Apologia Church

The Bible isn't a Hodge-podge of disconnected parts and pieces thrown together willy-nilly. The Bible is God's Revelation to the very image-bearers He placed in the world. The Bible is God's story. It is not only the very voice of God to mankind, it is the demonstration of His power in history, His immeasurable love and kindness, His mercy for sinners, and the unfathomable extent of His sovereign plan. That sovereign plan is over the macro and micro issues. It includes the whole story and the little bits in between. Part of that story is the story of Israel: a people chosen for God's own possession. And in Matthew chapter 2, we begin to see that Israel's story is actually the story of Jesus. Only, in Jesus, we have the fulfillment of what Israel (God's son) was supposed to be all along. In Jesus, we have the perfection of the image and light of God that humanity was expected to broadcast out into the world.Jesus' story is perfect. Jesus is the summary of what Israel was supposed to be. Matthew wants us to know. God kept His promises. He is in control. Jesus and the Story of Israel(Matt 2:1-6)

In the Lord Jesus' famous sermon on the mount, we have the promises of divine happiness upon the most unlikely (humanly speaking) of candidates. The poor, the mourners, and now, the meek. The promise of divine happiness upon the meek extends to a point that is very easy to miss. It's not that it is hard to miss. The Lord was not unclear or hiding His statements. We don't have to spend a few months in a seminary course learning how to translate Greek or about fancy systems of Biblical interpretation: Thank you, Professor Herman Newticks.That was a theological nerd joke for those of you paying attention. Jesus' statement was, and is, straightforward:"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."Inherit the earth. Did you catch it? Doesn't sound like what we're accustomed to hear- ing in our current context. That's why it's easy to miss. We can be so focused on es- caping this world, so focused on the evils around us, and so focused on what seems to be defeat all around us, that we can miss what is a clear and direct promise from the lips of our Savior: God's people will inherit the earth; not the wicked.Close your eyes. Take a breath. Meditate on that. Matthew has prepared the ground. He has given us the marvelous announcement that the Davidic King had arrived. He had the right to the Messianic throne. He is the substance that all the prophecies were pointing to. The time had come. God was and is faithful.As we open Matthew chapter 2, I want to dwell on and think through the powerful promise that is quoted by Matthew from Micah. We often miss the beauty of what Matthew is thinking about because we don't go and put our eyes on the actual text that is being quoted. Look at the rest of Micah's text:And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord,    in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great    to the ends of the earth. When the Assyrian comes into our land    and treads in our palaces,then we will raise against him seven shepherds    and eight princes of men; Micah 5:4-5And, this morning, we will celebrate this promise fulfilled. Today we are going to unpack the truths surrounding the Lord Jesus' promise of blessing upon those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.  Over the last couple of weeks I attempted to faithfully handle the biblical possibilities and meaning of the term righteousness in this verse.  It seems unavoidably clear that the Lord Jesus' is speaking here of hungering and thirsting for true 'uprightness' or the righteousness that comes from a pure heart. We are continuing our exposition of the Gospel According to Matthew.  We call this series:  The Kingdom of God.  Matthew's Gospel contains the repeated affirmation of the rule and kingship of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Jesus comes on time and as planned.  His coming is not a "plan B" in the redemptive purposes of God within history.  With that said, we must remember that the Old Testament promised that God was going to do something in history that changed the shape of history, people, and the world... forever.The Messiah was to rule in history.  This rule would be redemptive in nature:  it was about salvation.  This salvation would extend to the ends of the earth and would bring forth the light of God, justice, and the law of God (Isaiah 2, 9, 11, &amp; 42).  The Lord Jesus sits upon the Mount and begins to pronounce His blessings of divine happiness upon His people.  The Beatitudes wrap up with something that ought to give us a moment or two of meditation and thoughtful reflection.  We are the preservative of the world.  We are the means of God's grace for the darkness scattering and fleeing once and for all from the world.This is big.This little section says something about God's purpose for the people of God in the world.  He means to use us for something.  The truth that Jesus saves sinners must never been relinquished or abandoned.  However, the lie that Jesus simply saves sinners must be repudiated and rejected with horror.  God is remaking the world in Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the beginning of the New Creation.  We are all new creations in Jesus Christ.  God intends on reshaping the world through the means of His people:  the church. We live in a culture that doesn't like it's sin pointed out. And in response, we've all heard post-moderns say, "Don't judge me, lest you be judged!" But does this verse really mean that we shouldn't judge? Paul Washer, in one of my favorite quotes, said, “People tell me judge not lest ye be judged. I always tell them, twist not scripture lest ye be like Satan.”I'm really excited to dig into this verse this afternoon and hopefully debunk some common misconceptions. The Gospel of the Kingdom

Many will be interested to know that John the Baptist was a well-known figure in the 1st-century outside of even the New Testament record.  Flavius Josephus (a Pharisee and participant in the Roman vs. Jewish war) writes about John the Baptist's death at the hands of Herod.  He says:“Now some of the Jews thought that the destruction of Herod's army came from God, and was a very just punishment for what he did against John called the baptist  [the dipper]. For Herod had him killed, although he was a good man and had urged the Jews to exert themselves to virtue, both as to justice toward one another and reverence towards God, and having done so join together in washing-”Antiquities 18.5.2 116-119What is the significance of the John the Baptist figure in God's story?  Why is it compelling that John the Baptist came preaching repentance and that he was the forerunner of Messiah? He then empowers us to live lives of obedience and delight in Him.  The great joy we have set before us is to know God and to make Him known.  I want to emphasize that:  Joy. However, as we get on our beautiful feet to proclaim the Good News to the world we will inevitably be confronted with difficulty, persecution, and at times very serious suffering.
