How companies support their female employees that are going through perimenopause and menopause is starting to hit the headlines. Think about it. Most women go through the menopause transition between the ages of 45 and 60. This is when women are in their professional prime. It’s nearly impossible to be your best at work when you are dealing with hot flashes, fatigue and brain fog. This is especially true when there’s no support for what you are going through. There are changes on the horizon, but we’ll usher in these changes much more quickly if we can become active participants in the solution. Hot Topic: Menopause and Your Workplace with Tamsen Fadal

Did you know the clothes you wear impact how you perform as a leader? And they impact how others interact with you. I remember from my Catholic School days being told that uniforms were worn for a couple different reasons. One, they helped to level-set students from different socio-economic levels. And second, students who wore uniforms behaved better and performed better in their classes. You’d think we would move past having our clothing impact our performance but it’s not the case. Your Clothing Exudes Your Leadership

There are companies that have had success creating gender equality in the workplace. This is demonstrated by representation of nearly 50% or more women throughout all levels of leadership in the organization, including the executive level.  Are you curious to know exactly what is making the difference in those companies?  For this episode I invited Dana Sente, who serves as Vice President, Training and Development for Veris Residential. In this role, Dana identifies and oversees training and employee development for all property positions. She also works closely with the Company’s COO on ways to educate employees about corporate values related to ethics and responsibility. Dana has developed education programs to support both hard and soft skills for Veris Residential employees. Training opportunities include yearly real estate classes, maintenance certification classes, LEED® certification and other ESG training. A Model for Giving Feedback to Your Team

 Do you ever find yourself struggling to give constructive feedback?  It takes some finesse and perhaps a little bit of courage to face the unknown reaction from the person you are giving feedback to.  Constructive feedback is so important because it helps team members improve and grow. When done correctly, feedback can build trust and strengthen relationships.  However, giving feedback can be tricky, and it's easy to fall into common pitfalls. How Communication, Transparency, and Humor Can Help You Through Grief

 Is everyone clear on what your expectations are? And are you clear on what others are expecting from you?  Are you sure?  In episode 472, Lynae Remondino and I covered the importance of asking clarifying questions to prevent misunderstandings. For a variety of reasons, it’s almost too easy for misunderstandings to occur.  On almost any given workday you can probably find an example in which you thought you were clear with someone that they were to do X, Y and Z and instead they did X, Y and M. Kara was fortunate and landed a good job with a large accounting firm while she was in her senior year of school. Everyone, including her school advisors, continually exclaimed how lucky she was to have that sort of opportunity. Because of those circumstances, Kara didn’t even consider negotiating during her interview. Years later, she discovered that her male friend that had started at the same time as her was making substantially more money per year. This hit Kara pretty hard, and she realized she was playing small in that interview. The Wake Up Call Kara had always this energy that stemmed from scheduling and planning, even as a kid. During the time spent at her first job, Kara was drained of that energy. She spent most of her time traveling for work and spent many nights sleeping on conference room floors. All of the continuous stress and exhaustion lead to a complete break down of her digestive system. Having digestive issues only escalated her stress. Kara had a pretty traumatic event occur in the middle of a plane, after rushing to catch her flight one day for work. The only help Kara was getting for her health issues was in the form of prescription medication, even after asking for alternatives. Kara left her doctor’s office in tears after a disappointing talk and had a sudden realization that if she was going to heal her gut, she had to take it into her own hands. Kara set her mind to helping herself and others heal themselves and her airplane story came out of hiding so she could encourage those around her to address their health head on. Style of Leadership Communication and creating a safe place for people to express themselves and their opinions is something that is incredibly important to Kara. Whether it's in the sessions, volunteering, on a board or on a team, its important to recognize the process leading up to when you’re interfacing with her, thinking about when - night time meetings - people are going to be hungry, they’ve been on the go since 8am. analyzing that and working with it. Recognizing, have a snack available, they may be flustered. Give them a couple minutes, coffee or tea. Make it comfortable so everyone can be productive in a little more relaxed way. What Are You Excited About? After 7 years of working with clients, Kara noticed that there was either absolute angst or excitement when discussing tasks lists. The struggle between obligatory stuff we need to do, and the stuff we deeply desire but don’t always have the time for, can be overwhelming. Kara’s observance sparked “The 33k Task List Project, where she hopes to collect 33 thousand hand written task lists. The lists will help Kara shift the conversation around obligation and desire and the consequences that occur when balance is not present. Current Business Challenge The 33k Task List Project will definitely be a challenge for Kara, given the volume and spreading the word. Behind the scenes, Kara struggles with referrals. Due to her line of work, and the taboo of digestive issues in our society, Kara often find that her clients refer to her as their “secret weapon,” which doesn’t exactly help her marketing. Lolly was a curious child and an avid reader who became enamored with her life, finding out who she was and what life was all about. While reading Viktor Frankl's  Man's Search for Meaning, Lolly really identified with the challenges and finding meaning behind them and rereads the book each year to keep the message fresh in her mind. Lolly knows that in her darkest moments she will find treasure, and knows it will always be an amazing learning experience. Each night before bed, Lolly asks herself a two-part question that allows her to revel in daily triumphs and set goals for the following day. Lolly knows now that life is in stages, and the decisions you make at a certain level must be the right choice for that point in your life. The Wake Up Call Lolly has a history with perfectionism and had to learn the difference between perfection and excellence. She thought she had to be perfect and on top of everything and ended up exhausting herself. Lolly started asking herself if she was trying to achieve perfection or excellence. Being perfect is not achievable, but Lolly knew she had to bring quality and excellence to what she does and let the ideal of perfection go. Style of Leadership Lolly leads from within and by example. She does everything with heart, compassion, empathy and without judgements or assumptions. Lolly truly tries to be present in the moment with each person or group that she is with, either virtually or in person. Lolly feels that if she can be present in the moment, it allows her to have a robust future of all the great little moments that add up. What Are You Excited About? Lolly's lifelong dream of being an author is coming true with her first book, The Leadership Gap: What Gets Between You and Your Greatness. Lolly is extremely excited and passionate about this book, as she has written about the methods she uses with clients so people can coach themselves, and have awareness about themselves, in a way that they normally wouldn’t. This book is different than other leadership or business books, as it's not about what you should do, but about who you should be. Biggest Leadership Challenge With Lolly's dream in full force, her perfectionist self has come back in full storm. Many years ago, Lolly made a promise to herself that she was going to live each day with a purpose of serving others. It's hard keeping that promise, being of service every day. So, Lolly's goal of reaching the New York Times Bestsellers List, would enable the book to become its own entity and allow her to help others she normally wouldn't be able to. Leadership Practice Lolly has a couple of practices that allow her to be a better leader. Being disciplined and coming up with rituals on a daily basis, gives her the freedom to be who she wants to be. Every night she asks that two-part question, and in the morning between 4:30 and 6:30, she reads an entire book. These practices make her a better leader because she is always learning, growing and changing. Advice For Younger Self Have more compassion. Lolly says her compassion came from not having compassion, and suffering about it, when she was younger. Lolly would also advise her younger self to not be as harsh on herself and learn that its ok if things arent working out the way she wants. Everything will be ok. Elizabeth Moss is dedicated to recognizing Maine’s role in American Art.  She opened her gallery in 2004 after completing a master of art's program in museum studies and curatorial research at George Washington University. While in Washington she worked at the Hirshhorn Museum &amp; Sculpture Garden and was a member of Zonta International and a founding member of the Smithsonian Young Benefactors.  In 2010, she founded the nonprofit arts organization the Maine Museum of Photographic Arts and was its Executive Director from 2010- 2014 and today heads the Advisory Board. In 2013, she was a finalist in Maine Family Business Awards for Elizabeth Moss Galleries and the gallery was named one of the top 500 Galleries in North America by Blouin International's website ArtInfo.  She is also an active member of the Women's Executive Forum. As director of Elizabeth Moss Galleries, she has exhibited at international art fairs in NYC's 28th Street Armory and Boston's AD20/21 at the Cyclorama.  Artworks from her gallery have been included in the Art in Embassies program and are in the corporate collections of LL Bean, Acadia Insurance and Maine General Hospital and countless private collections in the US, France, Saudi Arabia and Finland. Elizabeth knew that she would probably flourish in a lofty place away from the strip mall she was in, but stayed put. It may not have been glamorous, but she wouldn’t have survived if she had followed their advice. The Wake Up Call In 2010, a client inquired about a painting that had been in their family a long time. With Elizabeth’s love for art history, she took a look at the painting and saw the beauty shine through. Discovering that the painting had an incredible history, Elizabeth realized she has just as much to offer as everyone else outside of Maine. What Are You Excited About? Elizabeth wants to focus on branching outside of Maine, possibly nationwide. Current Business Challenge Elizabeth feels like there is a retraction in art market. With recent politics, there is a little uncertainty in where it’s all going and the unknown can impact a nonessential industry like art. Leadership Practice Elizabeth’s relationships with everyone she knows. Advice For Younger Self It’s okay if you’re not 100% every day. It’s ok to be 60-70% sometimes as the days you are 124% will even it out in the end. He believes women have thoughts such as: “I am going to do everything; I should be able to do everything because I am strong.” He acknowledges that women are strong, but with only 24 hours in a day, time can be a limiting factor. He sees a lot of people who have taken on the belief that ‘busy equals success’. According to Dave, busy is not success; results are success. What He Has Learned from Women  Dave has learned that—especially with women—it’s not just about making money, it’s about transforming the world. Angy Ford, who takes pride in transforming daycare, has taught him something very important: the finish line. Everyone starts their day out not knowing where it’s going to end. Just like in a race, the finish line defines where you are going to stop and allows you to better map out your day. The Necessary Changes  Dave has seen a lot of women feeling burnt out. He believes that you can do everything and that you are capable, but not all at once. It’s important to recognize your limits and make choices accordingly. When you continually say yes, you are chipping away at all of the yesses you said previously.  Dave shares that you can go into debt with time, but then you have to pay it back with interest. Julia’s father didn’t know how to raise kids, so he sent them to the orphanage and went back to Greece to find a new mother for them. The conditions inside the orphanage were horrific. Julia was a tenacious woman who overcame great odds to obtain her position in life.  She was loving, caring, hardworking, and compassionate. She also taught her children and grandchildren to be entrepreneurs that treat everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve.What He Sees That Hold Women BackThe impostor syndrome – we are all victims of it. Stephen says you need to have an exorcism to get it out. The issues are: societal roles, peer pressures, and the traditional values or acceptances that may make women the victim. In her thirties, she found herself juggling motherhood and a corporate lifestyle. Megan realized she had been trying to follow the rules, but sometimes rules need to be broken in order to grow. The Wake Up Call Megan was placed in charge of the division at one of her past jobs and was really proud of her accomplishments. Though she was the head of the division, Megan wasn’t able to have the creative freedom she needed or recognition that she deserved. After a certain point, she was pulled aside by her boss and told that she needed to run the company the way he wanted her to. Style of Leadership Megan’s staff is large and quite varied, so her leadership style sometimes differs. Overall, she strives to have a family-type environment where all opinions can be heard. Zoe MacLaren is a fundraiser, thought-raiser, and spiritual activist who inspires women to reconnect with the unique difference they were born to make. Well, I got a GREAT reaction to the last 100% Jodi episode. That episode was all about getting started on a big goal so I want to continue along this path. Now that you have in your tool box a trick to break down an overwhelming goal into manageable baby steps I want to talk about keeping up momentum. We’ve all experienced this before. We get a vision of what could be, what we want to achieve. We get emotionally involved and can begin feeling what it would feel like to achieve that goal. We become excited by the prospect and decide to go for it. And then the work toward the goal begins. We start with a lot of enthusiasm and that gets us through any initial preparation or adjustments we need to make to our schedule. We start and within a matter of time – it could be days or weeks – we notice life is throwing us some major curve balls. Something unexpected always pops up when you have a big goal. It may then feel like it is taking a force of will to stay committed to the goal. Depending on your mental preparation or the support system you have around you, you may pull through or you may wind up feeling defeated. This is why many people give up before they’ve reached their goal. They were not mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually prepared to deal with the obstacles that would come at them. We have been hearing a lot about the need to pay attention to the food we eat. Our physical health is largely determined by the foods and drinks we put into our bodies and the products we put in our hair and on our skin. If you are avoiding processed foods, consuming whole foods in moderation that are organic and toxin-free, and you make a point to get in physical activities that raise your heart rate and cause you to break a sweat, you are fortifying yourself against most obstacles that would impact your physical health. You will be less likely to get sidelined by whatever illness is going around and taking down those around you. However, what we don’t think about are the things we consume every day that are impacting our mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. And even if your big goal is something like a triathlon, a marathon or a Spartan, it takes more mental and emotional endurance than physical endurance to cross the finish line. What have you learned from your travel, business, and physical adventures? There are painful moments when you go after your big dreams but they don’t last long. What’s important is you have to pay attention to your inner guidance when making big decisions. If it doesn’t feel right it probably isn’t right. Also, it’s important to hyper-focus on what’s important and remove low-value distractions from your schedule. There is a trifecta of things that are scaring Geraldine right now as she continues to grow her business. Do you share any of these fears? What does your system contain that you are consistently applying to yourself and sharing with your clients so they can get to where you are in their own development? I am very aware that I have developed my coaching system for myself. “We teach what we need to learn.” Or rather, we teach what we need to be reminded of. I have a coach-friend who introduced me to the phrase “new level, new devil.” Meaning when you break through obstacles you achieve new levels of consciousness, performance and success. But waiting there to greet you at that next level are the new obstacles you have to overcome of you want to continue to grow and evolve.
