The series continues by looking at how Jesus handles temptation when Satan returns. "One of the principal patterns across all the gospels is the demand for a sign that comes from the Jews. It’s a little out of our cultural world, and let me just explain. You’ll see examples in the Talmud about great rabbis doing a sign, and what it is is a miracle that shows you off. It might be a miracle where you make the roof go up two feet and come down. It has nothing to do with love."  "The very nature of a sign is to separate love from power. That’s the problem with celebrity culture in the church. It separates love from power. Love always involves humility and going lower."  "In all these temptations, Satan is tempting Jesus to act on his own, but Jesus says, 'I do nothing on my own. I do just what I see my Father doing.' So, for me, that means asking others' opinions, staying under authority, being content with the rhythms of life that God’s given me. We’ve talked about being content in the garden that God has given. So many besetting sins involve looking outside of the garden God’s put you in. They're all a way of making bread."

If you think of the last 3 vignettes where we’ve seen Mary at work, the biggest difference between this one and those other scenes is that here, Mary is doing nothing. Each one of those scenes was a situation out of control, and we saw Mary coming in and exerting some form of control."  "Mary always initiated, and now, she’s silent and Jesus initiates towards her. Jesus, as the eldest son, cares for her retirement and physical well-being and asks John to take care of her."  "In Acts 1, we see Mary mentioned with the other disciples praying in the Upper Room. So there’s this beautiful blending now of the family of Mary and the Jesus family. You see this all over the world: families become the most whole when Jesus enters in."

25 years ago, my husband and I were deeply impacted and changed by and through the Sonship seminars and material. Through the years we have read all of Jack and Rose Marie Miller’s books with much profit. But until this podcast we had not had opportunity to hear Paul Miller Teach his new material on Jesus. This podcast has come at a perfect time of deep trial and need for spiritual refreshment. It has benefited us very much.  Thank you for this ministry.

I went through the first 5 See Jesus J-curve episodes on a solitary road trip and not only fell more deeply in love with Jesus’s embodiment of the whole Trinity’s attentiveness, compassion, and how that moves God to action, but was deeply convicted by my own failure to be like Him. The more I reflected, the more I fell in love with Jesus, and all that He has done for me and that He actually lives in me now and that I have constant access to Him, which makes me want to pray and love all the more.

I am now going through a second time to listen more attentively and look forward to reading the Gospels and all of God’s Word and spending time with people with more attentiveness, compassion, and action.

I am so thankful for God’s work in Paul Miller and moving him to write and teach as he has. I also recommend A Loving Life and A Praying Life— both the books and the studies. I now want to do the J-curve Study!

[J-CURVE: Union with Christ] 1. "I'll Never Do This Again!": How the J-Curve Helps

This episode explores the idea that gift-giving is deep in the structure of the universe... reflecting the heart of our gift-giving God.  “You’re driving in heavy traffic, and someone coming from the opposite direction wants to make a left-hand turn in front of you. To let them do that might cost you missing a traffic light. You can see from their turn signal that they are requesting a gift. And, in most cases, what do you do? You give them a gift of time. They wave their acknowledgement and you nod in exchange. Achilles in the Iliad is swift; he is swift Achilles. Everything he does is swift. Erich Auerbach* compares that to Jacob. If you look at Jacob, in the first part of his life he’s just a scoundrel. He’s crafty. If he was in the Iliad, he would be crafty Jacob. But, as Robert Alter* puts it, Jacob, like so many other Bible characters is a 'center of surprise.' Jacob actually changes.”  “Emotions made Stoics nervous. If you've been in an argument lately, you know why."  “The Jewish love of the physical meant that they could affirm Jesus’ humanity but not his divinity. The Greek mind was the inverse of this. Jesus’ divinity was easy for the Greeks to see; it was his humanity that they struggled with. In the fake gospel of Judas, Judas—because he loves Jesus—gives Jesus over to be crucified so Jesus can be rid of his body. Becoming like Jesus is not the dissolution of those lesser loves, but them rightly ordered."  "My imagination was captured by the idea that I wanted Emily to be in Jesus. I knew that the way to become in Jesus was to travel his journey and out of that would come resurrection. And it worked! It’s so powerful! It was an imaginative vision of the beauty of Jesus coming into my family that had been mastering me for some 20 years."

It also includes glory and rejoicing. So, when your favorite sports team wins, you glory in that sports team. The concept gets right at the heart of how our flesh operates."  “When I was silent in that meeting, it put to death something evil in me – my boasting self. I felt the pain of that."  "A lot of people are quiet – they don’t boast – but Paul is not so much talking about what you say, but about the boasting self. If you are critical, that’s a form of boasting. You’re bringing someone down. Gossip is the boasting self. You’re sharing information about someone else that quietly lifts you up. So many of our sins rotate around this desire to move up the failure-boasting chart!"

And it's not in my situation. So it allows me to have this calm center in all kinds of circumstances."

The answer in Romans 6 to the problem of selfishness and the Christian life is that our union with Christ is an embodiment in which we continually reenact His life of love, and that leads to suffering and a life of repentance."
