This week is more about what happens off the pitch and in the boardroom around the county with both conventions of Leitrim GAA and Leitrim Ladies GFA taking place on Sunday afternoon.  An afternoon pouring over financial figures from both meetings and discussing the activities of the last twelve months proved to be a very positive experience with some phenomenal achievements recorded in football, hurling and ladies football over the season.  We speak to newly elected Chairman Enda Stenson about the positive environment on and off the pitch which he inherits from outgoing Chairman Terence Boyle and Declan Bohan, the returning County Secretary who steps back into the role he vacated a decade ago.  On the ladies side of the house Aidan Heron talks about his re-election as chairperson of the organisation. Their successful season on the pitch despite having only returned to adult football and the success of their fundraising efforts which have given them a nice platform to build from in 2020.  We also have a look at the on field results where Sligo Rugby secured another All Ireland League victory against Ballina, Carrick Rugby kept in touch with the table toppers with a 5 point victory against Ballyhaunis.  Manorhamilton Rangers were the big winners of the weekend with a ten goal haul in a 10-2 win over Glenview Stars, Robbie Cunningham with four of those goals. Carrick may have hit the net three times against Ballygawley Celtic but their clean sheet run was broken by conceding four times to lose by a single goal in their league game.

This week is a little different on the show, with a relatively quiet weekend on the sporting action we’re taking a little look at the upcoming elections for the Chairman’s position of Leitrim GAA speaking to both candidates for the role.  With a number of clubs holding their own AGM’s ahead of the county convention on the 15th December, we’ve put both potential chairmen in the spotlight to discuss their experience, their ambitions and what they would see as success, should they be elected to the head of the organisation in just three weeks.  Enda Stenson (Eslin) joins Breifne to discuss decades of service to the association in the county as a player, administrator, referee and through his political life as the chairperson of the Leitrim Sports Partnership. Enda also deals with the question of whether there might be a conflict between winning this role and his two decades as an elected member of Leitrim County Council.  Enda expresses his delight that there is an election for the position and that discussion will take place about the merits of both candidates. He also lets us know about his disappointment that it is the only role which will be contested at the convention.  Stephen Flynn (Mohill) is also an administrator with four decades of experience in the game having been elected to the position of club secretary at just fifteen years of age and having served as secretary of both the County Board and Bord na nOg in the past.   He details his ambitions for where Leitrim GAA can push on after a double promotion season with both the Footballers and Hurlers moving up a grade. Stephen discusses the potential conflict of interest with his son Domhnall an active member of the senior football squad.  Finally on the show, newly appointed U17 county football manager Brendan Guckian drops in to discuss his return to the inter county sideline, two years after leaving the senior squad. With a hugely experienced support team with him, the future is looking very bright for the future generation of Leitrim footballers.

Two former chairmen of Leitrim County Council, Cllr Sean McGowan and Cllr Enda Stenson, joined Breifne to talk about the main issues of the day. Taking a look through this week's local papers and some of the motions discussed during Monday's regular County Council meeting.  Gerry Reynold's departure from politics was the first item on the agenda before attention turned to the recent new arrivals in Carrick on Shannon and a discussion about the lack of communication surrounding the establishment of the residential centre in Hartley, on the outskirts of the county town.  Minister Micheal Ring's trip to Leitrim last Friday to launch the new extension of the Shannon Blueway to the Lough Allen Hotel, Jinny's Tearooms at Acres and announcing the start of SMART Green Mohill, a rural revival and renewal scheme which will boost the fortunes of the town.  The impact of the new EU Mercosur trade deal on County Leitrim and the devastating effect it poses for the small farmers relying on the sale of beef for their livelihood. Both men talk about their hopes that a land reclamation grant scheme would allow some hope for local farmers.  The conversation ended with a tongue in cheek discussion around whether Leitrim could now be considered a hurling stronghold after the county Under 17 team secured the Tom Hogan Cup, the third major hurling title this year for Leitrim teams.
