A Most Unusual Camera (w/Jess Hobbs and Chandler Flanagan)

Hello everybody. This is Eric. And I have some pretty bad news for you considering the podcast. As of now the podcast is ending.   We are both utterly gutted and heartbroken over this decision. We both loved the podcast so very much. And we love the friends and listeners more than they will probably know.  I know for some of you it's just another podcast you listen to. And I get that, I listen to a lot of podcasts myself. But for us it was a colossal part of our lives, and it's absence will leave a gigantic hole.   On the technical end of things, patreon has been paused and will shut down in about a month. I will try to keep it going through June, and you will not be charged for June. If there are any discrepancies here or there about any of the payments, contact me and we'll try to work it out. Patreon is very vague about how all of this works. That's very fitting for patreon  The main feed will be up indefinitely. The money that we have received from patreon in large part will be going towards keeping it alive for as long as the money is there. It costs, as of now, about $120 a year.  I feel the work that we produced was important and meaningful and unique among other photography podcasts. We both want it to be available for as long as possible. We have learned about so many photographers and eras, and did our best to make a show that was as informative as it was entertaining. We hope that you enjoyed it and maybe learned a little something along the way.   For both of us, we thank you so much for your support and your love and your friendship over the years. We covered questions about how to shoot Fomapan (really, how to develop it), what to do with 120 spools, and find out whether a cap of vinegar is acidic enough to turn 500ml of water into a usable stop bath. Earth Oddity and the Sunk-Cost Fallacy (with Amy Elizabeth & Liz Potter) - Episode 79

We talked about photography, of course, but also growing up in Chile, protesting, zine making, creative ruts, and whether raisins belong in empanadas. She was a Tacoma, Washington area photographer whose variety in both style and medium should be celebrated far more than it is today.  Virna showed us that we should not be limited by age or even camera. We shouldn’t confine ourselves to a single medium or format. She even called into question the importance of having our own specific style. She began with photography from the age of 15, and sixty years later had evolved her work into something entirely new. She was constantly experimenting, changing and allowing her art to express whatever worlds she could imagine. She produced so much variety! Here’s a smattering of it…  Contact High Eric visited the Contact High exhibit at Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture. The exhibit features over 100 contact sheets taken of the hip-hop community.   The show was mostly old school, golden age – Grand Master Flash through Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, but also covered Missy Elliot, Tupac, Mos Def.  He also picked up the Contact High book by Vikki Tobak, which contains most of the contact sheets (no De La Soul, for example). Plus many more. Usually shows a full page version of the most popular frame from the sheet. While the show was heavier on the golden age, this has a lot more 90s and 00s. Each contact sheet has a blurb by the photographer. All Through A Lens is by far my favorite film photography podcast! Eric and Vania inform their audience in a way that makes us feel like we are just listening to a couple of our friends chat. Sure their might be some explicit language and some great blooper clips, that’s what makes their podcast so good. They are unpretentious, knowledgeable, and so much fun to listen to. Episode 03: Kinda Need to Go to Kansas

On this extra-spooky episode - 004. The Illusion That They Were Still Alive - Vania (@surfmartian) and Eric (@conspiracy.of.cartographers) go a bit longer than usual, but we assure you it’s worth it (and still shorter than most podcasts).   Things start off in a fairly normal way as we say hello and have a quick chat about Ilford’s “new” Ortho 80. Are we excited? Sure. Are we incredibly excited? Listen and find out. We then check the answering machine, which is also a normal thing.    This week’s messages are all about unexpectedly fruitful locations. We’ll hear from @elgatomagnifico @mike_on_film @ninlyone @jtheokauth and @space_critter. We also give some vague ideas about our locations.   Here’s where things get a bit spooky, so hold on. For this episode, Vania dug into the Victorian tradition of post-mortem photography. Get ready for some sad and interesting photos of dead people. But digging a bit deeper, she found some deathbed photography and even some pet photography (dead, of course).  It might seem weird now, but it was pretty normal then. Basically.   This led to a talk about old timey photos, which prompted us to give Jennifer Froula Weber (@jenniferfroulaweber) a call. She’s a tintype photographer who began her analog camera journey with tintypes (seriously). We talk not just tintypes, but history, the magic of 620 cameras, and how Swedish silent films have influenced her work. (Also, big shout out to Scout Finch.)   But then it’s back to the 1800s (though it’s not really like we left it with Jennifer) for Eric’s piece on William Mumler, Spirit Photographer. He claimed to have accidentally captured a spirit on a glass negative while taking a selfie. And there it is, clear as day - the ghost and Mr. Mumler. This “accident” was replicated hundreds of times and made him a whole slew of money. Was he arrested for fraud? Was P.T. Barnum involved? How about Mary Todd Lincoln? Find out!   We end the episode with a bit of a primer for the next episode, when we’ll have our first movie night and watch Hitchcock’s Rear Window, a film that stars the Exakta Verex VX (as well as Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly). Episode 04: The Illusion That They Were Still Alive

On this episode, we’ve got tips from listeners, a call with Iowa Amy, how to do your own tri-chromes, we’ll talk about a couple of pictures we took, there’s zine reviews and so much more. We first check in with each other. Vania is looking for inspiration, but realizes it’s been there all along. Eric just wanted some snow. Sort of. Vania talks about how the camera is her way of interacting, while Eric realizes that he’s getting old.  Those who bought the Slow Meow film are thanked, and those interested in the ECN-2 process are invited to find out via the kits Eric is making: Here.  Moving on once more to the answering machine, we asked listeners to call in with their film photography tips. Just one, and make it quick. The response was great! We received such advice as “don’t be afraid” and “every frame is a lesson” to the practical advice like “throw away the lens cap” and “get an immersion heater.” It was a lovely mix. Thanks to all who called in! Vania and Eric gave their own tips as well. Obviously.  We then gave a call to Amy Blessing. You might know her as @iowaamy on IG. She was in the first American Colors show in St. Louis and is working on a project and book documenting towns along the Mississippi River in Iowa. If you’re not familiar with her work, it explores the empty spaces of small town, Midwestern life. While many will often overlook this part of the country, Amy and her photography embody it. We talked to her about her rural work, and shooting in the Midwest in general.  DIY Tri-Chromes! After the call, we dig into how to shoot your own tri-chromes! These are the color photos that are actually created by three black &amp; white photos layered together. Here’s a quick rundown: First, you’ll need some panchromatic black and white film. Let’s just use Tri-X or T-Max or basically anything that isn’t Ortho. Something fast works best. Get yourself a camera, a tripod and a red, green and blue filter. These can be cheaply procured in a color filter set, or more expensively procured individually as filters with the Wratten numbers of 29, 61, and 47 (red, green and blue). Find a subject – something with various colors represented. Set up the camera on the tripod and take three photos – the first through the red filter, the second through the green, and the last through the blue. I do them in this order so I can remember them when it comes time to scan. Make sure to not move the camera even a little. You want three identical pictures.and you will be needing to line this up in photoshop.  Develop the film in your favorite black &amp; white developer, and then scan them in as normal. It would be a good idea to name them as “red,” “green,” and “blue” just so you can keep track of them. Then open the images in your photo editor and align them to each other so that they’re all perfectly matched. Starting with the red layer, you want to “colorize” it. Open the colorize menu (the location varies) and tint it red. This “hue” is usually represented by “0” on the color wheel. Then set saturation to 75 and brightness to -30. Do the same with the Green and Blue layers – setting the hue to 120 and 240, respectively (on some editor, it’s 33 and 66). The saturation and brightness are the same as with the red. Now we’re almost finished. All we have to do is make them transparent. In the Layers panel, we need to set this to “Screen” for the top two laters and “Normal” for the bottom (at this point, it doesn’t matter which layer is where). Once we do this, the color image will appear!  Next on the episode, we take a look at two of our photos, both from the Fuck Yeah We Do zine. Eric chose this:  While Vania chose this:  Both go on about it for a spell. Zine Reviews On this episode, we reviewed two zines. The first was Camerastickers by Ethan Cameradactyl.  In Ethan’s own words: ‘They are the lowest quality prints you’ve ever seen in a zine, and the binding is even worse. The books are bound to fall apart, and the stickers are all thermal, which is basically the opposite of archival. But they’re pretty fun. I think you and Vania and most of your listeners would probably get a real kick out of them.’ The other zine was Every Bus Stop Has Its Own Coffee Shop by Richard Hall. This is a color and black &amp; white halfsize zine that’s really a lovely stroll through Shrewsbury. Along the way, we stop to hear him point out bits of history and information. There’s the Welsh Bridge, The Buttermarket (aka Butters), and Shrewsbury Abbey. But this isn’t simply one tour. This zine takes place over the entire year, night and day. There’s the evening life in the market, and a morning commute up St. John’s Hill. We wind our way through the streets, and along the river until finally returning to the Porthill Footbridge. You might know her as @iowaamy on IG. She was in the first American Colors show in St. Louis and is working on a project and book documenting towns along the Mississippi River in Iowa. If you’re not familiar with her work, it explores the empty spaces of small town, Midwestern life. While many will often overlook this part of the country, Amy and her photography embody it. We talked to her about her rural work, and shooting in the Midwest in general. <a href="https://allthroughalens.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/amy2.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"></a> DIY Tri-Chromes! After the call, we dig into how to shoot your own tri-chromes! These are the color photos that are actually created by three black &amp; white photos layered together. Here’s a quick rundown: First, you’ll need some panchromatic black and white film. Let’s just use Tri-X or T-Max or basically anything that isn’t Ortho. Something fast works best. Get yourself a camera, a tripod and a red, green and blue filter. These can be cheaply procured in a color filter set, or more expensively procured individually as filters with the Wratten numbers of 29, 61, and 47 (red, green and blue). Find a subject – something with various colors represented. Set up the camera on the tripod and take three photos – the first through the red filter, the second through the green, and the last through the blue. I do them in this order so I can remember them when it comes time to scan. Make sure to not move the camera even a little. You want three identical pictures.and you will be needing to line this up in photoshop. <a href="https://allthroughalens.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/color1.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"></a> Develop the film in your favorite black &amp; white developer, and then scan them in as normal. It would be a good idea to name them as “red,” “green,” and “blue” just so you can keep track of them. Then open the images in your photo editor and align them to each other so that they’re all perfectly matched. Starting with the red layer, you want to “colorize” it. Open the colorize menu (the location varies) and tint it red. This “hue” is usually represented by “0” on the color wheel. Then set saturation to 75 and brightness to -30. Do the same with the Green and Blue layers – setting the hue to 120 and 240, respectively (on some editor, it’s 33 and 66). The saturation and brightness are the same as with the red. Now we’re almost finished. All we have to do is make them transparent. In the Layers panel, we need to set this to “Screen” for the top two laters and “Normal” for the bottom (at this point, it doesn’t matter which layer is where). The books are bound to fall apart, and the stickers are all thermal, which is basically the opposite of archival. But they’re pretty fun. There’s the Welsh Bridge, The Buttermarket (aka Butters), and Shrewsbury Abbey. But this isn’t simply one tour. This zine takes place over the entire year, night and day. There’s the evening life in the market, and a morning commute up St. John’s Hill. For our first movie night, Vania (@surfmartian) and Eric (@conspiracy.of.cartographers) watch Hitchcock’s Rear Window. But before getting into it, we catch up a bit with each other. Vania found herself on the other side of the camera, while Eric contemplates the end of the season as well as a parking garage.   This week’s answering machine was full with calls from @kino_pravda, @kollimatorn, @hannah.grace.photo, @space_critter, and @elgatomagnifico. We asked how cinematography and the movies have affected their photography, and we were not disappointed. Were Dziga Vertov, Napoleon Dynamite and the Cartoon Network all mentioned? Of course they were.   Vania shares a bit about Kubrick and Eric feels the need to defend Rashomon.   We then put down the cameras and plop ourselves in front of the screen for the main feature: Rear Window. After a brief introduction, we give Hannah Drew, actor and film photographer, a call. As a trained actor (and untrained photographer) she offers a perspective we couldn’t have.   The talks winds from her own influences to the pros and cons of being a voyeur. We talk about why Hitchcock made Jimmy Stewart’s character a photographer and how “Jeff” was kind of a dick to Lisa, played by Grace Kelly. We ask if it’s okay to watch others, and what we can learn about our own lives through it.   Most importantly, we ask each other which of the neighbors we’re most like. The project took him through four states and nearly 2,000 miles. And after 80 shots, almost all of them were badly damaged. But why? How did this happen?   Without pointing fingers, we talk about the project, the original plans, the disaster and finally what to do to recover. Sad Eric.   With that out of our system, we turn to the answering machine and a question with a few more shades of gray than we figured. Episode 06: I Can't Say Failure

Everyone is locked up in their houses now or something, and what choice do we have? So we’ll talk about social distancing and creativity – Creative Social Distancing? – we’ll give a call to Ethan from Cameradactyle, talk about wire photos and what they have to do with a James Stewart movie, and zine reviews. After a sort of meandering wellness check (including a talk about an exhibition Vania’s in), we hit the answering machine! I Hate Your Answering Machine We asked listeners to call in and tell us how social distancing has effected their creativity. The array of answers was encouraging. Despite being closed in and often separated from friends and photolabs, our listeners have got their collective shit together. Some are building darkrooms, one is building a camera out of his bedroom (like the entire room), another is perfecting old and forgotten color chemistry, some are still working in the healthcare field and use photography to keep them going. Lots of people are being creative in lots of ways. But it’s also important to remember that we don’t need to be creative now. It’s okay to not be. It’s okay to not be able to be. Shoot Inside Challenge Thing That said, we’re offering a way for you to stay creative if you want to – and to do it indoors. For those who like challenges and being tasked with things, we’ve got the Shoot Inside Challenge Thing for you! Each episode as this whole virus thing blows over, we’ll give you a challenge. Points for absurdity. Interview On this episode, we checked in with Ethan from Cameradactyl. We talk about 3D printing medical parts, new cameras, new camera ideas and the movie Call Northside 777. There’s a lot going on in his shop these days, and we talk about a good fair amount of it. Sending Photos By Wire  Inspired by the Jimmy Stewart movie Call Northside 777 (1948), we dig into the history of the wirephoto – actual photographs sent over telephone wires long before the internet. We explore the early attempts at this, starting with etchings encoded and sent via telegraphs. But soon we’re mentioning names like Arthur Korn and Édouard Belin. And when Western Union, AT&amp;T and the Associate Press get into the game, all bets are off!  Here’s a quick rundown on how all of this worked: After the print was ready, it would be attached to a cylinder on the transmitter. This cylinder would spin 100rpm under a more modern photocell. A small lamp would shine a very small light onto the print, which would be reflected back onto the photocell. The cell, as before, would turn the array of gray tones into signals that could be transmitted across telephone wires to a receiver. This receiver held a piece of photopaper on its cylinder. As it spun at 100rpm, the signals coming across the wire would be translated back into light. The varying lights and darks were exposed to photopaper making a positive print. Reproducing the entire photo took around 10 to 17 minutes. By the end of the decade, these transmitters were made small and basically portable, fitting in a large suitcase. All that had to be done was to tap into an existing phone line and send the photo to a receiver near a darkroom.  The wreckage of a small plane lies in a wooded area near Morehousville, N.Y., Dec. 31, 1934 after a crash landing three days earlier. The four people aboard were reportedly not seriously injured. This photo is believed to be the first photo transmitted to Associated Press members on the AP wirephoto network, Jan. 1, 1935. Kenny Rogers We lost Kenny Rogers recently, who also happened to be a large format photographer. Here’s the original article about his photography that everyone keeps referencing and not linking back to. Rogers started as a kid with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye and eventually traded up to a Hasselblad. He got really serious about it when he picked up a Linhof Master Technika 4×5. He published a book of landscapes and then moved onto 8×10, he shot portraits with that mostly, publishing two additional books from those. And that’s the show! Episode 15: Make Me A Sandwich

On this episode, Vania and Eric talk shooting with people (or not), we’ll call up a very special guest, and dig into color photography before the invention of color film. We’ll also finish up our trilogy on zine making. Plus zine reviews and the announcement of a “new” old stock emulsion. But first, Vania’s been sick (though it’s not the annoying and mild Man-Flu). Still, she managed to do some shooting. She even surfed with a gray whale. Eric also shot some 4×5 and with the 6×7 back to varying degrees of amusement.  Before getting into the thick of the show, we announce The Slow Meow – a slow speed Soviet-era microfilm (Tasma Mikrat 200) that they’ve teased for literally months now. It’s for sale via Eric’s Etsy Store and all proceeds go to help funding the podcast. Episode 12: The Colors or Some Shadow or Something

For this episode of Dev Party, we’re taking on ECN-2! This is the color process usually used for motion picture film. But can it also be used for regular color film? Yes, absolutely.  Eric has done this for years, and Vania is dipping her toes. We talk about the process itself, and especially about how it differs from C-41. There’s a very brief history of it, some short explanation of what it is, as well as some mention of stop baths and washing. Future Eric and Vania also take a look at the scans they’ve made with the negs (which means there was great success!). For this episode of Dev Party, we’re taking on ECN-2! This is the color process usually used for motion picture film. But can it also be used for regular color film? Dev Party #6: Dev Party and Bullshit

It’s our Box Camera Appreciation episode! And wow do we have some box camera appreciation for you! First Eric and Vania tell everyone what they’ve been up to. Eric’s been wrestling with the 120 back for the Polaroid Automatic Land Cameras, while Vania’s been shooting in the water, getting older (but not old) and mentions a few new books.   Now delving into box cameras, we asked listeners to call in and let us know which ones they’ve recommend for friends. We got answers and Eric has shot most of them. Who knew?After the messages, Vania and Eric gave their own recommendations.  After a bit of discussion, we give a call to Jennifer Froula Weber (@jenniferfroulaweber on Instagram). We’ve talked with her before about her tintypes, but now we’re talking box cameras (and tin types – you’ll see).  She and we talk which boxes she likes best, why she shoots T-grain film in them, and why she’ll often choose them over her Hasselblad.  After the interview, we deep dive into a short history of the box camera. We begin by trying to figure out just what is a box camera, but quickly move on to the 1870s and the very first of these simple little cameras. From there, we talk George Eastman’s early attempts at boxes, as well as the Boston Bulls Eye. It finally came together for Kodak when Frank Brownwell came up with his Brownie… and the many, many more that followed.  We also explored the many competitors to Kodak’s offerings, as well as how the designs changed from simple boxes to rocket ship dreams in colors of teal, mint and red.  While Vania talked about her new zine in the last episode, Eric talks his new issue in this. It’s Conspiracy of Cartographers Issue Seven, and it was all shot on the Imperial Savoy – a plastic 60s box camera. We continue the zine talk with the second installment of our how-to-zine segment. Here, we discuss sequencing the photos, as well as layout and computer programs. The third and final will come next!  And speaking of zines, on this episode we also review Michael Tekel’s In Silvam Sciryuda. “When I moved to Nottingham UK, I didn’t know many places around here. Except for legendary Sherwood Forest. I wanted to see it. I went, I saw and I was not impressed at first. That’s how this zine project started – with the goal to capture the true soul of this place”. Eric’s been to a waterfall where the owls are not what they seem.   Keeping things moving, we hear from a slew of folks about lines they won’t cross while photographing. A large part of photography is literally not taking photos. While some won’t photograph homeless people or children, others refuse to snap pics of injured roller derby skaters. Vania and Eric both weigh in on the thing as well. Last episode, Vania mentioned the new issue of her zine in the briefest of passings, but now Eric tries to squeeze more information from her.  Speaking of zines, we talk somewhat briefly in the first installment of a how-to-zine overview. This time it’s about deciding upon a theme (or not), about titles, words and just getting your shit together. And then we call up Adam Roberts – aka @icantstandpickles on IG. He has recently released a 3-D zine, which comes complete with 3-D glasses. You need to see this to believe it, and you can pick it up here (and should).  Changing gears for a few moments, we report on the execution photo of Ruth Snyder. Taken in 1928 by photographer Tom Howard, the image of a woman in the moment of electrocution was published on the front page of the New York Daily New. Soon the photo became more of a story than the execution itself.  Since cameras were forbidden in death chambers, how did Howard get this shot? What does this have to do with James Cagney? We shall tell you!  Moving on, we make our way to a couple of zine reviews. Vania talks about Leland Buck’s Paris Syndrome, while Eric digs into 365 No. 7: Analog by Trench Photos (@trenchphotos365 on IG).
