Hi I'm Doug Field, the CEO of the vibrant and dynamic East of England Co-op, a co-operative society that has thrived for over 150 years and continues to grow with passion and purpose. What sets our Society apart is our unwavering commitment to our members—over 280,000 strong—who are the lifeblood of our co-operative. We take immense pride in being the largest independent retail business in East Anglia, with a remarkable presence spanning more than 200 trading outlets across 70 diverse towns and villages in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex. As the CEO, I am entrusted with safeguarding and nurturing the legacy of our members, ensuring their interests are protected for generations to come. Previously I was Chair of the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership and am a Trustee of the esteemed Green Light Trust. I work to support and uplift local businesses and charitable causes. Before moving to East Anglia my career included four years at Christie Group plc as Group Financial Controller and six years at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Bristol. Away from the professional realm, I find great joy and inspiration in the adventures that parenthood brings. My three school-age children keep me on my toes and fuel my imagination. Sports also hold a special place in my heart—I relish witnessing the successes (and failures) of my hometown sports teams, from Hull City's promotion to the Premier League to Hull FC's victorious rugby league Challenge Cup win in Cardiff.His Top TipAsk questions - Asking questions is a great way to get the most out of our lives and businesses. This was very special for me to have a US Naval Aviator who was trained at the same bases as my father had trained at, and who had flown F14 Tomcats at the Top Gun school, while Tom Cruise was filming, and then going on to come on the USS Nimitz before his current career in Boeing.Mike Manazir served 36 years in the U.S. Navy and retired in 2017 as a Rear Admiral (Upper Half). As a naval aviator, Mike was qualified in the F-14 and the F-18 aircraft, flying 3750 fighter hours and conducting 1240 arrested landings during fifteen overseas deployments aboard aircraft carriers. A graduate of TOPGUN, Mike commanded a fighter squadron, two ships including the aircraft carrier USS NIMITZ, and a carrier strike group. Mike also completed five tours in the Pentagon. Following retirement from the Navy, Mike accepted a position with The Boeing Company where he conducts liaison between the U.S. Navy and Boeing.Mike has been married to Kelly for 41 years. They have two grown children.Mike has published Learn How to Lead to Win; 33 Powerful Stories and Leadership Lessons in which he describes his own leadership journey through his Navy experience. His stories are applicable in civilian organizations and pursuits as much as in the military. Having joined JCW, the recruitment arm of Search Cap, in 2009 fresh out of university the last 15 years have been busy for Et who has seen the organization grow from 3 people in a small office in London to over 300 team members spread across 6 countries, 8 brands, 5 sectors and annual revenue in excess of £60 Million pounds An unusual mix of experience, Et has bounced between back and front office throughout his career responding to whatever the the organization needed as it moved through its start up phase. He started his first online tyre business two years later, in 1995, after being made redundant. He subsequently sold that business to UK fast-fit chain Kwik Fit, where he was hired as the group’s first head of e-commerce in the lead-up to Ford’s £1 billion acquisition in 1999. Karuna has been a leadership journeyman for a long time. Over nearly four decades of work and lived experiences, he has studied, observed, led, suffered, been mentored, and gained much from simply observing and learning from both amazing, and unfortunately, appalling leaders. His leadership journey began quite by accident at 19 at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, undoubtedly one of the finest leadership training institutions in the world. Over a year, his first conceptions of leadership were uprooted against the time-honoured traditions of the seafarer. For good reason, as the sea has always been and remains a harsh punisher of poor leadership and judgement. He went on to gain his sea legs working with ship-crews, and leading small numbers of highly capable and well-trained men and women. During his time in the Navy he also lived in Sweden, Australia and the United States, training with other navy men and women, and in the process learning how others chose to lead. He capped 19 years in the Navy in Singapore with two consecutive warship commands over six years, a 45-meter minehunter with 38-crew, and a 150-meter landing ship tank with 120 crew. Leaving the Navy after successful command at sea as the pioneer crew of the Landing Ship Tank was a forced choice. Karuna chose to prioritise his life at that stage to be a father to his two children, and a better version of himself to his wife, who had earlier already given up her career to stay home with the young son and daughter. Leaders make choices, and commit to those choices, and often find themselves in difficult trade-offs.Karuna again found himself another accidental opportunity in the newly created military leadership centre, where he spent a decade as part of the pioneer team to transform military culture through the development of leaders and values work. He successfully retired after three decades in the military, and went on to work for three years as the Singapore Government’s Senior Organisational Development Consultant. His work with Brunei Government leaders was acknowledged by the World Bank in 2016.Over the past 6 years, Karuna has coached and worked closely with Senior Leaders, organisational leadership teams, and middle managers to help them grow into the leaders they need to be. His success rate at supporting organisational transformation is evident from repeat client requests for his support.Karuna is a firm believer in RESPECT as the Core Value for Organisational Leaders. Inspiring Leadership with Jonathan Bowman-Perks MBE

Richard Fenning is a Senior Adviser at risk consultancy. He advises a number of the firm’s long-standing clients and provides counsel to the firm’s leadership. He joined Control Risks in 1993 and was CEO from 2005 until 2019, when he was succeeded by Nick Allan. During his tenure as CEO, Richard oversaw the significant growth of Control Risks’ business, a substantial increase in the firm’s geographic footprint and a comprehensive enlargement of the range of services provided to an increasingly diverse global client base.In 2016 Richard led the firm through a complex and successful management buy-out, establishing Control Risks as a corporate partnership and ensuring the on-going independence of the firm. He is a regular speaker and media commentator on geo-politics, international security and risk issues.Prior to being appointed CEO, he was chief operating officer and head of the firm’s New York office. He now divides his time between Singapore and London.Richard has an honours degree in Modern History from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and in 2004 attended the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD business school in France. Richard is now building his skills as a Leadership Coach. He spoke of growing up in the 1960s in Doncaster, Yorkshire. His parents were both from working class backgrounds and instilled in him clear values of hard work and self-reliance. His father served in a Lancaster crew in Bomber Command during World war two while still in his late teens although he rarely talked about it. This experience in part gave him the determination to build a successful family business. Richard has deliberately not tried to emulate his father’s tough, uncompromising management style! Richard joined Control Risks in the early drawn by a clear fascination with how geo-politics and security impact international business. This has afforded him a fascinating insight into how senior executives approach risk: some are over cautious, others reckless while a find that right balance between sensible prudence and bold ambition.  We spoke of Brexit and the mood in the world. In particular, the lack of inspiring political leadership and why politics is now such an unappealing career. But Richard is optimistic about the next generation of leaders in business military, civil and voluntary sector – people of exceptional quality . The environmental movement suggests that there is no absence of leadership among the  younger generation with their vision and determination. We talked about inspiring Leaders –in particular Richard’s friend Roelf Meyer, one of the architects along with now South African President  Cyril Ramaphosa of post-Apartheid South Africa. Roelf is a clear example of both clear political vison and personal moral courage. In the business world, the job of CEO was to lead from behind in good times and let others step forward. But when things don’t go so well, then you need to lead from the front  As CEO running a consultancy or professional services firm – you are acutely aware that your people are your product. Your brand and reputation relies on the quality of thousands of human interactions all over the world every single day.  And you are hiring people often not for their general business skills but for very specific individual expertise. You need to recognise that deploying this expertise is what fundamentally motivates them. They may be interested in the overall success of the firm but this is not their primary motivation. And high degrees of expertise are often accompanied by quirky personality traits!  The best example of someone who can lead a team of highly talented individuals, working against the odds as a very successful team over a very sustained period of time is Mick Jagger – not an obvious example but worth thinking about! The biggest danger to success is the myth of the super-human- CEO who can single-handedly transform huge organisations – its profoundly wrong and they can’t. CEOs who have started to believe their own cultish propaganda  should be on the top right hand corner of any risk register.  Richard’s next phase will be as a coach to senior executives honing his ability to listen with purpose mindful of the investment banking executive who remarked: “We don’t listen around here, we just reload!” Hosted on Acast. Richard Fenning is a Senior Adviser at risk consultancy. He advises a number of the firm’s long-standing clients and provides counsel to the firm’s leadership. He joined Control Risks in 1993 and was CEO from 2005 until 2019, when he was succeeded by Nick Allan. During his tenure as CEO, Richard oversaw the significant growth of Control Risks’ business, a substantial increase in the firm’s geographic footprint and a comprehensive enlargement of the range of services provided to an increasingly diverse global client base.In 2016 Richard led the firm through a complex and successful management buy-out, establishing Control Risks as a corporate partnership and ensuring the on-going independence of the firm. He is a regular speaker and media commentator on geo-politics, international security and risk issues.Prior to being appointed CEO, he was chief operating officer and head of the firm’s New York office. He now divides his time between Singapore and London.Richard has an honours degree in Modern History from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and in 2004 attended the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD business school in France. Richard is now building his skills as a Leadership Coach. He spoke of growing up in the 1960s in Doncaster, Yorkshire. His parents were both from working class backgrounds and instilled in him clear values of hard work and self-reliance. His father served in a Lancaster crew in Bomber Command during World war two while still in his late teens although he rarely talked about it. This experience in part gave him the determination to build a successful family business. Richard has deliberately not tried to emulate his father’s tough, uncompromising management style! Richard joined Control Risks in the early drawn by a clear fascination with how geo-politics and security impact international business. This has afforded him a fascinating insight into how senior executives approach risk: some are over cautious, others reckless while a find that right balance between sensible prudence and bold ambition. We spoke of Brexit and the mood in the world. In particular, the lack of inspiring political leadership and why politics is now such an unappealing career. But Richard is optimistic about the next generation of leaders in business military, civil and voluntary sector – people of exceptional quality . The environmental movement suggests that there is no absence of leadership among the  younger generation with their vision and determination. We talked about inspiring Leaders –in particular Richard’s friend Roelf Meyer, one of the architects along with now South African President  Cyril Ramaphosa of post-Apartheid South Africa. Roelf is a clear example of both clear political vison and personal moral courage. In the business world, the job of CEO was to lead from behind in good times and let others step forward. But when things don’t go so well, then you need to lead from the front As CEO running a consultancy or professional services firm – you are acutely aware that your people are your product. Your brand and reputation relies on the quality of thousands of human interactions all over the world every single day.  And you are hiring people often not for their general business skills but for very specific individual expertise. You need to recognise that deploying this expertise is what fundamentally motivates them. They may be interested in the overall success of the firm but this is not their primary motivation. And high degrees of expertise are often accompanied by quirky personality traits! The best example of someone who can lead a team of highly talented individuals, working against the odds as a very successful team over a very sustained period of time is Mick Jagger – not an obvious example but worth thinking about! The biggest danger to success is the myth of the super-human- CEO who can single-handedly transform huge organisations – its profoundly wrong and they can’t. CEOs who have started to believe their own cultish propaganda  should be on the top right hand corner of any risk register. As a result he was awarded the Queens Commendation for Valuable Service (QCVS) in 2004.He found that a lot of adjustment and learning was needed to transition from the military to a Professional Services Firm (PSF) in 2005. Since this interview Jonny has been selected to be the first CEO of the global Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) from February 2020. He looks forward to working with all involved in world tennis to grow and develop the TIU into a broader-based integrity organisation for professional tennis. In Control Risks he had leadership consulting roles in EMEA &amp; the Americas based in LA. David is a business leader and mentor with Thales and served 30 years in the British Army, including four tours with Special Forces. He ended his military career at Sandhurst where he was responsible for redesigning leadership training based on his operational experience and was credited with the biggest change to the Sandhurst course since the Second World War. With knowledge gained from his MBA at Cranfield University, he created a modern learning culture at Sandhurst that prioritised the learners’ needs over those of the institution. David was appointed Group CEO of Wilton &amp; Bain in May 2017, following a Group-wide MBO in partnership with Beechbrook Capital. Prior to this, David spent 20 years, building, leading &amp; pioneering highly successful interim management businesses aligned to the Global Technology &amp; Digital markets. He has been regularly quoted in leading media (Forbes, Huffington Post, FT) for his opinions on the rise of interim management, gig economy and alternative consulting models. He is a CIS Engineer with over 35 years’ experience in a variety of military roles including, leading organisations, Strategic Human Resource, Organisation Development, as well as training and education.  In a previous role he was the Principal of the Defence College of Communications and Information Services and his efforts in transforming the College were recognised with him being appointed as an Officer of the British Empire (OBE). He has a BSc (Hons) and three Masters level degrees comprising an MBA, MA in History, and an MSc in Strategic HR as well as being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Chartered Management Institute (CMI), and the Learning Performance Institute (LPI). He has also recently completed his first book offering an insight into 35 years of leadership and the lessons he has learnt.
