One of our favorite times at the show is when our Highway loops back to revisit talented artists we’ve met before. Today, in studio for their third time, we have Jon Peter Lewis and Ryan Hayes of the folk duo Midas Whale with new music from their debut album: Sugar House.  The albums’ “a sonic adventure through the American West” a blend of rough and dirty sounds of early rock music with the pure bright harmonies of folk music. And since both Jon and Ryan are songwriters the tracks are all original. In this episode Tim Slover delves into the latest Midas Whale happenings including (but not limited too): their album, their secret society, making music videos while sick, directing puppet shows, taking their rock opera to the moon, and wielding accordions like Stratocasters. This 'especially for BYU Radio performance' of Deep Love is a journey through passion, obsession, dark deeds, bad intentions and love beyond the grave. A modern breed of classical opera, Deep Love, is a story told through continuous music that blends traditional folk instruments and melodies with bluesy American rock. Ryan Hayes co-wrote Deep Love with Garrett Sherwood in 2010. Since then the show has evolved into a major theatrical, multi-state production. Ryan Hayes narrates. Deep Love tells the story of a young woman haunted by her deceased husband’s ghost. Savannah Berry (of NBC’s The Voice) sings the role of the widow Constance. Constance eventually finds new love with Friedrich (sung by Garrett Sherwood co-creator of the opera). This awakes the jealousy of her dead husband, Old Bones (sung by Jon Peter Lewis of Midas Whale).And also brings on the wrath, rage and jealousy of the woman currently crushing on Friedrich (Florence sung by Amy Whitcomb of NBC’s The Sing-Off). Tim Slover hosts this unplugged episode!Follow Highway 89 on twitter @byuH89

The folk duo made their television debut on NBC’s The Voice this year but their beginnings go back to 2009 when Jon Peter Lewis and Ryan Hayes met at an open mic night in Rexburg, Idaho. Ryan Hayes has a master’s degree in geology and host Don Shelline chats with him about his love of all things rock (ba dum dum!), his early days as a trumpeter and his new interest in the accordion. Ryan may also confess in this episode to perfecting his wolf howl while on vacation in Alaska.Jon Peter Lewis reveals that his musical skills extend to refined instruments like the harp and also talks about moving and living all over the United States and how the duo came up with their band name. Follow Highway 89 on twitter @byuH89
