On this episode of the Food About Town podcast, Ben Turiano and Jim Lake from Joe Bean Coffee stopped by to taste a selection of beers from the New England region. Both are practiced at tasting and I was happy to have them join me to go through these eight IPAs from highly regarded breweries in Vermont and Massachusetts.  The first beers we tried were from the Trillium Brewing Company in the Fort Point area of Boston. The day I stopped in I was able to grab the Double Dry Hopped Fort Point (American Pale Ale), Congress Street (IPA) and the Scaled Up (Double IPA) in cans. For most of the canned beers at Trillium, you can walk out with up to a case of each but keep in mind that their prices are slightly higher than the other breweries I’ll be mentioning. Of course their locations are in and around Boston so that is to be expected and the price is one I’d be happy to pay again. This as a good a time as any to mention to those that haven’t been indoctrinated yet that cans are now the preferred packaging method for light and hoppy beers. This is a marked change from the old days where cans contaminated the beers with metallic flavors. Now with proper lining, the can prevents light from damaging the beer and keeps it fresher longer. Hoppy beers still deteriorate over time but this does allow them to last longer than ever before.  From there we moved on to Haze, a double IPA from Tree House Brewing in Monson, MA. Tree House is one of the flavors of the moment in craft beer and on many days you’ll find lines of multiple hours long for growler fills and cans. On the Thursday evening we went, we got a bit lucky and were able to walk in and get a few four packs. I’d recommend trying this method if you aren’t too picky about what you get. We also tried Sip of Sunshine which I grabbed from the Beverage Warehouse in Winooski, VT just outside of Burlington. Beverage Warehouse is one of the finer beer stores I’ve had the chance to visit. This offering from Lawson’s Finest Liquids is a tropical fruit bomb and worth making the drive for. I took a side trip from the Adirondacks to fill up my cooler with Focal Banger, Heady Topper and the Crusher which were the three offerings at the time. Heady was one of the beers that got me into the craft beer scene and coincidentally Ben was the guys that gave it to me. I still adore the smoothness of Heady Topper but I think the Crusher is my new Alchemist favorite. This was a great way to finish up our tasting and thanks to my friends from Joe Bean for suffering through these fantastic beers and recording with me! I have been buying my chicken, eggs and produce from him for a few years now and I haven’t regretted it since. Even throughout the winter, the stored vegetables kept me buying local as much as possible. Now that spring has sprung, I have been enjoying the new asparagus in my cooking at home. F.A.T. Podcast Episode 70 – Fisher Hill Farm

On this episode of the Food About Town podcast, I had two chefs from the New York Wine and Culinary Center over to the studio to discuss what the Center is all about. Chefs Jeffory McLean and Andrew Chambers are very knowledgable about the local food movement and we bounced around all sorts of topics.  If you haven’t made the drive out to Canandaigua, the NYWCC is a fantastic place to explore local NY food through the lens of tasting dinners, special events, and a diverse selection of classes to suit almost everyone.  I’ve had the pleasure of going to three of the themed tasting dinners so far and each has been a solid experience from top to bottom. The dinners are centered around a themed pairing for the night – I attended dinners with Black Button Distilling, Rohrbach and Red Tail Ridge Winery. The cool part about them is that Chef Andrew works with the people behind the highlighted place to find out what makes the products interesting and then pairs based on his interpretation. These kind of events are always a good time and I do recommend grabbing the VIP ticket so you can sample everything for an hour before the rest of the people come in. This episode also include me previewing Farmer’s Creekside Tavern and Inn in LeRoy, commenting on some Seneca Lake wineries and talking about Big Ditch brewing’s entry into Rochester. This week has some comments about the exciting new destination restaurant and boutique hotel Farmer’s Creekside Tavern and Inn. I loved our preview dinner that featured some fantastic food and a meticulously selected wine list. I’ll be having GM Chris Grocki and head wine guy Drew Tschappat on the podcast soon to talk wine and the new spot. I talked through a mini wine tour I took on Seneca Lake including visits to Ravines (balanced and diverse tasting), Fox Run (wide selection for everyone with nice pricing and a great local sourced cafe), Shaw (crafted dry wines with longer aging) and Hermann J Wiemer (beautiful tasting room, well educated tasting assistant and an interesting separation between different grape sources). Thye threw a hell of a party on a beautiful spring day. Way too much food was served including soft pretzels, a well made Reuben and some crispy IPA infused Buffalo style wings. They also had around 10 beers to try including a full double IPA that I enjoyed and a dry hopped Kolsch that had the most weed aroma I’ve ever seen. Great event and check their products out at Wegmans, AJ’s Beer Warehouse or at Beers of the World. On this episode of the Food About Town podcast, I had the fine co-founding gentlemen from Split Batch Brewing over to talk about their upcoming coffee and beer emporium over on St Paul Street. Wade Reed, Jon Mervine and Jarred Foster and I had a bit of a laugh fest and a great time hanging out.  These guys have some solid local ties: Jon Mervine is the former head brewer at Roc Brewing, Wade Reed the head roaster from Joe Bean Coffee and Jarred Foster a former barista at Joe Bean Coffee and a cook at Cure. That combination is sure to make a fascinating place that features coffee, beer and coffee in beer as a key ingredient, not just an afterthought. We started goofing around well before the mics went live and it kept on going through the whole podcast. These guys are an absolute blast to record with and I’m truly excited to see what creations they came out with. I’ve had the pleasure of trying the first sample coffees that they have roasted and it measures up to some of the better coffee in the Rochester area.
