This is certainly a story of love, compassion, inclusion and service. First, though, we must get out of the way that the older ladies in the practice say that he is a “Strapping Young Man”! One team member tells the story of arriving at the practice and being told that “our office is like a family”. She kind of rolled her eyes and just went with it because that’s what most offices say. Then she told about the unexpected passing of her brother just four months later and the love and kindness and support she received from the entire team led by her doctor. AND...how over the years she has watched this same compassion shown to so many both inside and outside of the practice who have faced hardship. He is the gatherer...the one who brings everyone together to see how collectively just the right support can be achieved. He started his dental practice from scratch at the same time he was serving in very time-consuming responsibilities in his church and community. He accomplished this with a wife who had severe health challenges which kept her home-bound most of the time. Despite those obstacles he is the most enthusiastic cheerleader for his kids, provides endless service to his neighborhood and has been on a humanitarian trip each year to the Dominican Republic since he graduated from Dental School.Shortly said, he lives a life of purpose...on purpose. While graduating and finding a job at the start of a pandemic was stressful, this one young dentist wasted no time deciding to work at a community health center. Inspired by her own heritage, she entered dentistry with a passion to change discrepancies in oral health, especially in minority populations with patient education and compassion. What else has stood out to you as you’ve worked with this nominee for the Young Dentist of the Year award.  Dr. Cherish Dunshee served her peers at Roseman University by serving as Class President for 3 years, as well as the Study Body President. As a natural leader, she was both loved and respected by her peers and the faculty for her kindness and empathy for everyone. Her desire to bring people together and listen to their concerns are qualities she now shares with her patients at Sacred Circle Healthcare.  When she isn’t seeing patients she finds joy spending time outside with her husband and daughter. Together they enjoy all of the beautiful landscapes Utah has to offer hiking and snowboarding or attending concerts.  The Crown Council has been served by some of the best young leaders in dentistry. After graduating from High Point University in North Carolina in 1989, he attended Temple University Dental School graduating in May of 1993. He joined the Indian Health Service as a Bush dentist in Bethel, Alaska for 4 years. He enjoyed his experience flying 22 weeks of the year taking care of native Alaskans. Joe gained much; honing his dental skills working up to 14 hours per day. In 1997, he transferred to Anchorage to the Alaska Native Medical Center. Over the next three years, he was mentored in emergency hospital dentistry. This included many hours in the operating room with an oral surgeon and additional Operating Room time with pediatric cases. He valued the continual opportunities to further his education in all clinical specialties through lectures and one-on-one clinical mentoring. From there, Joe associated with Dr. Jim Libby from 1999-2006 when he became co-owner of Alaska Premier Dental Group and GentleCare Dental Center.

My goal was simple. I’ve had great success as a dentist and built a fine practice – in spite of myself. I messed up lots of things, but have done a pretty good job of cleaning up, too! I wanted to share that. I wanted save you all my mistakes and achieve all that I have, only faster and with less pain. Not to tell you what to do, but to help guide you toward whatever it is you want. My book’s title comes from a course that was taught during my freshman year of dental school. No one in my class took On Being a Dentist seriously, and with good reason. It was crap. Oh, I know the faculty tried hard and meant well. They just had no idea what real world private dental practice was like. Most of them had never been there or even in the same zip code for that matter. They approached the class from an academic’s perspective. Fine if you want to teach and do research in a dental school, but the vast majority of my class didn’t. They wanted to be self-employed private practice doctors and On Being a Dentist was nine miles from that. Hopefully, this book is a little closer to the mark. I do, along with a partner, own my practice. We cold started it together and we have merged three doctor’s practices in with us. Over the course of more than two decades, I haven’t quite seen it all, but when it comes to the business of dentistry, I’m much closer than that pathetic class our freshman year. Further, I have also been an employee and a resident. I can give you real world perspective from several angles. To do that, I’ve taken quotes from mentors and authors that over the years have meant a great deal to me in growing my practice. I took what these wonderful people had to say and expanded on it, adding in my experiences – good and bad – toward that goal of helping you not make my mistakes. Growing up around dentistry, my dad would take us to work with him during the summer. We would get paid $2 per hour to unpack boxes, clean the lab, make stone models of teeth, etc. I realize now after having my own kids, he really did it so we wouldn’t drive my mom crazy at home fighting all summer. Several years passed and after living out of the country for a few years, I returned home and it just felt like the right path for me. I have never regretted the decision and love being a dentist. WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND OR A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? When I am not working, I try to stay active running and biking. I spend a lot of time with my kids at their football games, dance classes and skateboarding lessons. On Sunday afternoons you will find me relaxing and watching a movie with my family. ANY VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES YOU’RE CRAZY ABOUT? I have been involved with the group, Smiles for Hope, for 5 years now. It takes dentistry into the small villages of the Dominican Republic. I was able to take my wife Maury with me four years ago and this year we went back with my two older boys, Connor and Cash, and 6 Harris Dental team members. We spent 9 days in small villages helping people that have no access to dental care. It has been a life changing opportunity and I feel thankful to be a part of such a great group. ANY AWARDS OR MEDALS? PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL? In the 5th grade, I won first place in the Utah open Karate tournament. I only mention this because I had to fight my brother, Dr Scott, in the finals. Let’s just say he took second place. Still, one of my proudest moments.
