Good people, In today's episode, I'm joined by the CEO and founder of The Practicing Mind Institute, author, podcaster, and mindset maven, Thomas Sterner. As a teenager, Thomas was very creative. Yet, he lacked discipline, so once the initial enthusiasm for starting something new dissipated, he would look for something else, leaving that initial project unfinished. It took him some time, but he realized he was reacting to behaviors installed in his subconscious mind.Thomas' truth was to realize he was the producer of his thoughts, not his thoughts. This revelation, rarely seen in teenagers, helped Thomas become an observer of his thoughts and gave him an advantage in his personal and professional life. In his "previous life," Steven had a successful career as a contemporary dancer at New York City Opera, Metropolitan Opera, and Broadway in Disney's The Lion King. To deal with the anxiety caused by performing at that level, plus a rooted sense of not enoughness, Steven relied on drugs and alcohol and became an addict. After over 20 years of sobriety, Steven sees his addiction as a blessing in disguise, an opportunity to have another life. Steven's truth is to realize he is enough, that he has always been, and once he fully embraced that idea, he experienced a massive breakthrough and a profound transformation.  Our conversation revolves around Steven's first meeting with his truth, his recovery from addiction, and the decision to explore, learn and experience Traditional Eastern medicine and become a practitioner. Good People, On today’s 2019 throwback episode, I want to talk to you about the concept of My Truth versus The Truth because sometimes we hear people say, “My truth is this, or that”, but the fact is that our truth is not always the actual truth. Instead, it could be a lie or something that we tell ourselves to avoid what is actually true. I’ve seen this happening with everyone around me, including myself, and it’s not until we delve into the actual truth, that we can start to see what’s real. The Lie convinced the Truth to take a bath, naked, in a well, for the sole purpose of stealing her clothes. People everywhere turned their gaze away, looking at the poor Truth with contempt and rage. She felt ashamed walking naked and returned to the well, never to be seen again. Since then, the Lie travels around the world, dressed as the Truth, satisfying the needs of the society.[03:19] The truth is something universal, that no matter who you are, or where you are in the world, is going to be true. There are things about ourselves that are 100% true, that maybe we’re not aware of or we’re ignoring. For example, one unequivocal truth for me is that I was sabotaging my success, whether it would be in relationships, in business, or in my medical career. Whenever I took five steps forward, immediately managed to take five or even six steps back.[04:46] I noticed this truth about me when I started journaling because it helped me see a pattern in my behavior and things that were happening over and over again. I recognized that this was an actual fact, and I accepted it, regardless of how I felt about it, and only then, I was able to change for the better.[07:04] One other thing that is helpful in accepting the truth and not ignoring it by creating your personal truth, is meditation. This requires practice, patience and time – it may take years before you can get to a state where you can understand things from a deeper place, but the rewards can be fulfilling. Therapy and really good friends could also help you find the truth since these are all people who really care about you and have no fight in the game, other than to help you be better.[08:15] Try to focus as much as you can on the actual truth of things because you can make great progress in your endeavors and the path will become clearer. In that moment, he had to figure out what was truly going in with the conversation and how to best handle it (he typically has a very direct approach) without jeopardizing his grade. Ian chose to tread lightly - he thanked the professor for sharing and explained that he dressed that way because he wanted to put his best foot forward. It was then that he realized the truth, he is not someone who can operate well in a hierarchy. That instance taught him, very early on, that being in the hierarchy of medicine, in a traditional sense, wasn’t his path - especially in situations where he’d have to hold his tongue for the sake of being politically correct.[12:19]Hard Work and Motivation: Dr. Ian explains that he’s a very motivated person. He likes to work, likes the feeling of working and likes what it brings him; he feels better when he works for it. I asked him about his Instagram post “I may not be as good as you but I will outwork you,” and he said it’s how he’s won the game. He will work and work, this is something he tries to impart to his followers, particularly those seeking weight loss transformations; you have to work hard for what you want in life. Dr. Ian says putting in that effort and yielding your result tastes so much sweeter and feels so much better.[23:06]Leave Something in the Tank: We talked about his writing process; he says his writing is zone like and he’s constantly in the flow. He offered a key piece of advice: he makes sure that when he’s done writing, he doesn’t stop when he runs out of ideas, he stops where he still has more to tell. This is done so that he has somewhere to pick up the next day. Dr. Ian doesn’t run his tank down to E, he leaves with about a ¼ remaining and that has stopped him from getting writers block, helping him to continue to create. His advice to young writers is to spend time just writing and then go back to make your edits. During a particular rotation, he was called into the office of one of the professors on service - a meeting he thought was going to result in a mentorship or him receiving kudos on his work. Turns out, he was told that he was carrying himself and dressing in a manner that was above his station. This was a tricky moment for Ian. He had been dressing well to present himself in the most professional light. She was in her late 20s, married with children, working and had a home - having, what some would call the “perfect on paper life.” She began to notice that she was very unhappy and it wasn’t anything that she could pinpoint, just a feeling that something was missing. That feeling sent her on a journey of seeking. While trying to find that missing thing, she realized that she was disconnected from the truth of herself. She found that she was missing the connection from the truth of herself, her soul and spiritShe discovered the truth of her spiritual being is that she’s here to live a spiritual life, to thrive and fulfill her potential. [7:01]Professional Truth - Once Ellen discovered Kriya Yoga, a path of yoga for self and God realization, she was led into a service role. Ellen became an instrument to create space that allows others to find their teaching and truth. That became her path of transformation and eradicated any that ideas she had about her own lack; self doubt had to go in order for that work to thrive. Ellen said “life itself is always moving in the direction of thriving, prospering and fulfilling its purpose. There’s a vast creative energy of life and when we sign up to that, we have to be willing to thrive and grow.” Surrender and Willingness became her professional truth.[10:05]Ellen gives us a brief overview of Kriya Yoga. She breaks it down with the definition of yoga meaning, “union or oneness, to bind back.” She says yoga is bringing your attention and awareness to awake to everything that you are. Kriya is defined as generic term meaning “action.” Combined, Kriya Yoga means those actions that are supportive of and conducive to the higher states of consciousness.[17:55]Illusion of Separateness - Ellen describes this as a painful process. When life feels as if it’s a burden, when we feel suffering and are in a constant state of worry - those feeling become indicators that we’re in that space, an ego state of mind. The ego mind occurs when there’s an individual identify created that sees itself as being separate from the source. That is in opposition to understanding yourself as an expression of the larger truth of that life’s connected to everyone and everything. Ellen says a remedy for the ego state is gaining an intellectual understanding of the one reality, having an intuitive understanding of it and then a direct experience.[22:21]The Jewel of Abundance - Ellen’s book is a culmination of her years of practice. She calls it a deep dive into the philosophy and practices of yoga philosophy and meditation. Ellen says the primary takeaway is for us to wake up to the truth of what we are and the book provides a very practical manual for how to do that. It’s a map on how to change our mind from lack to abundance. Good People, In 2018 I had the pleasure of talking to Chris Bello. Chris was born in New York, now lives in Houston, and went the traditional path. Like many people on my show, he left the traditional path to be an entrepreneur. He’s a real estate investor, a host of his own podcast called Entrepreneur Motivation. Our conversation was a good one with a lot of synergy between us. For his Personal Truth, he talked about how he realized he didn’t have to live inside a box. When we’re born and we go through our day with everybody telling us what to do, where to go, and who to be, it puts you in a box. He realized that he didn’t need to live that way, and he can be successful in other ways. It’s all about serving what’s inside of you. If you’ve got something side of you that’s burning, telling you to go elsewhere, then you’ve got to go for it. Don’t be afraid to step outside of the box. In your daily interactions, give yourself a gift based on what you want from someone else. The truth is, we’ve got to start with ourselves first. We can’t always rely on others to fulfill our needs and desires, but we can rely on ourselves. Ask yourself, “How do I interface with myself?” Are you patient and compassionate?
