Episode No. 601 features artists Jonathan Lyndon Chase and Sheldon Scott. Jonathan Lyndon Chase is included in  "The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century" at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The exhibition, on view through July 16, presents art, fashion and high-end consumer goods in consideration of the influence hip hop has had on contemporary society. It was curated by Asma Naeem, Gamynne Guillotte, Hannah Klemm, and Andréa Purnell. A catalogue was published by the BMA, the Saint Louis Art Museum and Gregory R. Miller &amp; Co. Amazon and  Bookshop offer it for about $55. Chase's paintings, video, sound, and sculpture depicts queer Black love and community. Their work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; they have been included in recent group shows at the ICA Miami, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Columbus Museum of Art, the RISD Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and soon at the Whitney Museum of American Art (opening June 28). Scott is included in "Spirit in the Land" at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. The exhibition considers today’s ecological concerns and demonstrates how our identities and natural environments are intertwined. The show particularly focuses on the relationship between the mainland United States and the Caribbean. Curated by Trevor Schoonmaker, it is on view through July 9. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue which is available only at the Nasher. Scott is presenting a performance titled  "Portrait, numba 1 MAN (day clean ta sun down)" at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans on May 13. Scott's work builds upon his upbringing in Gullah/Geechee culture and his background in storytelling to examine the Black male form. His work has been exhibited at the Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, and more.

Recorded remotely on 1st May 2020 during lockdown, Russell &amp; Robert chat to Philadelphia-based artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase whose paintings and drawings focus primarily on queer black bodies in everyday, domestic spaces.We explore the importance of family including Jonathan's husband Will (who is also their studio manager), sea horses, shyness, Bipolar disorder, identifying as non-binary and the value of having a studio in their hometown of Philadelphia. We discuss humour, depicting the messiness of the human body, bodily fluids, queerness, gender performativity &amp; 'performing' ourselves including Du Bois' Double Consciousness, Judith Butler's Gender Trouble and a recent inspiring quote by Alexander Leon, tattoos, the inspiring music &amp; style of Missy Elliott and more recently Lizzo, science fiction, manga such as Sailor Moon, Afrofuturism, the joy of teaching &amp; their respect for artist Jennifer Packer, the psychology of Francis Bacon's work, Gilbert and George, the influence of nature in particular roses and flowers, being a cat-parent but also feeding stranger's cats and the rare talent of tying cherry stems with your mouth alone!!! Finally we discover that all 3 of us were born under the Scorpio star sign... Jonathan Lyndon Chase (QuarARTine special episode)

In Jonathan Lyndon Chase's paintings, faces go from cartoony (masks, he says) to realistic.  The subject is the body, the black male body, the black queer body.  Jonathan, who got his MFA from PAFA in 2016, is soft-spoken but intense.  Easy to talk with and direct in his answers, no BS.  Four of his works are in the current Fleisher-Ollman exhibit, up to Jan. 28. Among other things in this conversation, Jonathan talks about his materials.  His works are filled with materials-brio.
