In today’s episode, Beth Coldrick shares her journey of living with Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis for the past 11 years. Over the last two years, she’s had four major surgeries and is now living with a stoma, raising awareness for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and sharing her story and experiences to help others. Although she struggled with symptoms for most of her life, it wasn’t until 2009 that she was finally diagnosed with both Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Despite being on daily medications and high-strength steroids, she suffered for another 10 years until her surgery in 2019 when most of her large bowel was removed and she was fitted with a stoma.  During that time, as her IBD worsened over the years, Beth had to make major changes to her lifestyle that included moving back home when flares were at their worst and changing careers–using both her skills and passion to launch her own organic vegan skincare brand in 2018. This is a must-listen podcast for people with IBD whether into fitness or not. Stephanie is a skilled interviewer who gets the most and best information out of her guests. I think I say &#34;wow!&#34; at least once a podcast, as I learn, hopefully, better ways to deal with my Crohn&#39;s disease. In today’s episode, Ryanne Sullivan, shares her 20-year journey with IBD. Diagnosed with both Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, she’s learned to manage her symptoms and achieve remission through nutrition and lifestyle. At age 14, she started treatment with medications, like many others, using steroids and 6MP to try and control inflammation and symptoms. But, she often found the side effects of medications to be worse than the IBD itself.  Over the years, Ryanne has found stress to be a major trigger of her flare ups. Right out of high school she started working full time and living on her own, but the stress brought on yet another flare. Remicade helped to put her back into remission, however, it was short lived and soon after she was back to battling Crohn’s symptoms.  After the Remicade failed, her aunt introduced her to “The Maker’s Diet” by Jordan S. Rubin. It focused on bringing nutrition back to the basics of real food, grown in nutrient-dense soil and improving the microbiome. The book kicked off her journey to discovering how she could control inflammation from within. Since then, Ryanne has only had a few flare ups due to the stress from each of her three pregnancies and with the knowledge and experience she’s gained over the years (and continues to gain!), she was able to get right back into remission.  Ryanne focuses her diet around foods and supplements that help reduce inflammation, including plenty of fruits and vegetables and grass-fed meats. Her family eats the same and follows a healthy lifestyle with her, though she does try to let her kids be kids and enjoy the occasional bowl of ice cream and Goldfish crackers :) She’s learned to listen to her body and knows what the first signs of a flare up are for her, which gives her a chance to head off a full-blown flare up by sticking to the basics and giving her gut a chance to heal. Her go-to methods and supplements include intermittent fasting/gut rest, aloe vera capsules (or juice), Protandim® Nrf2 and Nrf1, prebiotics and probiotics, easy-to digest foods and soups, golden milk (made with almond milk, turmeric, black pepper, ginger, and cinnamon), and dandelion tea. As many of us with Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis know, genetics play a role in IBD. Recently, Ryanne’s 8-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Crohn’s and they’re working together to help give her the same level of control and quality of health. Ryanne talks about what it was like to have open and honest conversations about taking a holistic route with her daughter’s pediatrician and gastroenterologist. While medications are not off the table, they are hoping to avoid them. Ryanne’s advice for other parents with children diagnosed with IBD: keep a food journal, learn everything you can about the disease, learn to talk to doctors openly, and  get involved in the community! Today’s guest is Ryan Van Voorhis, who was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in high school and has been living with an ostomy for the past 15 years. Inspired by the health care team who helped him through the early years with Crohn’s, he decided to pursue a Masters in Social Work, which allowed him to begin volunteering as a camp counselor at the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation’s Camp Oasis almost 11 years ago. And he’s been going back every summer since to continue volunteering, serving as the Mental Health Director for the last few years. Two years ago, however, he made the decision to leave his career in social work to pursue his culinary passion. You’ll now recognize him and his best friend since high school, Seth Bradley, as the co-founders of Nude Dude Food in Chicago. They specialize in anti-inflammatory diets and menus for their clients, providing private catering and experiences for small groups. They travel around the country preparing amazing meals and also raising awareness for Crohn’s and Colitis. In this episode, Ryan shares his Crohn’s story, how he spent over five years trying a variety of medications–from steroids to biologics and having severe reactions to many–while never finding remission. After his junior year in college, he faced the decision of having an ostomy; for him, it was a chance to get his life back. In this episode, my husband, Jeff Gish, shares his perspective of Crohn’s Disease as an IBD spouse. He shares his view of what it’s like to live with someone who has IBD and answers my questions about what are some of the things that maybe I should have told him in the beginning or what I could have done (and maybe still do) to help him understand this disease and the roller coaster that comes along with it. While Jeff wasn’t with me during my first truly debilitating flare in 2006, he has been with me since 2015 and through a number of smaller flare ups. He’s watched me go off medications, back on medications, back off again, and supported me through all my wild hair-brained ideas and diets. From fermenting raw milk to carnivore, he’s even traveled with me and an ice chest full of food so that I didn’t have to eat anything I didn’t prepare myself while on vacation. We’ve had many Crohn’s-related adventures that we talk about in this podcast and he gives wonderful insight and advice from being on the spouse-side of things, giving us patients a different understanding of our own disease. It has been truly wonderful to have Jeff by my side, knowing he’ll always be there to back me up. He seeks out places he knows I’ll be able to eat when we go out with friends, doesn’t get angry with me when I have my mood swings because symptoms have come back, and has been an incredible rock and pillar of support that I couldn’t be more grateful to have :) Other than being my husband, Jeff is a forensic engineer (which is like CSI, but for buildings), he’s the reason for my continual escalation of wine snobbery, and probably the most down-to-earth, happy-go-lucky, and easy-going person I’ve ever met, with a sense of humor that keeps me laughing every day...and you’ll definitely get a glimpse of that in this episode!

In today’s episode Sanaa Lynne takes us through her IBD journey–including how she went more than 10 years undiagnosed. She battled a number of different health issues growing up and over the years, her doctors suspected everything from endometriosis and Celiac Disease to Mediterranean Familial Fever. Though she underwent numerous colonoscopies, endoscopies, and a capsule endoscopy, the timing was always off and the procedures were never done when she was in a flare–leaving her doctors reluctant to diagnose IBD. She talks about the struggles and frustrations of a diagnosis taking so long and how it made her question her own symptoms after everyone dismissing her for so long. Finally in 2016, at the age of 25 and after a nearly two-year-long flare up, her doctors were able to diagnose gastroparesis and then Crohn’s Disease. Had she not been so sick and exhausted, she said, she would have been mad at how long it took. But in reflecting back, she appreciated the doctors’ care and caution to not just jump straight into biologic medications and a lifelong illness. But, after failing to respond to medications, she realized she needed to do something to take back control of her health. With the support of a Holistic Medicine Doctor and her husband’s expertise in botany, she began tackling IBD at the roots. Through meditation, mindset shifts, supplements, and dietary and lifestyle changes, she began piecing back her life. Though she was always active growing up, as she got older, life got in the way of fitness. Then, when she was diagnosed with Crohn’s, she allowed the disease to take control of her life. She gave in to the fatigue and the bad days and, although medication helped control the severity of her Crohn’s, she was still sick and not living life to the fullest. One year ago, after taking a good hard look at what she wanted out of life, Ciara started working on changing her mindset, focusing on the positive things in life, and joined a CrossFit gym. She focused on ways she could reduce stress in her life, including changing jobs, and was consistent with her fitness. On the days she felt fatigued, she learned to listen to her body and not her mind; pushing herself to get up and move when she knew her body could handle it. Her sleep improved and gradually, the aches and pains that were constantly there started to fade and her energy levels began to improve. She now feels stronger and more resilient than ever. Finally learning to live her life and not willing to let Crohn’s control what lies ahead, she’s now preparing to move from her hometown in Ireland to Thailand. There, she’ll be spending the next couple of months training at Unit 27 and putting her life on the course that she wants–pursuing fitness as a new career and following her passions. In this week’s episode, I caught up again with Carrie Combs (@carriethecrohnie) to follow up on her recent race at the Nashville Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and to go deeper into some of the emotional aspects of Crohn’s Disease, along with the coping mechanisms and habits that made dealing with a Crohn’s diagnosis even more challenging. At the end of this episode we talk about the half marathon she completed in April with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation’s Team Challenge and run down a quick gear and supplement checklist for distance running! Diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease 8 years ago, Carrie has had three surgeries, countless medication changes, and–as she puts it–a lot of really bad days. We talk about her transformation since diagnosis that took her from using food as a reward (only to find out the things she once enjoyed were causing her harm after her diagnosis), bottling up her emotions, and not asking for help, because she believed she was burdening people, to finally learning how to fill up her own personal cup of happiness and being stronger and more resilient to deal with the challenges that life with Inflammatory Bowel Disease brings. For newly diagnosed patients or family members working to understand IBD, we talk about what it’s like to feel lost in the beginning, not wanting to feel like a burden to the people we love and care about, and how finding a passion or setting goals can help in the journey. This isn’t the place to cheap out–your feet, ankles, shins, hips, and back will thank you later.   Hydration belt: Some people will use the water bottles with a handle. I personally don’t like feeling unbalanced or having anything in my hands, so I prefer a belt. Mine has a pocket for my phone so that I don’t have to have anything else on me. o https://fitletic.com/    Body glide: Any part of your body that touches repetitively over a few hour period will get chaffed if you don’t use this. Episode 19: Carrie Combs returns; we talk emotions, coping with Crohn's, and running!

In today’s episode, Kiersten Thomson shares her journey with Crohn’s Disease and how she leans on the power of food to help manage her symptoms. Diagnosed in 2017, she described herself as stubborn and decided against taking the medications her doctor prescribed after a colonoscopy confirmed Crohn’s. Her doctor, at the time, was adamant that food did not play a role in managing IBD, yet her instincts kept telling her different. Not willing to accept the idea that food didn’t matter, she sought the help of a functional medicine doctor. For the next year, she did well. She cut out inflammatory foods like sugar and gluten and kept to a strict diet. But despite her best efforts, in late 2018, she developed a microtear in her colon. The intense pain sent her to the hospital and she was informed she would need immediate surgery. In a surprising twist however, on the day of her surgery–just minutes before–her surgeon came in and recommended that she not have the surgery. Instead, he told her that she could avoid the surgery if she took medications and followed exactly what he said; she took his advice and followed his plan. Kiersten went on a round of steroids and was then able to start Humira injections, with the help of her first doctor who was able to assist her with the paperwork for Humira’s patient assistance program since she and her husband were self employed and didn’t have traditional insurance. Humira helped her symptoms to calm down for most of the past year, but toward the end of that first year, the effectiveness was already starting to lessen. Kiersten shares her recent decision to come off of medication–from insurance to family planning–and talks about her renewed effort in focusing on her diet and adhering to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. While food has always been a passion for Kiersten, it also became a part of her identity. She talks openly how Crohn’s has challenged her emotionally and created difficulty in figuring out who she was...a former foodie. She’s now embracing a new path, a new reality that has been shaped by Crohn’s. She’s sharing more of her journey, advocating for those with IBD, sharing research and information on her social media, and now revamping her blog to focus on what lies ahead with new SCD recipes and life with IBD. In today’s episode, Alysa Johnsen shares how she’s been managing her Ulcerative Colitis through yoga, mindset, and plant-based nutrition. After being diagnosed with IBD and suffering from the side effects of Lialda, she sought the help of an integrative medical doctor. Once she found a doctor that she connected with, Alysa underwent a number of different test, including a food sensitivity test, that helped her doctor put together a comprehensive plan designed just for her. One year after her Ulcerative Colitis diagnosis in 2012, she was diagnosed with IBS, and in 2018, SIBO was added to her list of gut conditions. Over the past year, she’s tried a number of different diets, acupuncture, exercise, talk therapy, medications, supplements, frequency specific microcurrent therapy, detoxing foot baths and much more in an attempt to help heal her gut. She talks about the long and winding journey that battling gut conditions is and shares everything from the various diets and medications she’s taken to the lasting food fear and anxiety that still remains. Throughout her entire IBD journey, Molly has been determined to find her best health–looking to thrive rather than just survive. Early on, she went through multiple gastroenterology clinics until she finally found one that made her feel like she was being heard and working with the staff, rather than just given medications and dismissed until the next appointment. Her persistence for better care grew over the years as she became passionate about advocating not only for herself, but for others in the IBD and IBS communities. She’s been an active volunteer with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, moderating local support groups and supporting events, and this past summer, she even met with her local government representatives to discuss the needs of IBD patients and issues in the healthcare system, such as medication and procedure costs. Logan began having his first Crohn’s symptoms as a junior in high school. He spent the next 25 years between states of flares, semi-remission, surgeries, and even a 15-year period of complete remission. But it was around 2012 that the long period of being symptom free came to an end. Crohn’s had been out of sight, out of mind and he nearly forgot it was even there. Over the next two years however, Crohn’s was relentless. Logan shares an emotional side and talks about the decision he and his wife had to make in 2014 to move back home with family, unsure of whether he would make it through this flare. He signed up for clinical trials, hopeful to find healing, but also wanting to make a difference and help advance the research that could impact others being diagnosed with IBD in the future. In part 2 of my interview with Rachel Epplin-Rincker, she continues to share her journey with Crohn’s Disease and how important both nutrition and physical activity were, in addition to Remicade, to helping her achieve the best health of her life. We pick up right where we left off on the last episode and Rachel gets right in to talking about how her diet has evolved over the years and what she eats when she’s experiencing a mild flare vs. when she doesn’t have any Crohn’s symptoms. She even talks about how she was able to retrain her gut–a process that took a few years–to be able to eat many of the foods she enjoys but was not able to tolerate at first with her IBD. She focuses on food quality and moderation more than restricting any certain types of foods and is now able to give her body the nutrients it needs to thrive. The energy she gets from eating healthy definitely fuels her activity. A runner since the age of 5, she still enjoys mixing running in with her strength training workouts. She talks about her decision to slowly build a home gym that gave her peace of mind when working out with Crohn’s and also eliminated the need for going in to a public gym with a compromised immune system. While her workouts are intense and consistent, she has also learned over the years to listen to what her body needs, whether during times of flares or sickness or when she was pregnant and required rest. Finally, she talks about what it’s been like to be an active part of the IBD community after spending so many years undiagnosed and not having such a far-reaching support system. She talks about the importance of raising awareness for Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis and urges patients who have access to a Gastroenterologist who specializes in IBD to seek one out. She talks about her decision to slowly build a home gym that gave her peace of mind when working out with Crohn’s and also eliminated the need for going in to a public gym with a compromised immune system. While her workouts are intense and consistent, she has also learned over the years to listen to what her body needs, whether during times of flares or sickness or when she was pregnant and required rest. Finally, she talks about what it’s been like to be an active part of the IBD community after spending so many years undiagnosed and not having such a far-reaching support system. In today’s episode, Stella Rose Carr shares how she’s managed to keep a positive outlook and a good sense of humor while battling Crohn’s Disease for most of her life. Officially diagnosed at eight years old, she recalls what it was like to face her first colonoscopy as a child and how IBD impacted her life from elementary school through college. At 13 years old, she had six inches of her small intestine removed. While things did improve after that, she still found herself sick often from a compromised immune system. Stella opens up and talks about her recent decision to come off of the Humira she was taking in order to try different medications that could offer less frequent injections. Her body struggled for about a year when she switched from Humira to Stelara and she eventually went back to Humira, without the same relief as before, and is now hoping to find remission with Entivyo. Still battling flare ups and symptoms, Stella shares how she’s been able to keep both her sense of humor and overall positive outlook while battling Crohn’s. She gives a lot of credit to The Painted Turtle–a camp for kids with serious medical conditions–and how the opportunity to attend helped her build her confidence and made her comfortable talking about her disease and how to explain it to others. Though she’s always been active, Stella talks about how the role of fitness has evolved in her IBD journey. When Crohn’s prevents her from giving 100%, she incorporates meditative bodywork, breathing, and low-intensity activities like hiking, yoga, or just stretching into her days when her body is run down. I recently had the pleasure and honor of being interviewed on the Intermittent Fasting Stories Podcast with Gin Stephens, author of Delay, Don’t Deny: Living an Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle. Fasting has been one of the things that has truly been life changing in my never-ending quest to manage Crohn’s Disease. Practicing it gives my gut time to rest; allows my body to heal and repair itself; has given me a better relationship with food; and–in an unexpected twist–it has also taught me patience, appreciation for quality, and a desire to remove more clutter (emotional and physical) from my life. It’s a mindset and a lifestyle. In this interview, I talk with Gin and share how my diet has evolved from childhood to where it’s at now. We talk about how I went from eating nearly all processed foods to focusing on a bodybuilding/figure competition diet and how everything changed when I had to start juggling what I could tolerate with Crohn’s. My dietary journey has taken me down keto, carnivore, and now intermittent fasting–where I’m finding joy eating food again and keeping both my health and weight in check. I share how my fasting journey evolved from an unfocused approach that was difficult at first to the clean-fasting approach I take now that allows me to easily go 24-36 hours without eating. I enjoy more foods now than I ever have before and don’t have to worry about counting calories, macros, carbs, fat, protein, or anything at all. Fasting has actually released the control that food had on me. I no longer obsess about being on a diet or how something will affect my metabolism, and every day I’m incorporating more foods that were previously off limits because of Crohn’s. In today’s episode Jackie Robbins shares her 30 year IBD journey. Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at age 8, she spent most of her childhood feeling alone and angry.  Once diagnosed, she was immediately started on prednisone that helped control her symptoms, but caused her to gain weight and eventually wreak havoc on her body image. Her symptoms never fully went away, however, and she spent her entire childhood going into flares. In 1998, at age 17, she had her colon removed and a temporary ileostomy made. Then in 1999 she had her reversal surgery, but things didn’t get better.  While she struggled with symptoms over the next few years, she slowly started to close herself off from the world. Then, in her early 20s, things took a turn for the worse when she suddenly lost the ability to go to the bathroom. She couldn’t hold her bowels anymore and was left having to use a catheter that she later nicknamed her “poop straw.” Though she laughs about it now, and her vibrant personality radiates in her posts, podcasts, and everywhere she speaks, having lost the ability to go to the bathroom spiraled her into a version of herself that you wouldn’t recognize having met her now.  Over those next 15 years, she became more and more distanced from friends and her outlook was negative. But it was only after she found out that people didn’t want to be around her, that she took a hard look at what had happened and how far away she was from the person she wanted to be. She worked on her mindset, focused on exercise (something that has always been a passion of hers), sought the help of a therapist, read many self-help titles, and pushed herself to become the person she wanted to be. Her confidence grew and she started engaging in activities again. When she signed up for a Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation Team Challenge event and discovered how openly and easily she could talk about her own story, she immediately applied to become an Ambassador.  A year ago she sat down and started writing about her experiences. Out of that, came her eBook, The Fearless Academy, 21 Days to More Self Confidence. She’s on a mission now to continue raising awareness about IBD and help others overcome their fears and self-imposed limitations. Jackie’s advice, “You have the power to change your story.
