Finding Harmony on an Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike with Liz "Ukulele" Brown

Jodie Morton is an Australian long distance horse rider. She shares the story of her 2019 ride on the Continental Divide Trail through Colorado, Montana and Wyoming with her mare Thelma. We learn the reason behind her ride and how she used this as an opportunity to both heal and bring awareness to mental health issues. Jodie's goal is to change the stigma surrounding depression; by making talking and seeking help an easier process and showing the world it's ok to not be ok (source: Green Gold and Blues). This episode does touch on the subject of losing loved ones to suicide and how that impacted her (mid way through the episode at  28:40).Jodie shares the logistics and planning that goes into long distance riding, including setting up and breaking down camp and the thought she put into Leave No Trace. We are also joined by Amanda Wheelock of the Continental Divide Trail Coalition. The Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) is a national non-profit working in partnership with the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management to complete, promote and protect the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. Founded in 2012 by a passionate group of volunteers and recreationists, CDTC is a membership organization working to building a strong community of supporters who want to see the CDT protected not just for today’s users, but for generations to come (source: Continental Divide Trail Coalition).Amanda shares an overview of the CDT and how her organization works to support it. Hiking the Arizona Trail with Gabby Gilmer

Robin Wilcox, Senior Parks and Trails Planner, with Oregon Parks and Recreation, shares what is being done to close the gaps and make the Oregon Coast Trail an end to end trail. In 2017, Oregon passed a bill that directed the State Parks and Recreation department to work with other interested agencies, local governments and interested parties to develop an action plan to complete the Oregon Coast Trail. Robin shares an overview of the Oregon Coast Trail, the action planning process including the process of collaboration with several other partners in a shared effort to develop a completed trail. She also shares some recommended spots for hiking and enjoying the beautiful coastline. The Oregon Coast Trail (OCT) is a long-distance hiking route along the Pacific coast of Oregon. It follows the coast of Oregon from the mouth of the Columbia River to the California border south of Brookings. The trail was envisioned in 1959 by Samuel N. Dicken, a University of Oregon geography professor, approved in 1971 by the Oregon Recreation Trails Advisory Council. The walking length of the trail varies depending on choice of passage across or around estuaries and rivers along the route. If a ferry is not arranged or available, an alternate route around the estuary must be taken; if traveling on foot, this means road walking. The length of the trail is about 425 miles (680 km) if no ferries are used, though the official coastal guide gives a length of 382 miles (615 km). If no ferries are used, about 39 percent of the route is on the beach, 41 percent is on paved road, and 20 percent is on trail and dirt roads. Felicia Hokenstad is an adventurer, Women Who Hike Ambassador, and an active volunteer for Women of the Wild Midwest. Just a few years ago through she was struggling with anxiety. Through running and hiking, she found that it calmed her and also improved her confidence. Felicia's story resonated with me because I think a lot of people face the same struggles and can relate to finding that peace and a sense of confidence through our adventures in the outdoors. Springer Mountain and the Appalachian Trail

Stacia shares her personal experiences of being on the Appalachian Trail and how it helped her grow and find purpose in life. Finding Your Katahdin with Stacia Bennett

Ashley openly talks about the important role nature played and continues to play as someone with PTSD and anxiety. We talk about nature in healing and how it has not only helped him but how he's seen it in his family life - including the positive impact he sees with his son who was diagnosed with autism.  He shares how he strives to keep balance when he is both the Gentleman (corporate persona) and Lumberjack (outdoorsy persona). We talk about diversity in the outdoors and how Ashley is creating safe spaces for others to explore and feel comfortable in new territory. Ashley also shares how each year he starts rookie season. It's trying something in the outdoors that stretches him and also is new to him. For 2019 it was fly fishing.
