I thought Irwin would be a great person to ask about the different customers he speaks to and find out the genuine reasons people move to Unified Comms. We also speak about the main blockers that prohibit companies from moving to Unified Comms.We talk about whether a cloud-based solution is right for everyone. Some companies will happily pay more than their current solution for new functionality. However, if the use case is simply rip and replace, sometimes the right solution is doing nothing. If the existing system has been paid for and there is little ongoing maintenance, spending more the same functionality is a huge blocker.Irwin runs through some of Nemertes data which shows you probably won't save money in the first year of rolling out a UCaaS solution. Irwin says "everyone is looking for an edge". And this is reflected in general technology press - something that didn't happen even five years ago.What is Unified Communications?Irwin says he's historically defined Unified Comms as the integration of calling, meeting, and team collaboration functionality into a common user interface. "If I want to chat with somebody, call them, and invite them to a meeting, I shouldn't have to move back and forth between applications".Irwin says the next phase of Unified Comms will focus on digital whiteboards which can add ideation and journey mapping. As online learning and general mind mapping use cases before partially or fully remote, collaboration platforms will require further integration to bring in further functionality. As this happens, users will think less about rolling out a platform and more about streamlining business workflows.Nemertes research shows 91% of companies are now using video to support working from home. So the adoption is already happening and we both agree it will continue at a rapid pace.One area where I suggest will decline is mobile UC. With working day more likely to look like in-office or at home, what is the role of mobile UC clients? Irwin's research shows today people are using these for messaging and meetings - but not traditional calling.
