This week for our Sports Preview show Brendan Guckian and Seamus Gallagher join Breifne Earley to run the rule over what might lie in store for all twenty clubs taking part in the Leitrim Club Football Championships.  Current U17 Leitrim Manager Brendan Guckian runs the rule over the teams taking part in the Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Football Championship, a competition the former inter county midfielder won on three occasions (1995, 2003 &amp; 2007) with his own club St. Mary's.   Former County Board Secretary, Seamus Gallagher, himself a Championship winner with Drumkeerin in the second tier in 1975 talks us through what lies ahead for the secondary grade of the game in the county.  In the Senior grade Group 1, his own club, St. Mary's, facing into a particularly tough group against three of the fancied sides in last season's beaten finalists Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins and Mohill and Aughawillan who have won the competition two and three times respectively in the last six years.  Those four will be joined by Fenagh St. Caillins, managed by Joseph Flynn, who oversaw St. Mary's last season with both those sides clashing in the first round of games on Saturday week.   Aughawillan will get the opportunity to watch their upcoming opponents with a weekend off while Mohill and Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins will clash in what promises to be the tie of the opening round.  Group 2 sees Glencar/Manor favourites to top the group as winners although Allen Gaels will be looking to regroup after a disappointing season in 2019, Leitrim Gaels will be relishing their first ever crack at this level in their 24th Championship season, they host Melvin Gaels in their opener next week, while the Kinlough men seeking overall redemption for their Semi Final defeat last season.   Drumreilly have developed a knack of not knowing when they are beaten and it would take a brave their evergreen squad will be looking to secure their quarter final spot and their guaranteed survival at the top table.   A lot will be decided based on how teams finish in their groups and who they face in the quarter final draw as to who might be the top dogs when the Championship runs it's course at the end of September.  In the Smith Monumentals Intermediate Championship Group 1 sees Eslin, Ballinaglera, Bornacoola, Drumkeerin and Aughnasheelin face off over the five rounds of games to attempt to qualify for the championship quarter finals while Group 2 will require Kiltubrid, Gortletteragh, St Patrick's Dromahair and Carrigallen to battle it out with last year's semi finalists Annaduff to provide their opposition at that stage.  With Gortletteragh and Dromahair having dropped down to the Intermediate grade and always competitive Eslin led by the Beirne brothers promoted to the trio of Ballinaglera, Drumkeerin and Annaduff they will be the favourites to challenge for the most competitive championship in the county this year.   Aughnasheelin's challenge will depend as usual on the numbers they might available for this years campaign while Carrigallen, Bornacoola and Kiltubrid will fancy causing an upset against the fancied sides. It's amazing to think those three teams combined featured five times in no less than four Senior Championship finals from 2005 to 2009.   Both Seamus and Brendan discuss the effect of home advantage, a new addition to the championship for this season, and whether full crowds will return as expected to the sidelines for these early season games.

This weekend sees the return of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division and we'll be chatting to Sligo Rover's Niall Morahan ahead of their start with Finn Harps, we're also chatting to Leitrim U17 Football Manager Bredan Guckian and Trish Forde of the Leitrim Sports Partnership.  This episode is available in association with Local Enterprise Office, Leitrim.  Niall chats about his breakthrough season last year including his international debut and being selected into the U19 European Championships Squad and playing 25 first team games last season with the Bit O'Red.   He chats about how preseason has gone for Rovers including new arrivals, departures from the squad and how injuries are affecting their preparations.  Brendan Guckian joins us to remind us about how the U17 county team are shaping up ahead of their season opener on Wednesday evening in Athlone IT against Limerick in the Leinster U17 League. They face Longford and Louth over the Easter break.  Trish Forde of the Leitrim Sports Partnership drops in to discuss all that's going on with them at the moment from pre-school programmes, youngsters and even for active age and special needs groups around the county.  Breifne takes a look at Sligo Rugby's All Ireland League clash away to Blackrock College while their junior side travel to Castlebar. Carrick on Shannon Rugby host Cregg's on Sunday afternoon.  Leitrim Hurler's National League game has been switched to Belturbet on Sunday afternoon at 2pm while the U20 Footballers face Galway in Avantcard Pairc Sean MacDiarmada   Breifne also features the fixtures in the U13 &amp; U17 club leagues which start this evening and continue over the entire weekend with the U13 league now combined with Longford for a better grading level within the competition. Niall Morahan, Brendan Guckian & Leitrim Sports Partnership - Sports Preview: Episode 181

This week is a little different on the show, with a relatively quiet weekend on the sporting action we’re taking a little look at the upcoming elections for the Chairman’s position of Leitrim GAA speaking to both candidates for the role.  With a number of clubs holding their own AGM’s ahead of the county convention on the 15th December, we’ve put both potential chairmen in the spotlight to discuss their experience, their ambitions and what they would see as success, should they be elected to the head of the organisation in just three weeks.  Enda Stenson (Eslin) joins Breifne to discuss decades of service to the association in the county as a player, administrator, referee and through his political life as the chairperson of the Leitrim Sports Partnership. Enda also deals with the question of whether there might be a conflict between winning this role and his two decades as an elected member of Leitrim County Council.  Enda expresses his delight that there is an election for the position and that discussion will take place about the merits of both candidates. He also lets us know about his disappointment that it is the only role which will be contested at the convention.  Stephen Flynn (Mohill) is also an administrator with four decades of experience in the game having been elected to the position of club secretary at just fifteen years of age and having served as secretary of both the County Board and Bord na nOg in the past.   He details his ambitions for where Leitrim GAA can push on after a double promotion season with both the Footballers and Hurlers moving up a grade. Stephen discusses the potential conflict of interest with his son Domhnall an active member of the senior football squad.  Finally on the show, newly appointed U17 county football manager Brendan Guckian drops in to discuss his return to the inter county sideline, two years after leaving the senior squad. With a hugely experienced support team with him, the future is looking very bright for the future generation of Leitrim footballers.
