Seminary Students Rachel Haines and Mackenzie Phillips are Rev. Dr. Brad Miller’s guests on Episode 46 of The United Methodist People Podcast.They spoke to Dr. Brad in-depth about college and seminary life and their perspectives on ministry in a time of the pandemic, social, political, and racial unrest and division in the United Methodist Church.Rachel Haines is a 2018 graduate of Emory and Henry College in Virginiaand a student at Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, Georgia.  Mackenzie Phillips graduated from Hope College in Michigan in 2020 and is a student at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. She serves as Associate Pastor of High Street United Methodist Church in Muncie, Indiana.Both women are from Ft Wayne Indiana and both are members of St Joseph’s UMC. They discussed the importance of their home church in their faith formation through youth groups and church camps.Going deeper - the conversation led to how the students were experiencing diverse situations and people in their college and seminary experiences and exploring scriptural studies and developing their own personal ministry philosophy and theological perspective.The students discussed women in ministry and the importance of understanding context and perspective in ministry settings and to really be good listeners.They talked about the challenges of entering ministry during a time of the covid pandemic and the social, political, racial unrest that has pervaded every aspect of life the last year.Moreover, they talked about entering the ministry in the United Methodist Church during a time of division in the church. Rachel Haines is an Organisational Development Director at Klarna, where she leads a team of 250 people across 35 teams and in every global region which they operate. In her role, it is Rachel's team that are responsible for making Klarna the very best place to work for their amazing teams. Klarna are one of Europe's most successful technology companies. Originally starting in Stockholm, Sweden in 2005 with the simple aim of making shopping online easier for everyone, they are now one of world's most recognisable FinTech and online brands and also one of Europe's biggest banks. They now boast offices all over the world and continue to grow at a pace which most of us can only dream of being able to. As a company, Klarna are well-known to have an amazing culture, way of working and for providing exceptional opportunities for their staff. Today, Rachel gives us amazing insight into just how Klarna have been able to achieve some of this success and how they continue to scale at such pace. Part of her mission, was to help re-create the operating model for the entire company. A huge task. Over the past few years, she has been an extremely influential figure at the company and has helped to implement an entire new model in which the company operates on a global scale. Gymnast Rachel Haines was a two-time member of the US Women’s Gymnastics team, two-time National Champion, and Division 1 college gymnast at University of Minnesota where she studied child psychology and earned a master’s degree in family social science. She’s just come out with her memoir, Abused, about her time as a gymnast and as Survivor 195 in the Larry Nassar case. She writes in detail about breaking her back in 3 places and everything she did to stay in the sport after that. Mostly Rachel uses the lens of her psychology training to dissect her time in the sport. She focuses on the culture of gymnastics, being a driven teenager, her own process of healing, forgiving, moving on, and creating a great life after sport. Rachel now coaches young gymnasts and implements her own ideas about improving the sport. We talk about balancing being a strong competitor, safety, and the process of improving and becoming a good person.
