In this episode of the Move to Tacoma Podcast we interviewed Matthew Wilson and Quincy Tyson. Matthew is the Executive Director of the Oasis Youth Center. Oasis is Pierce County’s only LGBTQ+ youth center. Founded in 1985, Oasis is a drop-in, resource, and support center. Oasis is a safe space for Queer youth to learn, connect, and thrive. Oasis envisions a world where Queer youth are valued as strong, creative leaders. Quincy is the new executive director of Tacoma’s Rainbow Center. Through education, advocacy, and celebration, Rainbow Center expands resources and safe space for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, two-spirit, and allied (LGBTQ2SA) community. Matthew and Quincy shared about how Tacomans can support the queer community in Tacoma. In addition to attending Pride 2023, they shared their ideas on how all Tacomans can be allies. They also shared the biggest obstacles facing the LGBTQIA+ community in Tacoma and Washington State right now. Tacoma Pride 2023 Tacoma Pride is in July because it gives people the opportunity to go to Pride Events in Seattle and June. “The nice thing about being queer in Tacoma is that we get two pride months!” says Quincy. Pride is more than the big event on July 8th. It will be held at 9th and Pacific Avenue in Downtown Tacoma from Noon to 6pm. There’s a series events put on by a bunch of different community partners. Check out this interview where Nerd Farmer Host Nate Bowling interviews Zev Cook and David Galazin from Tacoma4All. They’re working to improve tenant protections for tenants in Tacoma by introducing a Tenants Bill of Rights. Tacoma is one of the most challenging places in the country to rent a home, and it’s getting tougher. Their first step is organizing tenants for a ballot initiative. Unsurprisingly that initiative is being opposed by the landlord and real estate lobbies. We were excited by this interview and wanted to share it out on the MovetoTacoma.com platform so more people could hear who is putting the initiative together and WHY it is happening here in Tacoma. Examples of some items from the initiative:  Relocation Assistance for renters whose rent is increased 5% (or 10% yearly) Eviction Protections (including banning winter evictions and school year evictions when children are present in the home) No rent increases for units with code violations  Tacoma4All is a citizen initiative led by tenants in Tacoma and their allies. The initiative calls for protections for renters, protection from predatory institutional landlords, fair practices around excess fees, mandated situational relocation assistance, and longer notification periods for rent hikes and forced moves. They talk their podcast “The Walk Home” which investigates the killing of Manny Ellis by Tacoma Police. Both reporters grew up in Pierce County and describe what drew them to create the podcast, the challenges of reporting on the community you live in, and the complexities of the justice system in a small city like Tacoma. The 2020 police killing of Manuel ‘Manny’ Ellis, a Black man in Tacoma, brought a reckoning to Washington State and has set up what promises to be one of the highest-profile trials in Pacific Northwest history. On Parks and Living Like the Mountain Is Out – With Hunter George

Tacoma Against Nazis is a group for people in Tacoma who are against nazis. “We tried to give it a straightforward title,” says Halley. “No bones about it. You’re either for or against Nazis. And we’re against.” This came about in June 2018 after a handful of Tacoma residents became fed up with how nationally and locally white supremacist groups are feeling emboldened. The group became aware of a group of neo-nazis operating a tattoo parlor and decided to do something about it. Halley says the question that drove the creation of the group was, “What are the white progressives of Tacoma going to actually do to show up against white supremacy?” Halley says, “You can talk about it or you can acknowledge that you don’t know exactly what to do but you know you have to do something.” What started as a small gathering of concerned Tacomans on Father’s Day turned into a Facebook group of over 1000 Tacomans, multiple protests at the tattoo shop, the website DisconnectWhitePower.com, and a series of outreach events at local organizations such as Tacoma Sunrise Rotary. In addition to protests and outreach in the community, the group has organized letter writing campaigns to the landlords of the tattoo shop and others to raise awareness of the existence of their activities. Their efforts have received national press coverage and generated considerable conversation here in Tacoma. “There is a sense of there being a normalizing of activity around white supremacy, around this sense of ‘we won’t back down’ ‘you won’t quiet us’ ‘we were censored previously in the previous political climate and we are going to be out and about and proud with our ideologies’,” says Cheryl. “And thus you have groups like the Proud Boys and Patriot Front who are gaining more recognition nationally and these ideas are becoming more a part of the mainstream. There has been a significant normalizing of these activities.” They talk about how this normalization has impacted white progressives who may have ignored some of these activities in the past to educate themselves and be more active in countering these groups. “Previously we might have seen someone flying some kind of nazi flag and thought ‘well that’s embarrassing’- it’s very easy to dismiss that as a white woman because I can walk past that nazi flag and nothing is going to happen to me. But we need to recognize that our neighbors of color are living a very different reality where that poses a very real threat to their physical safety.” “To be totally frank we’re late,” says Halley. “We’re way late to this party. But we’re here now and we’re awake to it and we’re trying to do everything that we can to make up for lost time and especially show the rest of our community that there are people here who are willing to stand up to it.” “Let me tell you we’re getting a lot more pushback from our fellow white liberals than from actual nazis.” Five months in, the organizers and members of Tacoma Against Nazis have put a lot of time and energy into their efforts to show up responsibly against white supremacy in Tacoma. They’ve kept their focus on the tattoo shop and on other displays of white supremacy (such as some anti immigrant posters put up all over town). The group has learned you can’t please everyone, and they’ve received criticism from people who think they’ve gone too far as well as people who think they haven’t been radical enough. “We’re a bunch of mom’s and teachers,” says Halley. Cheryl and Halley share advice they have for other people wanting to organize in their community. Mainly, have very clear goals, be ready for pushback from local leaders, and learn to channel peoples passion into workgroups set to achieve specific goals (security, organizing, social media, etc). For those who are concerned with Tacoma getting negative reputation because of people openly talking about nazis and white supremacists, know that this activity is a problem everywhere. “This is a problem in the United States,” says Halley. “This is a problem everywhere. So I would actually venture to say that based on the immersion into the white supremacist problem that we’ve had over the past months- I actually think Tacoma has a pretty small problem compared to much of the rest of the country… we can stamp this out if we get on it right now.” Want to fight Nazis in Tacoma? Here are some things you can do: 1. Educate yourself about White Supremacist and Nazi symbols. Watch the Frontline documentary about the rise of White Supremacists across the country. 2. Speak up and make life uncomfortable for people who espouse hateful ideologies. According to Tacoma Against Nazi member Hope just speaking up and saying ‘I’m not OK with this,’ or ‘I’m not comfortable with this ideology and this is not what America means to me,’ can make a huge difference. 3. Join the Tacoma Against Nazis Facebook Group and find a way to use your talents to help. 4. Follow Disconnect White Power on Twitter and read their blog posts. Top Tips for doing the work: “If there’s anything that I personally have learned from everything that we’ve gone through as a group- it’s that you just have to stick to what you know with a sense of conviction. And that may be different than even your fellow group members. You are what you practice. If you show up that’s what and who you are. If you don’t show up that’s what and who you are. So there’s a lot of noise, there’s a lot of invisible connections, at the end of the day do what you know is right. Do what you feel with conviction.” – Cheryl “My top tip for people trying to wade through the noise is have a baby at the same time. Because I’m so tired and over all of it that I just have no time or patience to dig into any of the ego or the permission. Photo by GritCityPhoto Marc’s Move to Tacoma Story Marc grew up in the Quad Cities, but after a vacation brought him to the area he knew he wanted to move to the Pacific Northwest. A Zookeeper, he found a job as the Zoological Curator with Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in East Pierce County. Moving to Tacoma Marc used the MoveToTacoma.com website to research neighborhoods from Illinois and figure out where he wanted to live. He loves the convenience of downtown living and ended up choosing a place in the city and commuting to his job in the country. A Cool Job As Zoological Curator Marc makes sure that the animals at Northwest Trek are taken care of and manages the people who care for the animals. Northwest Trek is most famous for its Free Roaming area- 435 acres where herds of elk, bison, and big horned sheep roam free. Visitors get to see the animals on a 50 minute tram ride. This allows for some up close and personal encounters! Trek also has an awesome area for kids and several zip lines and “Treetop Adventure Courses” of varying difficulty. What’s it like living in Downtown Tacoma Marc has a dog and got familiar with his new city by going for walks. It’s easier to get a feel for the city by walking, rather than driving. From there it was a combination of talking to people from work who lived in town and listening to the Move To Tacoma podcast to get familiar with what what is happening in the city and who some of the people in town are. He started hanging out at The Forum, Odd Otter Brewing, and MSM Sandwiches on 6th ave. Finding Friends – Is there a Tacoma Freeze? Marc didn’t know anyone when he moved to the Pacific Northwest, but he has found it easy to make friends in Tacoma. He says he doesn’t think there’s a Tacoma freeze. He’s also been very proactive and intentional about making friends. He’s used sites like MeetUp.com to meet other people new to Tacoma. He also joined the Tacoma Mountaineers to meet other people interested in learning skills for hiking and outdoor activities- from climbing to outdoor first aid. Marc didn’t know anyone when he moved to the Pacific Northwest, but he has found it easy to make friends in Tacoma. He says he doesn’t think there’s a Tacoma freeze. He joined an adult sports league called, Comeback Sports. His advice is to find people who share your interests. MovetoTacoma.com creator Marguerite asked her financial coach, Chris to convert their monthly call to a podcast to get his advice. Chris has been helping Marguerite track her spending and get out of debt for over five years. Marguerite is worried since she is self employed, but ready to face the uncertainty and create an emergency budget in the face of Covid-19. But how do we do it?   It is impossible to predict the full economic fallout as we face the Covid-19 pandemic. For those of us who own small businesses or who have just had our places of employment closed- there are VERY BIG CONCERNS about loss of income. How do you create an emergency budget in the face of so much uncertainty? 1. Get clear – You need to know what’s coming in and what’s going out. If you have lost your job but your spouse still has some income figure out how much you still have coming in. Next, you need to make a list of all of the current spending you are doing. Chris recommends looking up your previous months bank statements and listing out all of your spending and categorizing it to see what your spending is NOW.   2. Create a Spending Plan for your new income reality – What are the fixed bills in your life? What are the things you absolutely need. Fixed bills are things like mortgage/rent, utilities, and phone bill. Next might be car payment, car insurance, your life insurance, and student loans. A list of necessities usually begins with food and groceries. Chris says to ask yourself, “What do I need in order to survive?” Chris says not to forget about prescriptions, and mental health and well being. We discussed the need to prioritize spending our money in our own communities over spending money at corporations and out of our communities. If you have the option to spend money with your neighbors, do it!   3. Stigma and Shame – Chris suggested that we re-evaluate our way of life and our spending and get creative. Marguerite said that during the 2008 Financial Crisis she experienced a lot of shame when the market fell very quickly, because it only seemed to impact a few people at first. With Covid-19, everyone seems to be struggling. Chris says, “If somebody is going to judge me, that’s on them.” We must be honest with each other and ask for help if we need it. We are all in this together.   4. Daily practice/choose clarity – Each day we should go through practices that make you YOU so that you can take on your day. For Chris his daily coffee is an essential ritual. Dean Burke comes on the podcast to talk about how all Tacoma’s can have a closer connection to the sea. Dean is the Executive Director of the Tacoma South Sound Sports Commission. He left the Texas Gulf Coast for Tacoma’s North End 23 years ago.   Marguerite spent some time on the water with Burke for TryTacoma.tv and sings it’s praises as a transformative experience. Burke’s dialogue about the Pacific Northwest landscape is both informative and poetic. They talk about the connectivity to the sea and the increase in the community’s increased desire to strengthen that relationship by renting or purchasing paddleboards, kayaks and more.     Burke can rattle off a plethora of resources for those looking for outlets including the best and easiest places to rent gear and local groups that provide a team environment with more of a club opportunity. In short, there are lots of opportunities to get our body in the water.     What is the Tacoma South Sound Sports Commission and what do they do? Burke lays it all out for listeners and goes on to speak on how the shoreline is an asset for sports development.     Dean finds importance and value in referring to the Puget Sound as the Salish Sea. While Puget Sound is an excellent way to refer to the neighborhood or section of the Salish Sea we reside in.     The two touch on advocating for the sea. Tacoma is on a rebound from severe damage that was done to our shoreline. While there has been some positive shifts with the eco system, it’s still a work in progress. Biggest thing that Burke champions for is getting people to cross that threshold from land to water and what you do next is up to you.     Burke is super stoked about an event in June called The Seventy48. Inspired by the Race to Alaska, the Seventy48 is a man powered race from the Museum of Glass to Port Townsend. 70 miles, 48 hours, no sails, no support. It’s a historical moment for Tacoma, the race is starting at the Foss Waterway, the first EPA’s first superfund site. There will be a huge kick off party too. Punk Rock, Punches &amp; Puget Sound: Before moving to Tacoma 10 years ago, Forest was a drummer for various punk rock bands and was deep into the rock n roll scene in Rhode Island. Somewhere in there he spent some time as a competitive boxer, which as he put it, “was the first step in improving his life.”After applying to universities in the Pacific Northwest, he made it to the University of Puget Sound where he earned a Bachelor’s degree, as a Psychology major.Banjo and Bluegrass: A 1991 Toyota Camry was the sweet chariot of transportation that delivered Forest to Tacoma and since the drum kit didn’t fit in the backseat, Forest’s grandpa gifted him with a banjo which serendipitously led to his involvement with the Tacoma Bluegrass Band “Barley Wine Review”. He later went on to found the Rusty Cleavers and release solo albums.The Tacoma Music Scene: Forest talks about how the blue grass and country music scene in Tacoma seems to ebb and flow in ways that are healthy. Plus, he talks about the abundance of live music venues and dishes what aspects are the most valuable for performers in building a relationship with venues and supporting good shows.Consumate Hustler: As a performer you gotta work that hustle. Beutel says social media and a strong web presence is crucial. On top of working the promo gig, he manages booking, website, Instagram, YouTube updates and more.  While history hounds are in the know, many may wonder what’s the difference between the Tacoma Historical Society and the Washington State Historical Society. Mary Mikel Stump clarifies that the WSHS is a parent agency and was founded in the late 1800’s. She reveals that the epic looking brick building in the Stadium District that plays as home base is not a secret spy agency as Marguerite has often suspected. As Director of Audience Engagement, Stump says, “As a non-profit and a state agency we look to see how the history of the state of Washington connects us all.” She also discusses the very reasonably priced annual membership and perks. She laughs when talking about the abundance of 4th and 6th graders that visit the museum but assures listeners, “there’s a lot to do in-between.” And she reflects on how people connect with objects on display and the stories contained within those objects. Stump and her husband, who works with Metro Parks, live in a lovely older home in Tacoma’s North End. She says, “We had an antique house in Texas, it’s not a house, it’s a lifestyle. I kept gravitating to old houses here with walkable neighborhoods and the North End has so much to offer.” Marguerite’s skydiving experience takes her down the DB Cooper rabbit hole since she missed the recent DB Cooper exhibit and Mary Mikel tells us about some past and upcoming special themed gatherings and exhibits including spotlights on Bigfoot, UFOs, McNeil Island and even mountaineering. The permanent exhibit includes a Great Hall of WA history with factoids about the why, the who and the how as well as details about industry, natural resources, the Depression, logging, maritime and more. The current temporary exhibit is Toytopia and is available to view until June 10th. This isn’t your average museum experience,  you can journey through the nostalgia at any age with toys from all generations! Also, worth checking out are the regular 21+ “History After Hours” gatherings, which include beer! (yes, IN the museum). You can also look forward to the upcoming Make/Do exhibit, opening on July 14 where the museum will highlight creative reuse! The Space: Alma Mater Tacoma at 1322 South Fawcett, is a live music venue, artist co-working space, café and lounge all wrapped into one. The grand opening of Alma Mater takes place the weekend of April 19, with festivities occurring each day through Saturday the 21. Festivities include an all ages dance party with DJ Eddie Bermuda and Sassy Black (Thurs), Live Music with Deep Sea Divers, SISTERS and Smokey Brights (Fri), Lucha Volcanica and Filthy FemCorps (an all ages afternoon show Sat), and Lucha Volcanica and Gritty City Sirens (21+ Sat Evening). Other festivities include art installations throughout the space. Ervin describes the space as an artist driven work, performance and hospitality space. “We don’t need to build community, we just need a place to connect them and have conversations from different communities.” This space hopes to facilitate those conversations. The Origin: The space has been a work in progress for 3 years now. Ervin and Spiro talk about the project’s roots beginning with founder, Jason Heminger talking about how physical space matters and inspires people to look at things and work in different ways. Heminger’s background in the arts and education really laid the foundation for what Alma Mater would evolve into. An investor befriended Heminger while working together in the education world and believed in his vision as a musician who wanted to explore what it takes for an artist to sell their work. At the core of what Alma Mater is doing is the artist incubator. The leading questions are what is it and how can we help you achieve your goals? Resources will include coach led mentorships focusing on the music studio. A 6-month program will come on line a bit later. The café, Honey and venue, Fawcett Hall are already in full working order. Next to follow will be the lounge Matriarch with the workspace and incubator to finish it all off. Honey Café offers up well executed espresso made with Heart Coffee paired with elegant and compelling brunch bites crafted by chef, Kyle Wnuk. Open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. the space boasts open, airy vibes with plenty of USB ports. The Matriarch Lounge will officially open in a few weeks. The menu will highlight a passion for carefully crafted libations paired with small plates highlighting big flavor. Shows being booked in the 500-person venue are elevated the live show scene on a local level. The first show hosted at Fawcett Hall was coordinated by Danno Presents and SOLD OUT. And there are already an itinerary of shows to look forward to thanks to the booking team, with Spiro leading the helm including acts booked by The Warehouse Team, Darryl Cruz. Many ask what it’s all about, what is this space for? Ervin says, “It’s for artists in Tacoma and their patrons and it’s about wanting to change the way a city interacts with artist.” Key concepts Alma Mater is trying to support includes accessibility, and a sense of ownership of the space on all different levels for all artistic communities. The space aims to be as reflective of Tacoma and the people who reside and create here as possible. In closing, Spiro wanted to express the reason the group chose the name that Ervin articulates so well. The name of the space, Alma Mater also translates to “Nurturing Mother” or spirit mother in Latin. Though schools have adopted it, and Alma Mater Tacoma has an education spirit at its core, the space as a whole is meant to nurture artists and provide a safe, nurturing, open and progressive experience for all without people feeling judged or that they don’t know enough or that it’s inaccessible. The name carries throughout the space with Mothership Studios, Honey Café and Matriarch Lounge. Ervin says, “It’s for artists in Tacoma and their patrons and it’s about wanting to change the way a city interacts with artist.” Key concepts Alma Mater is trying to support includes accessibility, and a sense of ownership of the space on all different levels for all artistic communities. The space aims to be as reflective of Tacoma and the people who reside and create here as possible. In closing, Spiro wanted to express the reason the group chose the name that Ervin articulates so well. The name of the space, Alma Mater also translates to “Nurturing Mother” or spirit mother in Latin. Though schools have adopted it, and Alma Mater Tacoma has an education spirit at its core, the space as a whole is meant to nurture artists and provide a safe, nurturing, open and progressive experience for all without people feeling judged or that they don’t know enough or that it’s inaccessible. The name carries throughout the space with Mothership Studios, Honey Café and Matriarch Lounge. The Move to Tacoma podcast has had a big year, loads of cool guests and insightful topics of discussion made their way into the studio in 2017. Special Guest Host, Erik Hanberg sat down and talked with Marguerite Martin about 2017 and what’s coming our way in 2018.  Marguerite changed her last name in 2017! It’s a new, much easier to spell last name, too! Marguerite Martin!   One major goal of Marguerite’s in 2017 was to be more engaged with local politics. The two touch on this wildly successful attempt in the Adult Civics Happy Hour series. Insightful discussions led by Nate Bowling on political topics that Marguerite likes to call, “What you should have learned in social studies,” have served as a new way to connect and be civically engaged.  My friend Jenny sent me a picture of an ad at the airport the other day. It was a picture of a man on a hiking adventure that said, “A place for FEARLESS exploration.” She thought it was a good topic for conversation- what’s up with that slogan? Do they mean Tacoma is scary?  The folks over at Exit133 talked about it when the slogan first debuted– but I thought it would be fun to go right to the source,  Bennish Brown from the Tacoma Regional Convention and Visitor Bureau. Bennish Brown and his wife moved to Tacoma 3 years ago so he could take this job. He’d never lived anywhere but North Carolina, and I must say, his excitement about our area is infectious. He’s lived in Downtown Tacoma, at Ruston’s Commencement Condominiums, and now in Tacoma’s West Slope– and he loves it. “I like the things that are beginning to happen here, ” I like that this is now a home for me at this part in my life.” Bennish says the first thing they had to figure out as they worked to raise the profile of Tacoma and Pierce County as a destination for tourism and for events was “What makes us unique?” They settled on focusing on Mt Rainier, Classic Cars, and Glass Art as things we have in our area that other people don’t have.
