Ses. 3-5: Quality Tools and Topics

This session covers how Lean can be implemented in healthcare settings. Susan Sheehy of Lean Healthcare West describes the process and presents sample cases where clinics mapped out their problems and identified solutions as a team.

Ses. 3-3 Lean for Healthcare: An Overview

This session presents examples of A3 planning and uses an accounts payable case study from Rockwell Collins for a in-class planning exercise.

Ses. 3-4: A3 Thinking

This session covers Lean thinking beyond the local level and evaluates how to address issues that are outside the control of the clinic at the enterprise level. Rapid Process Improvement Workshops are introduced as a means of achieving larger-scale change.

Ses. 2-4: Improving the Enterprise, Healthcare Option

This session covers continuous process improvement as it pertains to  healthcare. Students work in teams to apply value stream mapping and Lean tools to improve flow in their clinics. Teams then perform root cause analysis and devise improvement plans.

Ses. 2-2: Continuous Process Improvement, Healthcare Option

This session covers a simulation that demonstrates the impact of variability on process performance. The class evaluates data from a dice simulation and computer simulation to show how variability reduces expected product performance.

Ses. 3-2: Variability Simulation

This video covers aspects of the Lean healthcare clinic simulation sessions. It describes  the student experience and covers some of the lessons they learned. For educators, this segment also covers aspects of the learning simulation.

Ses. 2-1: Lean healthcare simulation (covers 2-1, 2-3, and 2-5)

This session covers the basics of sketching a value stream map and conducting value stream analysis. Using the example of hot dog stand, the class evaluates steps for process improvement employing this approach.

Ses. 1-6: Value Stream Mapping Basics

This session covers the challenges of the human element of Lean and considers ways to keep workers productive and happy. It includes an in class debate with teams discussing the  competitive advantage of early Lean adopters vs. second followers.
