In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we traverse to the heartland of America for a banner show from the wild Summer of 1982 at Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI. Featuring a hammy Bob, some heavy playing from Brent, and a lyrical albeit haggard Jerry, it’s one of the best pictures we have of what made the 80’s such a compelling and confounding time for The Dead. Disc One begins with a jamband staple, the sandwich jam, wherein “The Music Never Stopped” segues in and out of “Sugaree.” Elsewhere Jerry shines again on “Big River,” Brent beams through his Hammond on “CC Rider,” and the whole band connects on “Let It Grow.” While there are arguments to be made that aspects of other shows in the larger Summer ‘82 tour should have been included instead, getting a full First Set from The Dead showcases the highs and lows of the eras. On Disc Two we hear a very typical 80s/90s set two in the sense that “Playing In The Band” bookends a segment of “Drums/Space” and a gorgeous version of “The Wheel” emerges from the interstellar jamming. Showcasing their brilliance as a backing band, we hear them dip into the Blues for perhaps the last time in the 70s. Highlighted by a stunning “Jam” between Diddley and The Dead we see an alternate path for the band + their ability to linger in a variety of American styles throughout their career. Steve and Rob are not necessarily PhD scholars on Grateful Dead concert or song history (perhaps halfway through a Master&#39;s program) but I very much enjoy the analysis they bring to these concerts and songs.  They have opened my eyes/mind to a number of their insights I have not considered before. Lascivious praise of this band can be tiresome and these guys offer a critical look, which I greatly appreciate.  And their chemistry and roles in the discussions is developing nicely.

A fascinating volume which sees The Grateful Dead just four months on from their phenomenal run at Fillmore East, documented in Dick’s Picks Vol. 4. Here we see them feature their newest songs, set to be recorded for Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, in their acoustic set, while allowing their electric set as a review of their career through the 1960s. In the acoustic set, songs like “Friend Of The Devil,” “Dire Wolf,” and “Black Peter” sound raised from the dirt. It’s a peek towards where The Dead will go in the early 70s, as many of their best songs will debut over the next three years. In the electric set, we hear the psych-rock freak-outs of the 60s on their last legs, as “Good Lovin’,” “Viola Lee Blues” and “Dancing In The Streets” showcase the best of The Dead we’re leaving behind. Focusing on the larger touch points between Phish &amp; The Dead, we dive into Phish’s 1998 Island Tour, highlighting the April 3, 1998 performance from Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. A high point for Phish, they’d just reinvented themselves stylistically throughout 1997, and then booked a surprise run of shows just a few weeks prior to dive back into the Eno-inspired atmospheric funk jams they couldn’t get enough of. A true turning point in the band’s larger history, The Island Tour marks the point where the party begins to consume the band, and the darkness that’s lingering will soon consume them. A celebration &amp; an ominous sign of what’s to come, it’s a fascinating moment in their history. Opening with stellar jams in “Mike’s Song” and “Weekapaug Groove,” the band later focuses on intra-band communication in “Reba.” The second, however, is the highlight of the overall show. Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 5 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 5, from the Oakland Auditorium Arena in Oakland, CA on December 26, 1979. We find the Dead at yet another transitional period in their career, as they continue rolling out the Brent era. This show features a number of significant bustouts in “Uncle John’s Band” &amp; “Brokedown Palace” while being highlighted by a phenomenal second set. Featuring an uninterrupted run of jams in “Uncle John’s Band -&gt; Estimated Prophet -&gt; Jam -&gt; He’s Gone - &gt; The Other One -&gt; Drums -&gt; Space -&gt; Not Fade Away&gt; Brokedown Palace,” it showcased the new tones and sonic approach that came with Brent Myland joining earlier that year.Steven and Rob focus on the fascinating run of shows The Dead played in the last week of the 1970’s, their transition to perhaps the fascinating &amp; much-maligned 1980’s period, their Talking Heads jams of the era, The Dead’s appeal to pop music, and much more. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. Steven and Rob use the series as a jumping-off point to discuss the wildest and most unconventional American rock band, along with the venues, cultural zeitgeist, musical evolution, and larger themes of each release. In Episode 1 we explore Dick’s Pick’s Vol. 1. Recorded at the Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, FL, on December 19, 1973. Here we find the band on a high, closing out one of their strongest years ever, and featuring a fully-flowing second set marked by the uninterrupted segment of: “He’s Gone -&gt; Truckin’ -&gt; Nobody’s Fault But Mine -&gt; Jam -&gt; The Other One -&gt; Jam -&gt; Stella Blue.” Steven and Rob focus on the origins of the live release series before diving into the show itself, properly highlighting the transcendent Set 2.
