I’m Karina host of Elevating la Cultura, and today I’m chatting with Vanessa Avalos, my friend who is opening up a bilingual and culturally relevant playroom called Luna y Cielo. You can definitely hear the passion behind what she is building. She shares so much information about the process of building something from the ground up, and the all of the emotions that go with it. She is seriously working so hard to bring this access to our community. This episode is PACKED with all of the things! I mean we talked about it all. At this point, Vanessa had reached her highest weight, and she knew it was time for a change. She decided to do research on how to get healthier. Vanessa found a YouTube video about intermittent fasting, and started IF that day! She knew that IF would be something she could do for the rest of her life.Vanessa's health has greatly improved! Her acid reflux and congestion are both gone, and she sleeps better. She has lost 66 pounds, going from 240 to 173 pounds. The advice Vanessa would give to new IFers: "Find an IF support group. Take pictures because the scale doesn't always show progress. Don't compare your journey to others. I have two children, ages 6 and 4, and a partner who is super supportive of my intermittent fasting lifestyle. I enjoy helping others learn about it as well. I’ve been intermittent fasting since June 2019 and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. I have not always been obese. I started becoming obese in my mid to late 20s. I was very lucky that I never developed any health issues but always knew that I could because of family history of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. But I did offer from constant sinus infections, respiratory infections, nausea, and acid reflux. I wanted to change the course of my life in the hopes of preventing diseases and live longer for my children. No one can tell me IF doesn’t work because I’m living it and will continue educate others on it. Everything I used to suffer from before, I no longer do because of IF.
