As humans, we tend to have a problem asking for help. We can chalk that up to our proud hearts. Often, when we are really up against it, that’s when we resist seeking help.   The God of the universe does away with all that.   Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”   Ask yourself: is my pride keeping me from asking for help? If so, mull that over. And then, take a step toward the Lord and ask for what you need.    God opens doors when we ask Him to. Sometimes what we find on the other side isn’t what we expected. And when that happens, we choose patience, and we remain open to His good plans for us.    When you’ve asked God to help and your prayers are answered, share the Good News with the people you meet. Tell anyone who will listen that the Lord of the Universe cared about you, and delivered you from a problem no one else could solve.   And if the answer He gave was totally unexpected and sent you in a different direction—share that, too! Accepting God’s plan when it doesn’t match up with our own best laid plans is what faith is all about.    Let’s pray.    Lord, please give us a heart that seeks you. God, we want to be obedient. And we know that your blessings, whatever they look like, will follow. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Help Wanted

Lay It Down

It’s a mysterious journey, but the fog lifts and the way becomes clear when we get to know King Jesus.   Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”   You were made for something! You were made to do things for your Lord. And the truly beautiful thing is, God created a custom plan just for you. If you aren’t a famous athlete like Tim Tebow, you can still share your faith in wonderful ways. Ways that are life-changing for those you encounter.   Think of that verse again. God made you for a purpose! Created to have the mind of Christ in making this world a better place and making disciples for Him. And God prepared it long, long ago.    You are His child. That’s who you are.   Let’s pray.   Lord, when we begin to understand even a little bit of your love for us, it transforms us and it renews our minds and our hearts. Thank you so much for that! Anita’s life was like that, growing up in Hong Kong where revolutionary movements brought violence and loss of hope. She couldn’t see how the pieces of her life could be put together. She would ask herself, “How do you make peace with a potential that is frustrated?”   Philippians 4:19 says, “But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”   Over time, Anita saw that God had always been shaping her to find her calling in Christ. She did that, and today operates a ministry that helps women see that they are daughters of the Living God! Truly, Anita didn’t always have it together, but her life is living proof that God puts us back together for His purposes.   Let’s pray.    Lord, someone listening needs a dramatic move from you in their life. God, please bring your peace and comfort to them today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

God is Shaping Your Life

Have you ever noticed how much we love ritual and form as part of religion? We become so good at it, so obsessed with it, that we lose sight of the essence of what it means to be a Christian.   To know God.   That is the primary purpose of our journey, and it will be the end of our journey. It is so foundational to who we are as humans that even the great Moses basically begged God to let him see Him. So close were they that according to Jewish tradition, when Moses died, God drew his spirit from him with a kiss.   Isaiah 5:19 says, “Let Him make speed, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it; And let the purpose of the Holy One of Israel draw near And come to pass, that we may know it!”   The Bible is clear that we can know God. As individuals, we can have a personal relationship with Him, the very One who created all there is.   The splendor of that reality should drive us to read His Word and pray to Him every day. It should be the longing of our hearts. He knows, and He welcomes us into His presence.   Let’s pray.   Lord, your mercy in making yourself available to us is something we can’t even fully understand in this life. But we thank you for it, and love you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Purpose of Our Journey

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci is widely looked upon as the most famous painting in the world.   By some historical estimates, the Mona Lisa took as many as 16 years to finish! Capturing Mona Lisa’s famous smile on a poplar plank was no hack job; Leonardo accepted a commission for the work in the year 1503, and completed his masterpiece supposedly around the time of his death in 1519. Clearly, this level of artistic achievement takes time.   When you hear the word “masterpiece,” what do you think of?   A famous painting? A beautiful building maybe? Your child’s latest artwork?   What about a giant sequoia tree? A symphony? A pink flamingo? The intricate, miraculous design of the human heart?   Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”   Before you were even born, God knew you, and He had a plan for your life. He created you for a purpose, and He considers you one of his personal works of art. You are a living, breathing miracle capable of wonderful things—God’s own masterpiece.   Let’s pray.   God, we thank you and praise you that in all of creation, you have chosen to make us in your image, and to fashion us as a masterpiece—a work of art designed with care. Help us to be worthy of your effort. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Do you struggle to wonder what God’s will is for your life?   Many of us do.   Although it isn’t a quick answer, the best way to find God’s will for your life is to read His Word. The Bible will tell you the answer to that question.   Romans 8:31 tells us, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”   Actually, finding God’s will isn’t the hardest part. Deciding to follow His will is where we get tripped up.   People need the skill and the discipline of being persistent. Too often the impulse is to give up and then, if we’re honest, pretend that God hasn’t revealed His will to us.   Good old Abe Lincoln had it right when he said that the only important response is to make sure we are on God’s side, not whether He’s on ours.   God has already told us that He’s on our side. He sent His Son, Jesus, to take the penalty for our sin. It doesn’t get any more “on our side” than that.    Change your thinking a bit. Don’t focus on what you think God is supposed to do. Resolve instead to follow God, and to do it every day.   Let’s pray.   Lord, your will is the thing that drives us on, to find our purpose in this life. Thank you for sticking with us. Help us to stick with you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

It seems that a positive in our culture today is that we can admit our shortcomings.    In the past, it was sort of taboo to tell the world you were not exactly all put together. Back in the day, a hot mess usually referred to an overturned pot on the stove. But today we know the phrase ‘hot mess’ as a whole new meaning, and our lives are often exactly that.    Thank goodness that the outcome is not dependent on us.    Ephesians 2:8 says, “For it is by grace. You have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves. It is the gift of God.”   Recognizing that you don’t quite have it together is a positive first step to moving beyond your circumstances. But the real key is internalizing the fact that God, and not you, saves the day. All we can do is admit our shortcomings, and then rest in the knowledge that God has it from here, and that’s an attitude the Lord will bless. God’s got you covered and blessed all at the same time.    Let’s pray.    Lord, you are so good to us, and you have been so much more for us than we can even imagine. Thank you for blessing us, for not leaving us where we were. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Bible tells us that King Solomon was a very wise man. He ruled over his kingdom from Jerusalem, and built the famous Temple there.   He was also very human.   This son of King David eventually let his wealth and power go to his head, and he began to follow other religions and almost seemed to enjoy sinning. And yet God loved him.    In his later years, Solomon realized how wrong he had been to rely on his own spiritual strength. And so scholars believe that’s where the book of Proverbs was born. They come from a man weary of the cares of this life. A man ashamed of the mistakes he had made.   Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”   Proverbs is packed with amazing wisdom into right living, after perhaps one has been focused on other kinds of living.     Solomon learned the hard lessons as he found his way back to a forgiving God whose mercies are eternal. That is a good lesson for us.   Let’s pray.   Lord, your patience with us is humbling, and it is so appreciated. We thank you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A lot of us like action movies. And if they have a faith theme or element, even better. The iconic film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” comes to mind. In fact, the wild ride taken by Indiana Jones really typifies what we’re talking about this week: finding the grit to move beyond failure.   As he pursues the famous Ark of the Covenant, Jones chases and fights Nazis, and his own doubts. Along the way, his physical and mental stamina are challenged like never before.   Romans 5:3–4 says, “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”   In a sense, Indiana was sorting out his faith, too, as he looked for the most famous relic of all time. For sure, in the end, he had enough evidence to believe in the God of the Bible.   That’s kind of the way faith is. We look at it with skepticism. Sometimes for years! But then something happens to us that we can’t explain. Then we turn a corner on the street and there He is: Jesus.   If you are wrestling with your faith, stop and go back to the source: think on who Jesus really is. Your Savior. Your path to glory will be worth it all!   Let’s pray. Lord, our journey to faith is not always smooth and straight. Thank you for sticking with us to the end. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Let’s just get to it. For the first time in any of our lifetimes, the whole world is facing a common enemy. One that threatens our way of life. But it’s not a dangerous person, or a hostile nation. It’s a virus. Literally overnight, we might be faced with disruptions in our lives that no one has experienced before. It all seems to have come from nowhere. Fear is cropping up everywhere. It matters a lot how each of us faces that fear. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Such a beautiful verse. Did you notice that…God has given us a sound mind? A sound mind. Even the words are comforting, those three words. During tough times, God made you to stand. You can’t control a lot, but you can be calm and a help to others. Think about people from the past that stood calmly during incredibly difficult moments. They learned from life that scary things can be overcome and you can go on to thrive, not just survive. In this time of uncertainty, you can be certain that God’s Word is true. It always has been, for past generations, a thousand times over. Believe what God told you. Trade your fear for fierceness in the face of an enemy. Let’s pray. Lord, our world gives us moments of decision. We will keep our eyes focused on you, no matter what! Amen.

Kerusso Daily Devotional - Forgiveness [2 of 5]: Is There Someone in Your Life You Need to Forgive?

Have you ever gotten so tired of life that you wished you could disappear and start over somewhere else? Ever wish that fantasy would just pull you out of your circumstances? They make movies about things like that, but it’s not real. John 14:2,3 says, “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” How incredible that Jesus is actually going to do this for us someday. If you live long enough, the cares of life sort of wear you down and you need a good, long rest. Good for us that our Lord cares enough for us that He has already gone ahead to prepare a place of peace, rest, and joy for each of us. It will be a real place, not just scouting a location for a film. One day, in His perfect time, He will call you out of this groaning world. He will take you to a spot that has literally been prepared with just you in mind! You’ll be home. Let’s pray. Lord, you are good to us in countless ways. We thank you so much for the heavenly home you have prepared for us. Amen.

Have you ever gotten so tired of life that you wished you could disappear and start over somewhere else? Ever wish that fantasy would just pull you out of your circumstances? They make movies about things like that, but it’s not real. John 14:2,3 says, “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” How incredible that Jesus is actually going to do this for us someday. If you live long enough, the cares of life sort of wear you down and you need a good, long rest. Good for us that our Lord cares enough for us that He has already gone ahead to prepare a place of peace, rest, and joy for each of us. It will be a real place, not just scouting a location for a film. One day, in His perfect time, He will call you out of this groaning world. He will take you to a spot that has literally been prepared with just you in mind! You’ll be home. Let’s pray. Lord, you are good to us in countless ways. We thank you so much for the heavenly home you have prepared for us. Amen.

Billy Joel says that his hit song, “Pressure” really is about the pressures of daily life: providing for your family, putting food on the table, and career obstacles. Even the way he sings the song, with power and anger, makes the point. It’s quite a statement on life. And we’ve all felt it. 2 Corinthians 1:8 says, “We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.” But as believers, we can take heart in the fact that Paul then writes that difficulties happen in life so that we will rely only on God. The apostle reminds us that God has delivered us from desperate times, and will again. What a powerful promise! The pressures of life sometimes come suddenly, leaving us off-balance and fearful. When that happens, remind yourself of the promises of God’s Word. He knows where you are and where you’re going. He’ll be waiting for you when you get there. Let’s pray. Lord, sometimes we feel like we’re going to explode. We thank you that you never abandon us, and are always ready to protect us and preserve us. Amen.

From the time he was a young shepherd in the wilderness, David had deep relationship with God. He escaped enough dangerous situations to know that God was always with Him and was his deliverer. Psalm 91:1,2 says, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” This psalm is famous for its descriptive language. We can see a picture of this in our minds. And the specific things listed in this passage are very personal for each of us. We are not to fear. When we call on Him, He hears. His angels watch over us. One of the most beautiful images in the Bible is found in this psalm, as God, like a strong eagle, covers us with his wings so that we are protected. Remember the words of Psalm 91 and call on Him day or night. Let’s pray. Lord, your protection for us is just one of the things that separates you from anyone or anything else. We are grateful for your wings that draw us near and cover us. Amen.

Today in America, two million men and women serve in our armed forces. More than 200,000 of them are deployed to various points around the world. Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” The Lord has told us directly not to be afraid. We aren’t even to be discouraged! He’s told us through His promises that He’ll be with us every step of the way. If we stop and think about the amazing history of this country, we can see that God has literally been with us every minute of every hour. He was at Yorktown. He dropped a last-minute winning strategy into Chamberlain’s mind at Gettysburg. God went with our invasion forces in the Pacific and in Europe during World War 2, because people were enslaved and in need of rescue. He has been with us since the terrible moments of 9/11. Be strong and of good courage in the Land of the Free! Let’s pray. Lord, your provision for us in all times and places is wonderful. Thank you for never leaving us. Amen. A really cool thing about God is that He has a solution for literally every situation. That includes mental health. We see this especially in the ministry of Jesus, who walked the land healing people of all sorts of terrible things. One day He encountered a man driven insane by demons. Mark 5:15 says, “They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the ‘legion’; and they became frightened.” The “Legion,” those who possessed this man’s mind, were no match for Jesus, who simply commanded them to leave the man in peace. They did! Now, not every mental health problem is related to possession. But mental illness is so devastating to the patient, and family and friends, that it often feels like evil lives here. Not so in the peaceful kingdom of our Lord. If you or a loved one struggles with mental issues, ask the Lord to help you. He has done it many times. Than man with the peaceful face and clear mind all those years ago is proof of that. Let’s pray. Lord, you own the universe and can solve any problem. Please especially today be with those afflicted by mental illness. Come to them and comfort them and heal them. Amen.

We all want to feel secure. We can look fine on the outside, but be something much less on the inside. And the first step to overcoming vulnerability is to feel okay with who we are. Psalm 62:5-6 says, “Only God gives inward peace, and I depend on Him. God alone is the mighty rock that keeps me safe, and he is the fortress where I feel secure.” The tension comes when we balance healthy self-esteem with our sin-nature. Can we feel good about ourselves while recognizing the need for a Savior? The answer is, yes we can. In fact, Jesus flat-out loves us, and values us so much that He came to Earth to pay the penalty for our sin. Modern psychology might get it wrong sometimes, but recognizes that humans must overcome shame and self-doubt in order to thrive. Jesus knew that all along. What does the Word say? “God gives us inward peace.” That is the essence of healthy self-esteem. Let’s pray. Lord, I don’t want to get too full of myself. I also know that I can see me they way you see me, worthy of your love for all time. Amen.

Most amazing, He is today alive. He was crucified and laid in a tomb 2,000 years ago, but rose again and lives to be the King of our lives. As the Word, He is aware of literally everything, including our thoughts. He hears the cry of your heart. He knows when you are depressed. He knows your thoughts and how you feel about things. If He does all that, why not talk to Him today? Tell Jesus how you feel. His story isn’t just words on a page. He is the Living Word. Let’s pray. Lord, your mercy and grace for us are incredible! But it had not only taken her far from home, it took her away from the values she had known. This new place she lived in pressed-in on her mind and heart. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” Burdened by her stresses, Jill realized something had to change. But in that unique way He has, God showed her that she didn’t necessarily have to move home, or even change careers. What she needed to do was continually give her burdens to Jesus. She did that and one day, months later, she realized with great joy that she had at some point come back to her place of peace. And her parents and loved ones were still several states away!
