Hot in awards season, BEHIND THE LENS, continues to look at the best and brightest in cinema, in films both big and small. And this week it doesn't get much bigger than Academy Award nominee GRETA GERWIG. But filmmakers all start somewhere and also joining the show this week are JAY DOCKENDORF and KENNY SULEIMANAGISH who are headed to Sundance Film Festival for the first time. There's a reason LITTLE WOMEN nabbed six Oscar nominations this year – Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Score, Best Costume Design, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture – and that reason is Greta and her vision. She is thoughtful, thorough, and meticulous at every level of production, as you'll hear during our conversation. And it is the sum of all the parts that is what led the film to its Best Picture nomination. Listen as we talk about the winning storytelling triumvirate of Jacqueline Durran and her costuming, Jess Gonchor's production design, and Y0rick Le Saux's telling and beautiful cinematography, plus Alexandre Desplat's exquisite score. But we don't stop there. Naz and Maalik is the story of two Muslim black youths who also happen to be closeted gay men, and whose antics have drawn the attention of a local FBI agent. The film unfolds casually as we follow Naz and Maalik and learn the pieces of their story as we go. The film takes a very simple approach to a complicated subject, instead of hammering you over the head with a myriad of social issues, director Jay Dockendorf lets the film play out naturally over the course of an entire day. There are no dire moments of senseless violence or sudden acts of heinous hatred – this is a film meant to leave you with your own thoughts on the story. The film is available Jan 26th on VOD and DVD.
