Kainoa Keanaaina

Kainoa Keanaaina was born and raised on the island of Oʻahu. Most of his education in grade school was taught in the Hawaiian language. This time of immersed Hawaiian language education is known as Kaiapuni. Keanaina shares his many moʻolelo on what he had experienced and learned in Kula Kaiapuni ʻo Waiau, Hālau Kū Mana, and Kula Kaiapuni ʻo Ānuenue. Mailani Maka

Mailani Makaʻīnaʻi was born and raised in Kailua and Kahaluʻu. A graduate of Maryknoll Schools. She began learning lomilomi in her ohana since the age of 7.  Her first lomilomi kumu outside of her ohana was Ronnie Dudoit of Molokai.  Mailani attended Uncle Ronnie and Aunty Francineʻs teaching in 1996 and 1997.  In 1999 she got to attend and study with Aunty Margaret Machadoʻs school of Lomilomi.  In 1999 and 2001 she worked at the Lomilomi shop with Uncle Moe Keale and Kumu Kaʻuhane Lee.  She got her massage therapy licensed in 2000.  From 2001 to 2012, Mailani worked as a Lomilomi specialist in Waikikiʻs Hotels Spa industry. She opened her own brick and mortar shop in 2016.  Mailani currently shares her passion of Hawaiian Healing and Hawaiian Culture with the Lomilomi Collective. This is the same Mailani Makaʻīnaʻi, the mother, lover, musician, entrepreneur, composer, vocalist and multiple time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner.

Meghan Leialoha Au

Born and raised on the Windward side of Oʻahu, Meghan graduated from the University of San Francisco with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science. Her health practitioner training continued with lomilomi work since 2007 studying under Kumu Lomilomi, Enrick Ortiz, Jr., as his apprentice in January 2013, and as assistant in teaching his classes since May 2014. In 2008 she went through Haku Hoʻoponopono training with Aunty Malia Craver and Lehua Pouha at QLCC in Kalihi, and trained in Lāʻau Lapaʻau with Kahuna Lāʻau Lapaʻau Levon Ohai starting in 2009. Her graduation from Hawaiʻinuiākea, Center for Hawaiian Studies at UH Mānoa, with her MA in December 2015 in ʻIke Hawaiʻi with a thesis on historical trauma and itʻs health repercussions, bodily, spiritually, governmentally for Kānaka Hawaiʻi also informs her birthwork supporting her community’s growing families with training from New Beginnings Doula Training, and ʻEhuola – Ka Lāhui o Ka Pō's practitioner training through Kōkua Kalihi Valley’s Hoʻoulu ʻĀina program. She studied under Reiki Master Britt Yap since 2018 and from May 2019 to March 2020 she served as Director of Education and Community Outreach at the Waimānalo Market Co-op in their non-profit sector, supporting the Ola Hou program that improved food security and practices with two populations: students at Mālama Honua Public Charter School; and women who were either pregnant and/or breastfeeding. Kū I Ke Aloha serves as her practitioner and education platform for community healing to address personal and historical atrocities and hardships that can be revalued and transformed into opportunities to learn and grow and be a part reclaiming who we truly are - individually and communally on a path towards truth, justice, peace, growth and healing.

Dennis Kauahi

Dennis was born and raised on the west end of Kauai in the rural plantation town of Kekaha.  This provided him with a rich multicultural environment of living and learning respect and appreciation for his own cultural background as well as for other ethnic groups with in his community. His foundational spiritual teachings in both christian and traditional Hawaiian culture, language and 'ohana were provided by his parents, Herbert Ha'o Kauahi and Christobel Ka'anohiokalani Holt Kauahi. He graduated from Waimea High School in 1963 and furthered his education at Willamette University, attaining a Bachelors degree in Sociology in 1967.  He attended the University of Hawaii School of Social Work and graduated with a Master's in Social Work degree in 1970.  Since then until his retirement in 2012, Dennis has work with the Queen Lilioukalani Children's Center providing culturally based Social Work based healing practices to a wide range of communities He has received mentor-ship on Hawaiian healing cultural knowledge and practices from four recognized and renowned Hawaiian cultural experts: Mary Kawena Pukui, Nahale-Elua Mahuiki, Aunty Malia Craver and Uncle Danny Hanakahi. Dennis' interest and commitment continues to be, particularly with our males, helping all males with our community to bring their gifts and talents to the leadership of family, community and state through the strengthening of themselves and ohana. Francine, also known as “Aunty Fran” to her patients and co-workers, began her career with Waikiki Health in 1998. She comes from a lineage of Native Hawaiian healers who taught her skills that are valued both in the Native Hawaiian and general community. Her areas of specialty are Native Hawaiian Healing, Hawaiian Cultural Education, Advocacy for Kupuna, Chronic Pain Management, and Individual and Family Counseling. Healing modalities include Ho’oponopono, Lomilomi and La’au Lapa’au. Aunty Fran has more than 35 years of experience as a Registered Nurse and Native Hawaiian Practitioner. She has a Bachelor of Nursing Degree from the University of Hawaii and practiced as a Registered Nurse at St. Francis Hospital, where she introduced the first hospice care in Hawaii in a hospital. Other accomplishments include serving as CEO of Malama Ka Ohana a Pau Loa; developing programs to promote and preserve the Hawaiian healing traditions and lifestyle through providing opportunities for education, research and apprenticeship; and initiating pilot programs to integrate Hawaiian Healing with Western Medicine. Makana Risser Chai researched and authored, the Bishop Museum book "Na Moʻolelo Lomilomi: Traditions of Hawaiian Massage and Healing." The book compiles every article and oral history she could find in the archives and old journals from 1794 to the 1930s. She has continued her research by interviewing kupuna, attending workshops and receiving lomilomi as her primary medical care. She followed up that book with Hawaiian Massage: Lomilomi, sacred touch of Aloha. The Reverand Dr. Malcolm Nāea Chun received his formal education at 'Iolani School and the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. He attended St. John's Theological College in Aotearoa (New Zealand) as a Rotary International Fellow and the Vancouver School of Theology in British Columbia as an Inter-Pacific Fellow. He received his PhD from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in Aotearoa, the first international recipient. He is ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in Hawai'i, serving as associate priest at the Cathedral of St. Andrew's in Honolulu and vicar of St. John's By The Sea in Kahalu'u, O'ahu.  Dr. Chun has taught Hawaiian language and folklore in the University of Hawai'i system and has worked as a cultural specialist and culture and education officer for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and also as a cultural specialist of the Hawai'i State Department of Health, the Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center and the Curriculum Research &amp; Development Group at the College of Education, University of Hawaii at Mānoa in the Pihana Nā Mamo Native Hawaiian Education program. Dr. Chun's publications include translations of Hawaiian newspapers and other nineteenth century writings, including books on traditional medicinal practices, biographies of Hawaiian scholars, Hawaiian history, and also children's song and storybooks. He has contributed articles on Hawaiian culture, history and religion to many journals, including biographies of Maiki Aiu Lake and Davida Malo for the Oxford University Press Online Service's American National Biography series and an edited and updated an article on Hawaiian religion for Macmillan's Encyclopaedia on Religion, Second Edition. He received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant for the translation of the 1860s records of the 'Ahahui Lā'au Lapa'au of Wailuku.   He is also the translator and editor of the History of Kanalu by Benjamin K. Nāmakaokekahi and David Malo's Ka Mo'olelo Hawai'i . Before passing Kumu Alva J. Andrews placed the kuleana of his Pā, Pā Ola Hawaiʻi, in the hands of Pōmaikaʻi Freed.  He also organized the structure of his Pā with people in positions around her to assist her in carrying on his lineage and fulfilling his vision.  ​Pōmaikaʻi Freed, of Kalihi, began studying under Uncle Alva while still a student at Hālau Kū Mana Public Charter School. During her senior year, Uncle Alva came to Hālau Kū Mana to talk to the students of a lomilomi elective class. She sat there in awe as he shared his jokes and wisdom.  With the few remaining minutes of class, he adjusted one of the teachers -- and that was it; she was hooked. This single meeting changed the course of her life.  For the better part of the next 7 years was spent living with, learning from, and being molded by her Kumu, friend and mentor.  From a very young age her family, hula hālau, and school instilled within her a deep Hawaiian cultural foundation.  This foundation brought to life many of the things that Uncle Alva envisioned for the future of his Pā. Possessing the fire of youth with the wisdom of her kūpuna, Pōmaikaʻi is a continual inspiration and help for so many of all generations.

Calvin Hoe is a Native Hawaiian musician and teacher. He began making Hawaiian instruments in 1961 as a teenage boy in Hakipu'u, helping bring Hawaiian instruments back from obscurity into popular consciousness. He has made more than 80,000 bamboo nose flutes and has travelled around the world playing music. His family runs the Waiahole Poi Factory and Hakipu'u Learning Center where they teach the next generation.
