Brian and Elicia's special guest is the incredible Amy Lynn Whitcomb. They chat all things BYU Noteworthy, Delilah, Vocalosity, and more from her illustrative career.

Talkappella: Amy Whitcomb

You know her from NBC's "The Voice" and "The Sing-Off" but today hear Amy Whitcomb like never before—at the piano and singing her own songs.  Amy Whitcomb introduced herself to America when she walked onto the set of NBC’s “The Sing-Off” in 2009. She stood out even though she was one of nine singers in Noteworthy: BYU’s female a cappella group. She had a blonde mohawk, sang a lot of major parts and got plenty of camera time. When the show ended we (especially here in Provo) knew we’d see more of her in the future. Which was exactly what happened.  A couple years later she was back on “The Sing-Off” but this time as the lead singer of a group she helped create called Delilah.  And her penchant for stratospheric belting made her an instant favorite and also had Shawn Stockman (of Boyz II Men fame) dubbing her “a female Steven Tyler.”  And after that she competed as a soloist for team Adam on “The Voice”—now keep in mind all this comes from a singer whose family has “self-proclaimed” tone-deafness and usually only sings at Christmas! Still, Amy’s parents and three older brothers have long supported her love of music—a love that started with piano lessons (that she begged for) at age 4.  With her band, The Whits, Amy Whitcomb opened for Brad Paisley and David Archuleta at Provo’s Stadium of Fire. And released two EPs.  She’s performed at the A-Cappella-Palooza festival in Boston with the likes of Pentatonix, Ben Folds and the Dartmouth Aires.  And this isn’t the first time we’ve had her in our studio—the last time she was here she sang excerpts from the epic rock opera “Deep Love” alongside Savannah Berry, Garrett Sherwood and the duo Midas Whale. Midas Whale

This 'especially for BYU Radio performance' of Deep Love is a journey through passion, obsession, dark deeds, bad intentions and love beyond the grave. A modern breed of classical opera, Deep Love, is a story told through continuous music that blends traditional folk instruments and melodies with bluesy American rock. Ryan Hayes co-wrote Deep Love with Garrett Sherwood in 2010. Since then the show has evolved into a major theatrical, multi-state production. Ryan Hayes narrates. Deep Love tells the story of a young woman haunted by her deceased husband’s ghost. Savannah Berry (of NBC’s The Voice) sings the role of the widow Constance. Constance eventually finds new love with Friedrich (sung by Garrett Sherwood co-creator of the opera). This awakes the jealousy of her dead husband, Old Bones (sung by Jon Peter Lewis of Midas Whale).And also brings on the wrath, rage and jealousy of the woman currently crushing on Friedrich (Florence sung by Amy Whitcomb of NBC’s The Sing-Off). Tim Slover hosts this unplugged episode!Follow Highway 89 on twitter @byuH89
