Kerry “Kato” Murakami, the founder of Rectitude Training, LLC, is devoted to training law enforcement and the civilian defender. Kerry is a retired law enforcement officer from the State of Illinois and has spent all twenty eight years in the patrol division. He initially became a defensive tactics instructor and field training officer in 1995, a firearms instructor in 2003 and finally a scenario based instructor in 2014. As a martial artist, Kerry received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Professor Mark Vives of New Breed Training Center in 2019. As co-lead of his department’s scenario based training program and lead instructor of his department’s combatives club Kerry is able to use his skills to create, update, and implement training programs on the range and in the mat room. He has also consulted with outside law enforcement agencies on creating and updating training programs, including their agency's combatives/jiu-jitsu clubs. In early 2021 Rectitude Training, LLC became a preferred provider to Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency (IRMA), one of the largest risk pools in the Chicagoland area. The goal is to increase frequency and consistency of Defensive Tactics/Combatives training while reducing Officer’s and suspect's injuries. It's time for us to create something that is truly fit for purpose.  In this podcast I talk about what I think is the future of our industry. "Crafty Dog" Marc Denny shares his story of finding martial arts at the age of 30 after a wild life growing up in New York (as well as being arrested and put in a Mexican jail while attending law school) and the formation of a system of fighting that the early UFC called "too extreme even for us." Crafty Dog also touches on the psychology and philosophy that underpins the Dog Brothers movement and what he is doing now in his 60's that keeps him excited about training.

As a teacher he produced a video set in 1999 titled simply, ‘Aliveness’ which became one of the top sellers of all time within the industry. It set off a firestorm of controversy, and remained a central catalyst in a Martial Arts training revolution that is still taking place all over the world. They were voted as one of the top five self-defense videos of all time by Black Belt magazine. Matt’s main emphasis over the last decade has been addressing superstition as it relates to the fields of sports training, combat sports, and martial arts; the methodology known as aliveness was designed as a tool to help people distinguish between fact, and fiction.  Over the last few years his writing has branched off into other areas. He is currently working on a book which will cover the topic of violence, and its relationship to both combat sports and skepticism.

Michael VanBeek

This is truly an episode not to be missed! Early in life, Michael was enrolled in special-education classes and given the drug Ritalin. As a result, he endured constant bullying. To compensate for his small and skinny stature and the social stigma of being in special education, Michael’s mother enrolled him in his first martial arts class in 1980. Earning several different rankings in various traditional arts, Michael stumbled upon Jeet Kune Do in the late 1980’s. In the early 1990’s he not only maintained a victorious cage fighting record but also trained with firearms and tactical weaponry as a professional body guard, while finishing his education in Criminal Justice. As a security guard in the greater Chicago land area, Michael was exposed to a side of self-defense/fighting not often seen in the martial arts. After spending most of his life in martial arts, working in bars and clubs, body guard training,  cage fighting, earning black belts and obtaining a Senior Instructorship in Bruce Lee’s Art of Jeet Kune Do, Michael VanBeek thought he had it all figured out. He was wrong – almost dead wrong. His life took an unexpected turn and in 2004, divorce and job loss left him in a severe depression. Within two years Michael VanBeek, the once honorable Sifu, was now using drugs and alcohol to escape his depression and isolation and very quickly found himself homeless. From one side of Chicago to the other, Michael’s goal was survival and in many circumstances, fight or die. Whether fighting to stay alive or fighting to feed an addiction, this was not the life of a once respected martial artist. The Cook County Department of Corrections became yet another reoccurring  challenge. Miraculously, Michael eventually turned his life around, re-entered the world of martial arts and reconsidered his career. He chose to dedicate his life to teaching people to protect themselves from the violence he was once a part of – the violence that almost took his life. Michael realized that much of what the martial arts world had given him was not actually how it was. He began mapping the anatomy of violence, a comprehensive breakdown of the workings of violence from an insiders perspective. Many other "instructors" identified with Michael's message, and soon Focus had locations throughout the country. With a unified goal and service to educate and train people to save their lives from real violence, with honesty and integrity, Focus could now offer “Real Solutions to Real Problems for Real People.” Today, Michael spends most of his time in service working with special needs children, lecturing and presenting seminars on Counter Violence to families, corporations, security firms, organizations and individuals. In addition to running his company, Michael speaks to groups about increased performance, the gift of suffrage and how to rewire our lives for success, using his story to inspire others. Do you know how to spot a potential threat or person of interest in a crowd? Do you know how to explain to a fellow civilian or potentially an emergency dispatcher why something "just doesn't look right"? That's exactly what we're talking about in this episode of the Managing Violence Podcast with Dr Nate Meehan. Dr. Meehan led the JDLR Project research team while he was a Social Scientist at the United States Naval Research Laboratory’s (NRL) Adversarial Modeling Exploitation Office. At the NRL, he also successfully managed a variety of short- and long-term projects for the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Homeland Security on topics ranging from crime analysis to the development of web-based research platforms for visual search. He earned his Ph.D. at the School of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York Albany.  Dr. Meehan is also a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst and worked as the Lead Crime and Intelligence Analyst.  As an analyst, he also assisted on an FBI Operation Safe Streets (OSS) Taskforce targeting violent gang members. Dr. Meehan has also instructed a variety of online and traditional undergraduate college course for SUNY Albany, Excelsior College, and the University of Maryland Center for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism. As Director of Research and Development for Second Sight Training Systems, Dr. Meehan is responsible for developing and implementing course content, evaluation of existing course techniques and processes, the development of new training materials, and the transition of that research into practice. Patrick is the Founder and CEO of The CP Journal and the co-author of, "Left of Bang." Before starting the company, Patrick served in the United States Marine Corps for seven years, progressing to the rank of Captain before returning to the private sector. Through his two deployments to Iraq, he saw first hand the importance of strong leadership and effective training for our nation's protectors.   Following his time as a Company Commander, he became the officer-in-charge of a mobile training team in the Combat Hunter program at the School of Infantry aboard Camp Pendleton. In this role he provided training to deploying infantry battalions and regiments in behavioural analysis. He led the creation of the Combat Hunter Trainer Course, a pilot course designed to make Marines into Combat Hunter instructors. It was in this role that Patrick identified the need for similar training in our nation's police departments and security companies, decided to write Left of Bang and create The CP Journal   The CP Journal offers training programs in behavioural analysis to the military, progressive police departments, and security companies looking to proactively recognise threats and prevent violent acts from occurring. For the private sector, the principles of behavioural analysis are tailored to improve customer service, interviews, negotiations, and sales presentations.
