Thabiti Anyabwile, Ken Jones, and Mark Dever on Black Churches

This is the second part of Thabiti’s two-part lecture series at First Presbyterian (Columbia, SC) and Erskine Seminary. He was delivering the annual John L. Girardeau lectures. Girardeau (1825-1898) pastored a congregation of slaves at the height of the institution and alone opposed segregation in the Southern Presbyterian Church. The lectures have the general title, “Bondage or Freedom? Questions in Early American Theology." In this lecture, Thabiti considers Lemuel Haynes and his rather developed abolitionist stance against slavery.

In this podcast, Tony Carter and Phil Duncanson chop it up with their wives and discuss what biblical womanhood is. How is it recognized, encouraged, and nourished in the church? What does it mean that God's agenda for womanhood is a kingdom agenda? Listen to these four, sittin’ on the Front Porch, discuss how God reflects his compassion and wisdom in women. After all, womanhood is not simply the object of man's licentious desires or worldly feminism. Rather, biblical womanhood transcends these misconceptions and seeks to bless God's kingdom and his purposes.

Reformed Theology and the Status Quo

Louis Love, Thabiti Anyabwile, and Tony Carter sit and chop it on The Front Porch, this time with a focus on defining “the black church.” Sifting through many common or assumed nuances, the brothers define the black church as “a congregation of people converted and called out under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, observing the ordinances and the preaching of the gospel, who live in faith and on mission. Wherever we find that and it’s predominantly African-American (in this country, at least), we are talking about the black church.” Though sometimes the black church is narrowly defined by the historic black denominations, it can also humorously be defined as “the place where the preacher’s black, the music is gospel, the mothers are prayin’, and we stay all day.” C’mon upon the porch and let us know what you think in the comments’ section below.

In this talk, Thabiti Anyabwile narrows the broad subject of African-American theology down to "Big God Theology" -- a yearning that has existed in the African-American church historically for a big God. He encapsulates the theological reflections of African-Americans as they have thought about God in their particular sojourn. Unpacking the theology of the African-American Christian experience, Thabiti argues that there are five particular ways African-Americans have understood God. That is that God is Bigger than suffering, injustice, history, race, and complexity. 

Big God Theology: The Contributions and Challenges of African-American Theology

You might be a young brother wondering where you should get trained for ministry. Maybe you're a seasoned pastor, but you feel led to pursue formal education. If you're anywhere in between, it's natural to wonder where should get trained and why. How do you discern what type of training will best equip you for the ministry? When should you go about pursuing this training? Should you categorically oppose all non-evangelical schools? What do we even mean by the term, "evangelical?" Seeing as how brothers are faced with many options when it comes to formal theological training, I thought it'd be helpful to chat with my man Steven Harris. 

Steven is a graduate student at Yale University, which was founded by Puritan clergy for theological training. He studies black religion in the African diaspora. A Vanderbilt graduate, Steven received his Master of Divinity degree at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has formerly served as assistant pastor for a Kentucky Baptist church. I brought him up on the porch to discuss what training at a non-evangelical school is like. What effect will training at a non-evangelical school have on the future of the black church? Ministry Training with Bible Doubters: Questions & Counsel

At the New Life Conference, Thabiti Anyabwile preached on Genesis 11:27-12:3 to show that 1) the life of faith is a going life 2) the life of faith is a great life and 3) the life of faith is a guarded life. Thabiti reminds us that Christ's call to "go" from Matt. 28 recapitulates God's call for Abraham to "go." He says, "the besetting sin of the Western church is a complacent staying." At the New Life Conference, Anthony Carter preached on Genesis 2:4-25 to show that creation is 1) God's power displayed, 2) God's beauty portrayed, and 3) Creation is intelligently made. Stressing the already-and-not-yet, Carter spoke of how in Christ work, worship, and relationships are redeemed and will be redeemed. God gave Adam work, a will, and a wife for his glory. On work, Carter said, "preachers like to make much of themselves because they make much of preaching, but any work is worship to God, who gives each man a "calling." Expounding on these points he saw in the text, Thabiti made clear how the Bible anticipates a day when it will be impossible not to be righteous.
