Bridget O'Flaherty, also known as The Sustainable Quilter, is inspired by nature. She is passionate about our environment and feels an intimate connection to the landscape and wildlife of Canada.  Bridget has worked in textile arts for over 25 years and is drawn to fibre for the tactile nature and connection it has to the land. On this episode I interviewed Lani Nagy.  I met Lani through a Facebook quilter’s group when members of the group were welcoming a new member and listing where they were from.  I saw the name of a small town that I had lived in when I was young and just had to connect with her.  I’m so glad I did.  She was a delight to visit with.  Hope you enjoy Lani’s interview as much as I did.  Update: Lani has started a YouTube channel called Crafty Traveler and a Blog called Another Crafty Traveler.

I just love visiting with these quilters and Carolyn Schmitt was no exception! I am so excited to share her story with you. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this active retreaded quilter!Here's some of Carolyn's quilts with her descriptions.I love scrap quilting regardless of the pattern. I say my mind operates like a scrap quilt, so this is a “picture” of it. The blue border is a liturgical color for the Word of God, and the rainbow binding is a symbol of God’s promises.Log cabin is my favorite and I am especially fond this asymmetrical setting. This is a wall hanging made from a few of the blocks left over after making a double bed quilt for my aunt for her 80th birthday in 1997. This one was made for a quilt show. The subject was Crayola crayons. The 2 faces were done on muslin by tracing the outline of a picture of me at 4 years old and one of my paternal grandmother who gave me my first new box of them in 1946. I shaded in all the details with Tsukineko fabric ink. I pre-quilted the main color which looks like a night sky. The flower gardens were English paper pieced in 1930’s Aunt Gracie’s fabrics. They and the pictures were appliqued on and the circles are large, colored buttons. The last one is made from scraps given to me by a friend who makes crib sheets for day care centers. The only fabric that is mine is the gray sashing. I receive the fabric as triangles with the selvage on the long side and the only way to get the 61/2 inch cut square is serge them along the selvage side and cut the square with all bias edges.

Guthrie and I had the opportunity to attend Thelma Oliver’s 90th birthday party this past spring.  And she is still very involved with the church we attend.  What a blessing to spend time with her and enjoy some stories from her life!

What an inspiration to visit with Donna Jones.  After our interview it started sinking in the amazing amount of quilts she has made.  Last month alone she made 9 quilts for her guild to give away!  If you haven’t already, check out her beautiful quilts on my website www.aquilterslife.com.  This one with neck ties were made from the neck ties owned by a man that Donna worked for more than 20 years!

I chatted with Cheri Kenney on this episode.  When I interviewed Cheri we were sitting in her shop Willow Creek Quilters and Crafters.  When I went to edit this episode I was sorry to see on FaceBook that Cheri had decided to close her shop.  I’m sure this must have been a difficult decision for her, but I wish her the best as she begins a new chapter in her life.  It was a joy to visit with this humble and sweet lady.  From the comments on FaceBook I can see she will be greatly missed.  So here’s our chat.

Susan Shillig

Sally Norton

Have you ever worked with someone for a short period of time and years later wonder what ever happened to them?  That’s what happened to me with Sally Norton.  When we first opened our computer business I had the opportunity to work with Sally, then our lives moved on.  So it was exciting to meet her again at a quilt group.  How wonderful to cross paths again and realize we share the love of quilting!  I’m so thankful she took the time to share her quilts and her story with me.

Debbie Hunt

I was thrilled to reconnect with Debbie Hunt.  She used to work at our computer business years ago.  Ran into her at the store and as we visited I found out she was a quilter.  Then I lost her contact information.  So when Guthrie and I turned down the cereal aisle one evening I squealed with delight as I saw Debbie again.  Guthrie just couldn’t figure out why I was so excited to see cereal until he saw me approach Debbie.This is Debbie's favorite quilt.  She calls it "Jewels of Envy". She is working on this paper pieced project.This was one of the many mini quilts she has made.  I love how she has it displayed.Here's the one Debbie keeps on her bed.These two are the same pattern called "Floating Flowers" in different sizes.  The mini quilt was made in 1991.  It was in the state fair under Original Design.  Also, it had an honerable mention in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.Debbie found this "Grandmother's Flower Garden" quilt top.  She did the hand quilting.
