He’s represented his country at 3 Olympic Games and 4 Commonwealth Games, including earning a silver medal at Delhi 2010 and gold at Glasgow 2014. Richie has over 17 years’ experience as a competitive weightlifter. In this time he has broken over 50 New Zealand Olympic records and still holds 8 New Zealand senior records over 3 weight divisions. Richie has a degree in coaching and currently works with over 30 athletes, including a number of aspiring youth lifters. German Weightlifting

Richard John Edward "Richie" Patterson is a weightlifting competitor for New Zealand.At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi he won the silver medal in the men's 85 kg weightlifting event. He was New Zealand's flagbearer in the 2014 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony. Richie starts with telling us about how he got into weightlifting, his background, and what his training regimen looks like. He then goes on to talk about the German weightlifting system, as well as the differences between Bulgarian and German training methods. We then go to talk about Richie’s first international competition. He goes on to talk about how he responded to failure. He goes on to talk about some mental preparation before lifts, as well as on his experience in playing in regionals. He also talks about weightlifting in a global sense, as well as the risk and rewards that come with the use of performance enhancing drugs. Another choice episode with a renowned weightlifter.
