Sarah likes to do things in her own way and on her own terms. She is unapologetically in it for the fun and does not conform to any cycling stereotypes. She rides hard on long and on those long days, she thinks about everything and nothing. Sarah has found a place in long grueling events and there are no signs of her slowing down. The day after we recorded, she rode to an impressive third place at the SBT GRVL race behind two seasoned pros. What is striking is Sarah’s positivity and her endless energy and laughter. Some of the riders such as Ted King talk about his nervousness as he preps for a long day ahead. Throughout the race we give live updates and leapfrog the riders as we try to head back to the finish to see the riders coming in.  When we get to the finish, the riders are exhausted, wiping themselves off, drinking a cold beverage all while trying to answer questions from the press. We speak to many of the top ten finishers of Dirty Kanza including Peter Stetina, Kiel Reijnen, Joshua Berry, Alex Howes, Lachlan Morton and Taylor Phinney. For the women’s podium we speak with Alison Tetrick, Sarah Max and winner Amity Rockwell. For 2019 the route started in Sacramento and headed it’s way south finishing in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl. It was a race that featured many climbs including Rancho Cordova to South Lake Tahoe and the infamous Ontario to Mt. Baldy Stage. New for this year featured three stages for the women which included a start in Ventura county, Mt. Baldy and Pasadena stages. Absent this year was a time trial that frustrated the specialists but favored the pure climbers. This race may be known for showcasing the young riders as the last two versions have seen winners from Egan Bernal in 2018 and now Tadej Pojacar who at 20 years old is the youngest rider to win a UCI stage race. What does that mean for cycling? Simply put it means that cycling is going to get more and more popular. Lets examine some of the reasons why. It provides a bit of a safer surface to ride on since many road cyclists are hesitant to ride in traffic. It also provides an off road option for people who want to challenge themselves on a little bit of dirt. The camaraderie found in people who choose to do gravel is much more accepting and more of a casual but go hard feel. Bike technology has helped create a market for people to get on gravel and find just the right equipment to do it. Lastly events like the Canyon Belgian Waffle Ride has brought in people in droves to some of the most unique and fun cycling events in the country. We cover the 2018 iteration of the Belgian Waffle Ride and this year it did not disappoint. It started with a two day expo at the newly opened Canyon USA headquarters in Carlsbad California. There they had music, food, games, industry expo and a course reveal of the most unique one day cycling event in the country. Dave Malwitz of Gravelstoke joins us to give his perspective of the gravel phenomenon and his BWR insights. After some listener mail referencing The Resurrection of CBR episode we talk about some of the people we interviewed for the race. During the expo event the day before the event we talk to Ryan Steers of Giant Bicycles to talk about some of his preface form. During the morning of the race, which was delayed for about 30 minutes due to high demand of waffles we catch up with a few people during their pre race routine. We first get together with Brian McCulloch of Elevate KHS and he talks about his form going in to the start. He remained optimistic as he does with just about everything. After that we hit up the waffle line and catch up with Chris Guillemet who is the CEO of Velofix (also show sponsor) and talks about his pre race feelings. Jake Wells has a cyclocross background and has never done the event before. He came to podium or better and we caught up with him at the infamous bathroom line to hear how he was going to have the race unfold for him. He has the technical skills as well as the engine to do well. The defending women’s champ, Larissa Connors is always quotable and she is one of the few who is wide awake at the start and gives us her rundown of the day. Lastly Los Angeles based rider Diego Binatena of Los Angeles Bicycle Club and Base Cartel brings his road experience and team to the BWR. He goes all in with a race plan to execute a winning move that may happen. One of the people with the most experience yet not going for the overall is retired pro Tom Danielson. Now a coach, he comes into the race as a mentor but draws on some of the unique comparisons between this event and races he’s done in Europe. Once the race is off it unfolds and the final kms come down to a test of will between Ted King and Brian McCulloch. Ted was unable to come around Brian in the last corner as we get post race reactions from all of the top finishers including in the top five, Bryan Lewis (formerly of Cyclance) and Colin Strickland who is a fixture in the criterium and red hook races. On the women’s side Larissa is ecstatic and is still full of energy for the crowd and cameras and third place finisher Alison Tetrick grabs my beer mid interview as she crosses the line prior to being interviewed. Many cyclists are former triathletes who found the true joy of cycling or appreciate the tactical perspective. Of course, triathletes often have a questionable (and not always positive) reputation among the peloton.   Today we not only explore the tumultuous relationship between cyclists and triathletes, we also speak with two professionals to get their perspective.   Taylor Spivey is a world-famous ITU triathlete. She has competed internationally and currently has her sights set on success at the 2020 olympics in Tokyo. At events she rides draft legal (employs tactics that cyclists use in road races/criterium). Taylor discusses what triathletes can learn from cyclists on the local group ride and vice versa. She also listens to opinions that many cyclists share when they see a triathlete show up to a group ride. Whitney Burdzilauskas is a triathlete turned cyclist and coach. She specializes in the longer Ironman events which involve riding at your highest threshold for 112 miles per event. We spoke with her at the Oceanside 70.3 event and discussed ways cyclists can train and compete like a triathlete. She also talks about some of the key differences between the two sports. Whitney shares her unique perspective on training with cyclists for triathlons and other races, and tackles the frustrations both athletes have.     Traditionally, cycling culture is not the most accepting group. When it comes to triathletes that want to train or race with cyclists, they approach it as an entirely different sport, even though cycling accounts for a third of a triathlon. As our guests point out on the show, one of the biggest reasons for not seeing eye-to-eye is safety. I’ve personally seen and been on the receiving end of some erratic behavior from triathletes in the peloton. At times it’s a dubious relationship, however both groups can learn from each other. We chat with Robin Carpenter of Rally Cycling to talk about his life since he first joined the podcast in 2016. He has left the smaller Holowesko Citadel squad to pro continental status. That means more opportunities for bigger races in the United States like the Amgen Tour of California and races in Europe like the Tour of Denmark.  He talks about some of the current issues facing American Cycling and what it might take to be more competitive with the world tour teams. Part of the issue is that even the best cyclists are facing uncertain futures and current cyclists already need to think about the future lives after pinning on a number for a living.  Robin is a bit of a renaissance man. Living in La Jolla California, he and his wife support each other with her pursuit of a Phd and Robin, spending time becoming the next great baker of bread. He finds it more than comforting and has a real connection with the nourishment it has given people for thousands of years. He and his wife are working together to make life work for both professions. A rarity in a sport where one spouse follows the life of the other.  Robin is one of the few cyclists who has a multi year contract with a top level cycling program. He is about to finish his first year of a two year contract with Rally Cycling. Robin is already thinking about the next year and reflects on some of his experiences with his current teammates who were for most of his career, rivals.  We also chat with Josh Bonnici of Bonnici Law Group about what cyclists can and should do in the event of an accident. There is so much on this season 2 finale! Larissa Connors is quite arguably the most energetic cyclist you will ever meet. A no filter and quirky approach to interviews. She has boundless energy that she uses to her advantage on the race course. For our show, she is the only person to have ever ridden her bike (From Orange County) to do the interview. At a young age she was always an athlete. She’s tried running as well as other disciplines within cycling. Larissa has found her niche in endurance mountain bike and gravel races. She is the only cyclist who remains undefeated at 100+ mile events at 10 wins and 0 losses. Larissa is a two time winner of the Belgian Waffle Ride and Leadville 100 races. Not only does she win but she wins by many minutes over her closest competitors. Larissa splits her time between racing and her profession as a high school math teacher. She shares her love of cycling with her students as they suspect she’s a “famous” cyclist. She got into cycling while she was a student at UC Davis where she met her husband who built her a custom time trial bike. That bike design and construction led him to getting a job with Felt  Bicycles. A bike brand that Larissa now rides. Collegiate cycling opened doors for her as she now decides her own path in the cycling world. Whether it’s taking in race selfies or racing against (and sometimes) beating her idols, she always has a deep desire to go for broke and break herself physically and mentally. For more check out  The Belgian Waffle Ride is one of the biggest one day races in North America and it’s right in our backyard! In an era where races are hurting for membership, the Belgian Waffle Ride sells out quickly. The draw is the entire unique experience. You take over a thousand racers, lots of volunteers, a course with dirt, road and elevation and lots of beer and music at the end and you have it. We sit down with Adam Mills in studio and talk about coaching people for the event as well as the training camps that Source Endurance puts on for the event. People spend a year prepping and planning for this day. There is a lot that a rider will go through and the goal is to prep them for anything that can happen.  With the most recent event filled with action, we went behind the scenes and inside the race and talked to many of the participants and got their perspective of the event. First we talk with race announcer Jim Miller as we get a surprise mid interview and he gives me his race predictions for the day. No BWR event is complete without talking to the father of the event Michael Marcx. This year he didn’t race it so it’s nice to get his perspective from the race organization standpoint.  We talk with defending champ Joshua Berry of the Jelly Belly squad on how he faired this year and what hiccups he ran into. We talk with the eventual winners of the event Jesse Anthony and Larissa Connors and even though they make it look easy, they were just as tired as well but happy. No big bike event is without a few retired pros. We talk with Phil Gaimon and how he took off so fast at the start and was able to hold off the entire field just for a little while. We also talk with last years defending champion Amanda Nauman and why she was ready to quit but didn’t on the last big climb. Lastly we speak with Ted King and how events like these are good for cycling and their growth.  The BWR is no longer a local event. With seasoned professionals coming in and competing and people going to camps to try to improve their personal bests, BWR has something for everyone. Sea Otter is a multi day bike event with competitive cycling that spans from mountain to road to everything in between. Sea Otter is also known for it’s massive industry expo at the Laguna Seca Raceway. It is there that many brands get to showcase their latest and greatest products for the upcoming season. We pounded the pavement and talked to many of these brands and see what they had this year. Here are a few of some of the things we saw at Sea Otter.  Goodyear tires is a name known in automobiles and they have made an investment in cycling tires. Notably tires 25c and above on just about every discipline. Luke Musselman talks about some of the latest tires in their line. In one of our favorite companies, Jake Pantone from Enve composites talks about how they are leading the way with some of their off road options. They have a unique through axle skewers for their forks and a surefire way to keep things secure. Taylor from DT Swiss talks about some of their new gravel and cyclocross wheels. I’ve owned their hubs for years and he has shown me a tool less way to remove a cassette and hub internals. That way you just need a finger and some grease to keep it running smooth. K-edge might be some of the smaller bike accessory pieces but they collaborated with Wahoo Bolt. Tim Kelly, the brand manager at K-edge came up with an aero and clean interface for the Wahoo bolt computers. It coincidentally was the same one that a certain Peter Sagan used as he won Paris Roubaix. Jesse Bartholemew with Quarq has a new way to monitor your tire pressure in real time. It’s a sensor that sits on the valve core and senses tire pressure as the rider uses the bike. It’s a great tool for people obsessed with wanting to know additional metrics on their computers. They will start pricing at $200. SCC alumni Priscilla Savord now represents Fizik. In addition to some of their saddles they are venturing into some new aspects of the game with updated road and mountain shoes. Priscilla was found at Sea Otter dropping some knowledge and giving out espresso’s simultaneously! IRC tires has made a big investment into cycling in the United States. Bruno Suttles has ridden some great tires specifically made for events like BWR. They have a file tread with knobby edges and they run tubeless. The company has a huge following in SoCal. Giant is one of the bigger brands at Sea Otter and Andrew Juskaidas of Giant talks to us as he teases out some of the bigger things coming in just a few short months. He remains tight lipped but you know when Giant teases something, it’s going to be big! Red Shift Sports from Nor Cal has found an interesting take on suspension. They came up with suspension seat posts and stems that have a little bit of give on both ends of the bike. Stephen Anhert explains how these work and also how their kickstarter campaign is going on some of the products. It has wide applications across many cycling disciplines. Jason Prescott from Oakley has two new offerings in the brands iconic eyewear line. The have the Flight and Field jacket featuring new technology called the advancer that helps get rid of fog. They adjust on the fly and are a game changer in the industry. VeloToze has made some great shoe coverings and are one of the industry leaders in latex. Perfect for bad weather, cold, time trialing, keeping your shoes clean and looking good. They showed off Peter Sagan’s world champ striped one’s at the show. They also have a new line of socks entering the market. Joe Fhang one of the co owners talks us through it. Chris Sugai President of Niner bikes talks about a new concept bike they brought to the show. It’s a dual suspension go anywhere gravel bike that looks like it would be great for the zombie apocalypse. It also needs to be said he gave out one of the coolest pieces of swag. A niner branded Spyderco Knife! Vince Colvin from Chumba USA is one of the smaller frame builders at the show. They were there in partnership with Kogel Bearings and State wheels to showcase one of their beautiful handmade steel gravel bikes. Made from Austin Texas, they are true American brand. Jose Mendez of Wahoo Fitness talks to us about how realistic indoor and stationary cycling can be. He lets us test ride a route that simulates going up and downhill on a trainer that changes levels as you ride. One step closer to a true holodeck! Tim Jackson an industry legend is with Irwin wheels to talk about some of the interesting and not too sky high costs of Irwin wheels. They are built tough and have wheel choices for just about every discipline of cycling. Lastly we were hosted by the crew at Skratch labs. They work hard and are dedicated to putting smiles on people’s faces. They featured their bar which is a great alternative to those who are sick of the sweet only options. On the latest episode of the SCC podcast we take a close look at three that seem to have a big cycling following. We start with craft coffee, hydration and lastly beer. We talk about the attraction, appeal and dispel a bit of myth.  When cyclists first get ready to race or head out on the big weekend ride, coffee seems to be the go to beverage of choice. With dozens of choices and as many coffee shops around, it can be an overwhelming task. Ryan and Billy, cyclists who started a craft coffee company with delivery and subscription service in mind. We sample nitro coffee as well as aero press and talk about some of the physiological and psychological advantages to getting that morning cup of joe. This isn’t your fathers Sanka anymore. Coffee and cycling have a long lasting relationship.  Usually after or during a ride, cyclists usually have some kind of sports hydration, recovery drink or juice. The people at Mode nutrition talk about some of the benefits of drinking juice that comes from natural and pure ingredients. Aasha Marler and Tammo Walter talk about how they got their start in a highly competitive market and how their products work. We also talk about the cyclists ability to sometimes have to adapt to their surroundings and what to do on race day when they don’t necessarily have all their nutritional tools at their disposal. Lastly we get into some of their guilty food pleasures just to show that everything is ok in moderation including bacon and donuts.  Lastly, many cyclists like to reminisce about an epic ride with an ice cold beer. Rawley Macias of Rouleur brewery is an engineer, cyclists beer lover and brewer. He’s found a way to build a cycling themed brewery and combine all those passions into one. Rouleur has made it to the one year mark and has succeeded where other breweries have failed through being embraced by the cycling community, have an aggressive marketing model and of course brewing some unique and top notch beers. We sit down on location and talk about where he has been and how his brewery has served as the unofficial gathering for cyclists not only loving beer but meeting up for group rides and fun events. The future is expansion and we’ll see how Rouleur can take things to the next level.  Unfortunately water seems to be less and less prominent as these beverage choices are coming into the spotlight. Water used to be the go to that every nutritionist was screaming we needed 8 glasses of but with so many other options, we’ll have to see what happens.
