Liam Sharp

I was able to meet up in person with Liam Sharp while he is Vancouver for a local comics show. I have always been really into his work and fascinated by his approach. He’s currently the artist on Green Lantern with writer Grant Morrison. His most recent work includes Brave and the Bold Wonder Woman/Batman which he wrote, and the Wonder Woman work with writer Greg Rucka.

Los Angeles’ CALA is about to hold their fifth annual event, and guest ‘stud Kit Brash talked to two of the team behind it, Jen Wang and Jake Mumm, a couple of weeks after last year’s show. This year’s CALA will run on December 8th and 9th, from 10am til 5pm each day. Guests will include Taneka Stotts, Sophia Foster-Dimino, Marinaomi, Laura Lannes, Cathy G. The venue, a gymnasium at 3000 Dolores St in Glendale, has that common LA curse of being five times quicker by car than by public transport, but there’s parking onsite and in surrounding streets, with a food truck and tables to save precious table-browsing time. Last year I joined the board of Directors for the Vancouver Comic Art Festival. It’s been really fun getting more involved in supporting local events and comics happening. The first event we did outside of the regular festival, was this talk with Anna Haifisch, Olivier Schrauwen and Marian Churchland. We did the event in the new theatre in the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library. Many thanks to Fantagraphics for facilitating the visit from Anna and Olivier and to the VPL for hosting.

I was very excited to talk to Patrick about his comics, and as you can tell, we cover a lot of material. Inkstuds on the Road – Part 7 Rebecca Sugar

While at the CXC comics show in Columbus, I did a couple of interviews in these weird little pod study rooms just off of the festival floor. It was very convenient to have and easy to use. My first interview was with Sean T Collins. Sean has been involved comics criticism since the early 2000’s. He has been on the inkstuds before for a critics roundtable many years. I don’t see Sean very often, but I thought since we would be at the same show, it would be a good chance to catch up. Sean has stepped away from directly focusing comics criticism to the greener pastures of tv show reviewing for many high profile entertain sites. He recently he posted a list of 33 favorite graphic novels for the Thrillist. Sean’s next upcoming comics related project is Mirror Mirror 2 from 2d Cloud. An anthology that he is co-editing with Julia Gfrörer. The contributor list is aces and I am really looking forward to checking it out when it comes out in the new year. To end our trip in New York City, Brandon and I traveled across Brooklyn to the home of Gary Panter. We were joined by the our touring friends, Simon Hanselmann, Michael Deforge and Patrick Kyle. We thought it would be fun to bring together some amazing talent, a bunch of young cartoonists heavily influenced by one man, our host Gary.  It was a really delightful afternoon. Gary has been on the show before and is one of the great conversationalists in comics. He continues to move forward in his work, trying new things and taking on new challenges. His latest work is Dal Tokyo from Fantagraphics. It was probably the best way to end our NYC leg of the roadtrip.

Ninja Turtles co-creator and Heavy Metal bigwig joined me to discuss a range of different comics topics. He has recently returned to drawing the green guys that made him famous and is celebrating the 35th anniversary of Heavy Metal publishing in the North American market. I was a huge Ninja Turtle fan as a kid and lately, I have been reading a lot of Heavy Metal editions of translated European work. I thank anyone that is able to publish Druillet in the North American market!

Marc Bell

Marc Bell joined me, Brandon and local cartoonist, Owen Plummer, to talk about his new book from Drawn and Quarterly, Stroppy. For me, Marc is one of the most important Canadian cartoonists with his work pushing different ideas around storytelling, style and more. His new book is his first long form work and a return  to comics after an extended period focusing on his fine like the work in Hot Potatoe. Marc has also been promoting lesser known Canadian cartoonists like Mark Connery and Joe Hale and the wonderful Nog A Dod anthology. All fantastic comics.
