The Rise and Fall of Archaeology with Stone Age Herbalist

'The Anglo-Saxon migration and theformation of the early English gene pool' by Joscha Gretzinger and colleagues (2022) has answered some of the much debated and controversial questions concerning the Anglo-Saxon invasion of England which began in the 5th century AD. The study finds that as much as 75% of the ancestry of skeletons from England in the cemeteries from that time comes from Germanic migrants from Germany and Denmark. Sacred Mead of Poetry: What was in it and what did it mean?

A reading of the poetry of Ezra Pound. This excerpt from Ezra Pound's translation of an Anglo-Saxon poem called The Seafarer is a quintessentially Poundian example in its treatment and translation of poetic forms. First I read the translation by Ezra Pound and then the original Old English Anglo-Saxon version. The translation by Pound is only of a segment of the poem so I have only read the part of the Anglo-Saxon poem that Pound translated. This recording was made in 2012. Truly this is the English language at its best, the translation by Ezra Pound is closer to the sound of the original, rather than the meaning, and therefore retains its style.

The greatest pagan Viking hero is my hero Hakon Jarl. He was a reactionary apostate who restored the temples and sacrifices and promoted paganism across Norway and beyond during the 10th century. He was against Danish Christian power in Norway and ought to be remembered as a hero to pagans all over the world. I also think he was the inspiration for the Skyrim character Jarl Ulfric. National origin myths and narratives of identity

Magic is synonymous with paganism but that is due in part to misconceptions. Magic exists in the Jewish and Christian traditions too and not all pagans used magic or performed divination. Magic is not a form of devotional piety for pagans. Historically, the only form of magic that seems to be associated with piety is prognostication in the service of the state/ethnos. Even other forms of prognostication were really separate from normal religious activities. Professor Alan Outram, Head of Archaeology at University of Exeter is one of the world's leading experts on ancient horse DNA and the domestication of the horse. In this interview he explains how his views have changed since his 2009 paper on the Botai domestication of the horse. Prof. Outram contributed to a paper, published in May 2018, entitled, “The first horse herders and the impact of early Bronze Age steppe expansions into Asia” in which the Yamnaya, most likely the Proto-Indo-Europeans, are posited as the potential domesticators of modern horses, rather than the Botai who were pushed out of Kazakhstan by the Yamnaya or related steppe pastoralists.
