Growing up in California to a Mexican father and English mother, Desiree says her upbringing was based on three things: faith, family, and football. An avid 49ers fan, she and her brother Roman made a pact early on that they’d team up: he’d be an NFL player, and his lawyer sister would be his agent. The plan moved forward: Desiree completed law school and was consistently pulled to jobs within professional and collegiate sports.  Roman held up his end of the deal too: He was recruited to play football in college, but in his first game a horrible accident cut his career short and transformed his and his family’s life. Keri’s athletics story began when she was a softball player at Saginaw Valley State University. “Softball chose [her],” she says, and it became a huge part of her life’s story. In fact, she coached for 15 years at her alma mater’s conference rival, Ferris State University. Another huge part of Keri’s story is her service to our country: She grew up in a military family, and as a sophomore in college, she signed up for the Army reserves. In 2003, she reported for active duty and served in Iraq for a year—and we are so grateful for her service. After earning her JD and starting her athletics career in compliance at San Jose State, she went on to other schools where she added “legal” and professor to her titles, before pivoting from campus work to a conference office. She also moved from a basketball conference to a large and successful Power 5 football university, just 1 of the many non-traditional and hard-to-make transitions she has navigated so successfully in her career. On the most recent episode of the Women Leaders Podcast, Patti Phillips is joined by Women Leaders past president and the Mountain West Conference Senior Associate Commissioner Carolayne Henry.  Carolayne was one of those people that knew from a young age what she wanted to do, and from the time she was just 12 years old, she knew she wanted to go to law school. But after earning her law degree from Pitt, and having the opportunity practice law, she realized she wanted to get back into sports. After a few years at the NCAA, Carolayne found her sweet spot in compliance at the Mountain West Conference where she was one of the first hires who helped start the conference, and has spent over 20 years building and elevating the conference to the powerhouse it is today.  In my conversation with Carolayne, you will learn what it takes to actually start a conference, how to stay in one place and continue to grow, and the value of being open-minded and inclusive.
