Welcome to Episode 14 of the Ω Powerband Podcast - a podcast dedicated to rock climbing in Aotearoa New Zealand. In this episode, I speak with the real Paekakariki Express, Kristen Foley. Kristen is an accomplished all-round climber with many decades of local and international climbing under his belt. He is one of my oldest climbing friends and we have shared many great adventures together. In our conversation, Kristen explains his love of climbing and the community around it. For Kristen, it is mostly about the people, the places and the lifestyle. We reminisce about many of our shared experiences, about mutual friends and about some events that have shaped us both. Kristen also reflects on the changes he has seen in the New Zealand climbing community in his time as a climber - the changing pathways to climbing, the flow of climbing information and changing attitudes, ethics and standards. Besides the climbing chat, Kristen recalls a lifetime of parties and antics and tells some cracking stories along the way. It's a classic fireside chat, fuelled by beer and infused with banter.
