Season 2 Epsiode 6

It's our second year of podcasting and in this episode, it's business as usual as we review the latest on lung protective ventilation from the BMJ and learn about the UK National Tracheostomy Safety Project. We hold the inaugural meeting of epidurals anonymous and discuss the most recent NCEPOD report on in-hospital cardiac arrests. Emboldened by recent successes, Bex decides we should start a Biology or Bunkum leader board, we are collectively repulsed by the state of Mark's scrubs and introduce our new favourite feature, Mark's Monthly.

Season 2 Episode 1

Separated by 17,500 miles but still podcasting – in this international episode we discuss the timing of TPN, the future of airway research and some stuff about genetics that it turns out no one really understands. In addition to our discoveries and Biology or Bunkum, we introduce our new feature 'Question of the Month', where we challenge you to answer Mark's monthly brainteaser for an as yet undecided and probably valueless prize. Just in case we forgot to mention it, we're now on twitter as @GasCast.

It's time for plan B as we all get together for the first time in over a year and attempt to record an episode around Frank's kitchen table, with variable results. Amongst quite a few uneditable mistakes, we muddle through the MHRA safety update on post-surgical codeine prescription in children, spontaneous intracranial hypotension, and IT security via the contents of Bex's laptop. All of this plus Mazda Bongos, recycling and a Biology or Bunkum replacement called Physics of Fiction.

This month we're mythbusting as we try to put to bed some of the more dubious, less evidence based anaesthetic practices. In this episode we take on uncuffed ET tubes in paediatrics, lateralisation for epidurals, CVP for fluid balance and cricoid pressure. It's our one year anniversary and we've recorded a special episode from the GAT Annual Scientific Meeting in Glasgow. Co-hosted by June Rahman and Lucy Evans, we distil down the best lectures and learning points from the conference and interview some of the excellent speakers, organisers and delegates. There's a slightly surreal web based educational meeting when GasCast meets Gasclass and we round it off with a Scottish themed Biology or Bunkum.

Episode 8

Extreme vagal manoeuvres, Star Trek style translator apps and lignocaine magic all feature in this month's discoveries. Bex whips through the latest CMACE report, Frank reviews the evidence for ECMO and Mark tells us which drugs he'll be using for RSIs in 2012. Rik uses the new alcohol AUDIT tool to see who's been over-indulging this festive season and makes up this month's bunkum in the bath.

Episode 6

Better late than never, this episode was recorded a few weeks ago but remains nearly as relevant today, as it was then. In somewhat of Tramadol haze, Mark navigates his way through the main medical journals and poses some interesting questions concerning speciality guest appearances in ED and tobacco funded research, and imparts some friendly advice to Bex on her upcoming cycling tour. Frank does a Tomorrow's World spot and and gives us the low down on vehicular based patient monitoring, while Bex finds Anaesthesia News strangely 'uplifting'. For this month's journal paper, Rik looks at the year's biggest critical care news from the PROSEVA trial and learns how patient proning can lead to a relative risk reduction of 50% from ARDS mortality. For the first time ever, Bex is on the quiz master's chair for BorB and Frank gets burned by the unlikely tag team of a recovery nurse and a cardiology SHO.

Season 3 Episode 3

There's loads in the news this month as we whizz through the big medical journals learning that most research findings are in fact false, and insisting on gown and gloves in ICU reduces the number of room entries, just not the spread of resistant organisms. Bex dodges her rant and instead delivers a new feature 'Rebecca's Rhyme', kicking off our quarterly poetry corner. Mark has an in depth look at the recent Cochrane perioperative fluid meta-analysis and we attempt to make sense of the pretty complex statistical analysis. Links to resources in this month's mega notes. It's Frank's turn to take the reigns of BorB for a fluid themed contest with a shocking result.

 Season 3 Episode 2

We're back after a brief hiatus with the same old presenters, same old theme music but a brand new format. In this episode you can look forward to cheap Nandos, instructions on how to donate your body to medical science, zombie ants and a search engine that makes the internet more palatable. Additionally there is some anaesthesia related content, with education on organ donation, work force planning news and data suggesting that there is in fact a magic number for intraoperative blood pressure, and that number is....

Season 3 Episode 1

After three months of conferences and guest presenters we're back to our usual format with Frank, Bex, Mark and Rik talking about all things anaesthesia related. This month that includes live pets on ICU, dead pets in resuscitation science, US military agony rays and the brown note. Bex is back cheerleading for NAP while Frank tells us what (if any) difference our fancy CO monitors are making in big anaesthesia cases. Rik gets overexcited about the isolated forearm technique and Mark, as ever, is not impressed by our profession's lackadaisical approach to the adoption of non-leur spinal connectors.

Season 2 Episode 11

We're back with a GasCast GATcast special. In this podcast we attempt to distil down three days of excellent lectures, workshops and social events into a 90 minute podcast with varying degrees of success. We've got live interviews from the floor and post-match analysis featuring some old favourites and new voices all from this year's fantastic GAT annual scientific meeting in Oxford.

GAT 2013 ASM Special

We're back to our usual format this month with Sibs Anwar standing in for a holidaying Frank. Gastric ultrasound once again rears its head to provoke a contrary Dr. Salmon, priming him for this month's rant. We also look at the latest AAGBI post-anaesthesia recovery guidelines and a case report of cardiac arrest on an obstetric unit using a remifentanil PCA. All of this plus our discoveries, Biology or Bunkum and flaming hairdryers.

Season 2 Episode 9

You say lignocaine, I say lidocaine. Whatever your persuasion of pronunciation, it's all about this humble local anaesthetic in January as we proclaim it to be the 'Ketamine of 2013'. We look at some fascinating results in prehospital advanced airway management from Japan, and Frank presents some broccoli research on high tidal volumes in Cardiac ITU. Plus our New Year discoveries and a slightly smutty Biology or Bunkum.

Season 2 Episode 7

This month we use science and research to classify a range of everyday anaesthetic items as either good or bad. We review the important and impressive EuSOS study, discuss opioid-induced hyperalgesia and look at what might the nail in the coffin for hetastarches. Mark gets excited about some more helicopter science and we play an Ig Nobel themed game of Biology or Bunkum. Sadly, Bex is absent this episode but her seat is kept warm by Sibs Anwar.

Season 2 Episode 4

In this bumper episode, Bex interviews legend of thoracic anaesthesia Professor Peter Slinger and Frank brings us the first news from the emergency laparotomy network. Rik learns some valuable lessons in bariatric ventilation and Mark revisits the evidence and use of hyperosmolar therapy in traumatic brain injury. We've got some follow up from last episode, discoveries, news and a surprise result in Biology or Bunkum.

Season 2 Episode 3

We're keeping it clinical this episode as we present novel uses for ultrasound in anaesthesia and intensive care. Discoveries include the thinking behind needle stylets, Mark on TV and why you should run if you meet Rik in an anaesthetic room. We've got the rest of our usual features plus a mystery celebrity anaesthetic guest! What more could you want? Free beer? We've got that too.
