Dan Weiss, president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, served as the judge of the 2021 Plein Air Easton art competition.  As we worked with Dan during the festival, we found him to be a passionate, kind, and easy-going man that was able to say incredibly intelligent things in a way that felt connecting when other wise people may sound exclusionary.  He joined us virtually from quarantine to share the story of how he became such a uniquely qualified candidate for his role at the Met and express his love for Plein Air painting. A scholar of art history and a seasoned leader of complex institutions, Dan Weiss was previously President and Professor of Art History of Haverford College and, from 2005 to 2013 of Lafayette College. He holds an MBA from Yale and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in western medieval and Byzantine art, where he joined the art history faculty and in six years rose to full professor and then chair of the department. Three years later, he became the James B. Knapp Dean of Johns Hopkins’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. He holds a BA in Art History and Psychology from The George Washington University.   The author of six books and numerous articles, Weiss has published and lectured widely on a variety of topics, including the art of the Middle Ages and the Crusades, higher education, museums, and American culture. His most recent books include In That Time: Michael O’Donnell and the Tragic Era of Vietnam (2019), and Remaking College: Innovation and the Liberal Arts (2013). Earlier in his career, Weiss spent four years as a management consultant at Booz, Allen &amp; Hamilton in New York.  The recipient of fellowships from Harvard University, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Weiss received the Business and Society Award from the Yale School of Management, the Van Courtlandt Elliott Award from the Medieval Academy of America for scholarship in medieval studies, the Distinguished Alumni Award from George Washington University, and he was inducted into the Society of Scholars at Johns Hopkins in 2018. Betty Huang is an artist, the owner of Studio B Gallery, the current president of The Working Artists Forum, and a long time partner of Plein Air Easton.  Tim and Jess sit down with Betty in the studio to find out more about how she became so ingrained in Easton's art scene. A well-respected and award-winning artist, Betty is also the owner of Studio B Art Gallery in Easton, Maryland. A Wonderful Journey with Betty Huang

As one of the founders of Plein Air Easton, artist Nancy Tankersly is a visionary that anticipated the growth of the Plein Air movement and took that opportunity to begin what has grown into the largest outdoor painting competition in the country.  Tim and Marie ask Nancy about the beginnings of Plein Air Easton, her definition of Plein Air, and the broader meaning of the growing movement. Nancy Tankersley began her career as a portraitist but entered the gallery scene with figurative paintings of people at work and at leisure. Currently as she searches for the unpredictable, Tankersley moves between landscape, figures and still life. Incorporating non- traditional tools , supports and technologies for her paintings she remains faithful to her impressionistic style. Active in the current plein air movement, and a founder of Plein Air Easton, she travels worldwide participating in competitions, judging and teaching. In 2018,2019 and 2020  she was invited to be an instructor and demonstrator at the Plein Air Convention in Santa Fe and released two instructional videos with Lilliedahl Videos. In 2016 and 2017 she was invited to exhibit at the prestigious Masters Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in NYC. Recent honors include Best of Show at Parrsboro, Nova Scotia International Plein Air 2018, Best of Show at the Lighthouse Plein Air Festival 2017 and the Dickinson Award for Best Painting by a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society 2016 Annual Juried Exhibit. In 2019 she was selected to be the Featured Artist at the 49th Waterfowl Festival in Easton, Maryland.  She is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, the American Society for Marine Art, and the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters and also holds memberships in the Washington Society for Landscape Painters and the Salmagundi Club. The Importance of the Plein Air Movement with Nancy Tankersly

Artist Nicholas O'Leary won the Quick Draw his first time at Plein Air Easton in 2019 earning him an automatic entry into the following festival, but when COVID altered the landscape of international travel he found himself unable to cash in his award.  With a safer situation in 2022, Nicholas is finally returning to our competition.  Jess and Tim talk with Nicholas about his inspiration and his take on the Plein Air scene in Norway. Nicholas O’Leary (born in 1986 in Gisborne, New Zealand) has a degree in Architecture from the University of Auckland (2009). Since graduating he has lived and worked in Bergen, Norway, wher he can be found hiking in the mountains with his easel strapped to his backpack in often challenging conditions. He has painted since childhood and has studied under many artists, most notably with Odd Nerdrum in Norway. O’Leary works largely from life whereby the observation of previously unnoticed subtleties are prioritised. The recognition of which allow O’Leary to bend physical rules in his paintings and challenge our perceptions of truth and deception, reality and fantasy. The accululation and manipulation of observations is not limited by a specific subject matter. He paints across the board, and has won international prizes in portraiture, figurative paintings, larger imaginative compositions, landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes. Watercolor artist Thomas Bucci talks with Tim and Jess about his careers that led him to art and the era he grew up in that felt that careers in art were risky and not likely to succeed.  He proved them all wrong when he made more selling his architectural renderings than he did as an architect. "I’ve chosen watercolor for its ability to quickly suggest form with loose washes and to conjure the illusion of detail with crisp brushwork. I also love the gestural quality, capriciousness, and spontaneity of a transparent medium. The way I approach watercolor requires me to work quickly and I’m willing to take the risks associated with that to fully realize its potential." "I am always actively looking for ideas for paintings. Sometimes the scene serves up a ready painting idea and I just have to put it down on paper. More often ideas come from something less complete; a glimpse of atmospheric effects, the way sunlight lands on a surface, or an element in a landscape. The most important part of painting for me is not actually painting, but the mental preparation that I’m doing all the time, but I do paint at every opportunity. Small pencil or watercolor sketches are also a key part of my process." "I paint in the studio but I prefer to work from life and on location, drawing inspiration directly from a subject. However, I treat what I see in front of me as a suggestion that can be manipulated as needed. A painting is not bound by existing light conditions, actual colors, or physical elements. I often move, eliminate, and add things to make a composition. This is the real joy of painting for me. I feel a painting is successful when I envision the result first and then make that happen. Plein Air Easton alumnus Leonard Mizerek joins Tim and Marie to chat about his long history competing at Plein Air Easton, his recent move to Florida, and his painting trips abroad.  Leonard also talks about his approach to preparing his palette and how different painting surfaces impact his works. Leonard Mizerek Fellow, ASMA, nurtured his artistic love of nature while growing up and painting in the Brandywine Valley and countryside of nearby Pennsylvania. His early influence was with the Pennsylvania Impressionists and Brandywine School. Known for his colorful, luminous seascapes and expressive brushwork, Leonard paints on site deriving inspiration from the many nearby coastal locations as well as harbors throughout the world. A central theme throughout Leonard’s work is his use of light. In Mizerek’s words, “ Light alters the color of all objects and touches those nearby. It sets a mood and evokes emotion, which I strive to portray in my work. I often explore various methods to interpret the way I view nature. I prefer marine subjects because I enjoy the way water reflects the floating objects, as well as the sky and time of day. It mirrors shapes and intensifies light. I paint outdoors to capture the light first hand and bring out all its color and luminosity. Throughout the last few years, Leonard participated in several invitational Plein Air events including Mystic, Annapolis, winning Honorable Mention and Easton Md. winning Second Place in the Quick Draw event. He was featured painting live on TV France3 during a major antique boat festival. His painting was recently purchased by the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. Learning to See with Karl Terry

As an early curator at the Academy Art Museum, Henry Coe's artistic roots in Talbot County go back quite a ways.  Tim and Marie talked with Henry about his history as an artist and the evolutions of plein air art becoming a competition.   "I received a BA in English from Roanoke College and an MFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art. I began painting seriously on the eastern shore of Maryland while working as curator in Easton at The Academy of Arts and teaching at Chesapeake College. I was drawn to the low horizon and the big sky: a Dutch landscape quality of light reflected off of the water and back into the clouds. I spent seven months painting in China through a Maryland "sister state" relation with Anhui Province and accompanied a Maryland State Arts Council exhibit which included my work to Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan. I have done three artist's residencies in France and made many other painting visits there. Since 2016 I have participated in numerous plein air events, several times in Plein Air Easton. Over the years I have shown regularly in galleries in Chicago, Houston and Baltimore. I work in oils on a large and small scale and prefer to work en plein air as much as possible. I like to paint the lengthening shadows and lowering light that occur toward the end of day or the softer light of early morning. Ideally, I want my work to have a sense of light traveling through air in space. Having a palpable sense of air in a painting is important to me. The light and shadow define the mundane objects of a landscape I see as disappearing:  family farms or the "rural industrial" look that was once representative of many small towns. I have worked primarily in the Mid-Atlantic region, coastal Maine, Texas and western France." Plein Air artist Crista Pisano is known for her tiny paintings and big personality.  Tim and Jess ask Crista about her origins as a young ballerina, her job painting German Christmas ornaments, and her trademark yellow Jeep (which is really more of a butterscotch color).    Born and raised in northern New Jersey, Crista began painting in oils in 1989 under the instruction of John Phillip Osborne at the Ridgewood Art Institute in Ridgewood, NJ. She graduated from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in 2000, receiving a Bachelors Degree of fine arts painting, and in 2003, received a Masters Degree of Fine arts Painting from the New York Academy Graduate School of Figurative Art.   Crista paints landscapes mostly en plein air as well as in her studio in Nyack, NY, and is known for painting on a small scale. Influenced by the Hudson River School, she also loves the Macchiaioli, a group of Italian Painters active in Tuscany in the second half of the Nineteenth Century. Some of her favorite artists are George Inness, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Martin Johnson Heade, and Edward Lear. At the 2021 Plein Air Easton festival, Lon Brauer won the Judge's Choice award with his piece "Solitary Man".  In today's episode, Tim and Marie sit down with Lon to talk about his unique style, and Tim works on getting his name correct.   Lon Brauer is an American artist known for his work in figure and plein air landscape. He has a BFA from Washington University and an MFA from Fontbonne University – both in St. Louis, Missouri.   Born in 1955 Brauer's esthetic leans toward early 20th Century Realism as well as the Golden Age of illustration. This coupled with a sprinkling of Abstract Expressionism results in a mash up of the traditional and the avant guard. Consider it a salad of Eakins, Henri,  Wyeth, and DeKooning. Brauer’s work is firmly rooted in figurative themes with a strong emphasis on drawing. His subject matter ranges from the conceptual to the concrete. In his work he develops a strong foundation composition on which to hang the paint. He feels that painting should be primarily about the paint itself as it describe subject. The subject of a painting is only a part of the story. The way the paint is applied and manipulated speaks to the making of an image and drives the narrative - the emotional narrative. An Emotional Narrative with Lon Brauer

In the first episode of 2022, Tim and Jess sit down with Kim VanDerHoek about how she found success as a fine artist NOT by selling herself but rather by building relationships.   Kim VanDerHoek is an American contemporary fine artist who creates vibrant, textural oil paintings of landscapes and urban scenes in her Southern California studio.   Born in Southern California and raised in the mountains of Big Bear City, Kim spent many hours as a child climbing trees, sledding down snow-covered hills, horseback riding and hiking through the woods. Surrounded by the wild beauty of the forest Kim developed an early appreciation for the outdoors and a fascination for urban environments, which she continues to explore today through painting.   She learned to paint by painting en Plein Air because it combined her love of being outside, creating art and studying from life. “I enjoy the challenges Plein Air painting poses. Dealing with the weather, changing light and other hurdles of outdoor painting has forced me to to have a plan for each painting, to paint with commitment and to fearlessly experiment .” Kim feels that through Plein Air painting she has gained a better understanding of the effects of light and atmosphere. She aims to translate those effects into her studio paintings. Currently, she is working on a series of studio paintings featuring aerial views. In the first episode of 2022, Tim and Jess sit down with Kim VanDerHoek about how she found success as a fine artist NOT by selling herself but rather by building relationships. Kim VanDerHoek is an American contemporary fine artist who creates vibrant, textural oil paintings of landscapes and urban scenes in her Southern California studio. Born in Southern California and raised in the mountains of Big Bear City, Kim spent many hours as a child climbing trees, sledding down snow-covered hills, horseback riding and hiking through the woods. Surrounded by the wild beauty of the forest Kim developed an early appreciation for the outdoors and a fascination for urban environments, which she continues to explore today through painting. She learned to paint by painting en Plein Air because it combined her love of being outside, creating art and studying from life. “I enjoy the challenges Plein Air painting poses. Dealing with the weather, changing light and other hurdles of outdoor painting has forced me to to have a plan for each painting, to paint with commitment and to fearlessly experiment .” Kim feels that through Plein Air painting she has gained a better understanding of the effects of light and atmosphere. She aims to translate those effects into her studio paintings. Currently, she is working on a series of studio paintings featuring aerial views. A Spiritual Experience with John Brandon Sills

Relative newcomer to the Plein Air art circuit, Jeff Williams won 3rd Place in this year's Plein Air Easton festivities.  Jeff talks with Tim and Marie about how he transitioned from Architecture into painting and what he loves about his new career.   Jeff Williams is a retired professor of architecture from Oklahoma. He has won numerous major design competitions, including first prize in the coveted Paris Prize National Design Competition and honorable mention in the Van Alen International Design Competition, which provided opportunities to spend extensive time traveling throughout Europe, allowing him to experience diverse cultures and develop exceptional drawing skills.   Upon returning to the USA he practiced architecture in Minneapolis prior to relocating to Oklahoma to begin his teaching career with a focus on design. For thirty one years he taught design as well as led numerous student groups on summer European sketching excursions. Williams simultaneously maintained an award winning architectural design consulting practice which included commercial, public and private projects.   In 2017 he retired from teaching to pursue two of his passions, watercolor painting and travel. She discusses her process of developing her style and the challenges of tuning out the destructive thoughts that undermine our ambitions.   Growing up in beautiful Maryland farmland, Mary naturally drew inspiration from her surroundings. Spending time riding her horse through the striking abundance of the landscape instilled in her a strong sense of attachment and belonging. This inspired her to share her experience through artistic expression. Demonstrating a natural ability and interest from an early age her work began drawing awards and recognition. Mary went onto formal training at The Maryland Institute and College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. Her fine arts education continued with acclaimed landscape artists David Buckley Good, John Brandon Sills, and colorist Camille Przwodek. Her early influencers include Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, and William Merrit Chase, and remain evident in her work today.   In 1995, Mary began her art business as a professional artist and master craftsman painting murals, Trompe l’oeil, and faux finishes for residential and commercial clients throughout the Baltimore Washington area. Her extensive practice and training with both dimensionality of color and texture enriches the experience of her landscape paintings. In today's episode, plein air instructor Chris Kolupski joins us over Skype from the top of the Colorado National Monument.  Tim and Jess find out what led Chris to this beautiful (and seemingly treacherous) painting location and his philosophy on how best to develop your artistic skills.   Chris Kolupski began painting outdoors as a teenager in the forests of Upstate New York and Canada. After working as a freelance illustrator for five years in Rochester, Chris moved to New York City where he studied portraiture and figure painting at the Art Students League of New York. Instructors such as Nelson Shanks, Everett Raymond Kinstler and Dean Keller shaped Chris’s modern approach to painting from life. Chris continued his studies at Shanks’s Philadelphia painting school, Studio Incaminatti.   In 2004 Chris founded Boxart Street Atelier in Rochester, New York, where he taught drawing and painting for almost a decade. He continued teaching at Gallery 7 Studio, and currently teaches at Pittsford Fine Art. His Realist Painting Course is an intensive 24-month curriculum that teaches modern techniques for controlling hues, values and chroma, the three dimensions of color.    When painting indoor portraits, Chris prefers a subdued palette to help him capture subtle skin tones. When painting outdoors, the brilliant light pushes his palette to the widest range of color. He loves hiking and painting rugged landforms like the deep gorges of Upstate New York and the red rock of Colorado and Utah. “There is nothing like painting roaring waterfalls or sun baked badlands. Marciari-Alexander came to the Walters from the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) where she served from 2008 to 2013 as the Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs as well as periods in which she held the positions of Interim Co-Director (2009–2010) and Interim Deputy Director for Education (2010–2011). Prior to her work with SDMA, she spent more than ten years at the Yale Center for British Art, first as a curator and then as an Associate Director.   She earned her MA and PhD in History of Art at Yale University. She also received an MA in French Literature from New York University and a BA in Art History and French at Wellesley College. Marciari-Alexander is married to John Marciari, the Charles W. Engelhard Curator and Head of the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Morgan Library &amp; Museum in New York. Tim and Marie log in to Zoom so that the Plein Air Easton Podcast can continue despite the shutdown.  Today they talk to Plein Air Easton Alumnus artist Beth Bathe.  They discuss her art career and how the Coronavirus has impacted her work and the industry as a whole.   *As this episode was recorded over Zoom, the sound quality is lower than usual.   Beth’s painting style is unique, looking somewhat like a watercolor, or is it an oil painting? She uses Cobra Water Mixable Oil Colors in thin washes with a limited tonalist palette, using unconventional tools such as squeegees and qtips along with her brushes. Her representational paintings have been described by critics as evoking nostalgia, like that of an old sepia toned photograph, often with just touches of color.   She is highly influenced by painter Andrew Wyeth, and her subject matter is often what she refers to as the "vanishing landscape", including finding beauty in buildings, barns and old towns of a time gone by and often beyond their prime. Old barns, a Victorian farmhouse, a back alley, a fire escape, an old mill, or an old split rail fence down a country road are common subjects. Beth paints primary on location to catch her subject at a specific time, especially how the light and shadows play on the surface create drama and emotion. In the studio today is Jill Basham, a local plein air painter.  She discusses how she got into painting, her approach, and how she deals with fear and the inevitable failures that are part of the artistic process.   "I am overwhelmed by the beauty of nature, in particular the atmosphere of an environment. Atmosphere is revealed by how the light strikes objects, both natural and manmade. I particularly enjoy the mood of skies and expansive views. Inspiration can arrive anywhere, from a bustling street in Manhattan to an isolated marsh. It's the "feeling" of the place that inspires me, and I hope to translate. When painting a scene, I don't have specific rules for myself. I prefer to let a scene and my feelings for it, set my approach. Palette knives, brushes, household items and hardware store finds have all been used in moving paint onto and around my canvases. I see each painting as an experiment that is unfolding. My initial goal can be interrupted by a new idea during the process, and I'm okay with taking a different path and veering from what might have been comfortable. Of course, there are risks with this, the fear of "failure", and quite possibly a painting that needs to be wiped off...yet that's okay with me. It's the safe paintings that I find less exciting. The truly moving pieces are the ones that I pushed a bit. There are stories to tell. I strive to get my paintings to a point to which I "feel" the place I have painted, and hope others do as well. I find expression comes easiest for me with a paintbrush in hand, much easier than speaking. My hope is that others see and feel the stories I'm telling." Framing America's Future with Pat McDaniel

In today's episode, Tim and Marie (with some nosy intrusion from producer Nick Richards) talk to friend and plein air artist Jay Brooks.  Jay discusses his experience at Cape Ann Plein Air and Plein Air Easton, the challenges and surprises of participating in intense painting competitions, and how his art style has evolved since getting back out of the studio.   Growing up on 90 acres of farmland in Pavilion NY, Jay Brooks has always had the landscape as an integral part of his life and art. At the young age of 14, Brooks began painting under the classical apprenticeship of John Piesley and the plain - aire instruction of Charles Movalli, a disciple of the late Emile Gruppe. Brooks was also introduced to the pre-impressionist styles of Corot, George Inness and Asher B. Durand. In 1988, Brooks received his B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University and in 1990 he received his M.F.A. from Columbia University. Being removed from his familiar bucolic surroundings, Brooks studied and painted the industrial environments of Pittsburgh and New York City. After teaching art in New York City, Brooks moved back to upstate NY in 1993. Here, Brooks is surrounded by countless varieties of scenes from around the northeastern US. In today's episode, Tim and Marie (with some nosy intrusion from producer Nick Richards) talk to friend and plein air artist Jay Brooks.  Jay discusses his experience at Cape Ann Plein Air and Plein Air Easton, the challenges and surprises of participating in intense painting competitions, and how his art style has evolved since getting back out of the studio. Growing up on 90 acres of farmland in Pavilion NY, Jay Brooks has always had the landscape as an integral part of his life and art. At the young age of 14, Brooks began painting under the classical apprenticeship of John Piesley and the plain - aire instruction of Charles Movalli, a disciple of the late Emile Gruppe. Brooks was also introduced to the pre-impressionist styles of Corot, George Inness and Asher B. Durand. In 1988, Brooks received his B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University and in 1990 he received his M.F.A. from Columbia University. Being removed from his familiar bucolic surroundings, Brooks studied and painted the industrial environments of Pittsburgh and New York City. After teaching art in New York City, Brooks moved back to upstate NY in 1993. Here, Brooks is surrounded by countless varieties of scenes from around the northeastern US.
