The standard practice for most middle-class American families was to have dinner at home every night during the week. Occasionally on a given weekend, the treat of dinner at a sit-down restaurant or a drive-in might happen. We recall how many moms were stay-at-home moms who would cook for the family each night, and how families gathered around the dining table to eat and interact. Sometimes dinner was a meal brought home from our favorite burger, pizza, or chicken place, and that was a treat in itself!  A few years later when we had our drivers licenses and some money in our pockets, we could go to our favorite fast-food place and order anything we wanted. Childhood Thrills, Chills, and Spills...and An Occasional Trip to the Emergency Room

Remember taking snapshots with a film camera, while being careful to take each shot so as not to waste film?  Remember taking the film to be developed, and waiting a few days to get 12, 24, or 36 prints or slides back?  On this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, we remember those times, along with a few of our favorite Kodak moments. It was a lengthy process in which we had to be careful because of the limited number of pictures available on a roll of film. Today we look back at taking pictures, crossing our fingers when taking the film to the drug store or Fotomat, then waiting to get it developed and returned to us. Finally, we share the thrill and relief of seeing our finished pictures, clear and in focus!  We also recall movie cameras and movie film, and watching home movies or color slides on home projectors with a captive audience of family and friends. We compare those memories to how it is today with palm-sized camcorders and instant digital photos from Smartphones. Remember a time before automation, when most things we did were muscle powered? Baseball is our topic on this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site. Yes, Baseball, the great American pastime. George Haloulakos helps us to remember the days gone by of baseball, particularly while he was growing up in the 60s. George and his father have written a fantastic treatise on baseball history during this time period. We remember two celebrated players of the past, Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. George tells us the story of the move west by the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants in 1958, and how baseball was a uniting force in Southern California. Attending games and listening to the games on radio were popular activities. This was a different time in the world of baseball, and we also talk about the great personality of Don Drysdale, who while immensely popular as a player, was also loved and respected because of his dedication to his fans. Lots of memories and lots of players are recalled, certain to bring back memories of spring and summers gone by. Mike B looks back to the beginnings of Archie and his adventures with Betty, Veronica, and Jughead. From the very early days to the present, we look back at the many comics, books, TV shows, and hit music that the Archies have inspired. The Galaxy Guys wrap up the segment by recalling some other favorite comics of the past. Next, we look at the history of Telephone Answering Machines. Mike Z guides us as we look at the technical and cultural side of these machines. Machines that would record incoming calls were around a long time ago, but the phone company had a lot to say as to why they were not available early on. We also look at the cultural side of having an answering machine. Now we could screen calls and decide which, if any calls we would answer or even return. Many of these toys are now iconic, and Ian has a great list of toys that you will remember or have heard of.  Mike talks to us about Wham-O, who manufactured such toys as the Frisbee, the Hula-Hoop, and the Slip and Slide.  Mike has memories of these and a few more toys made by this company.   Smitty has news of a recently discovered 1959 NBC video tape of "Meet Cyd Charisse".  This early color video tape, highlighting the musical talents of Cyd Charisse, Eve Arden, and Tony Martin is in pristine original condition. On this episode, we look back at Garage Bands, particularly in the Los Angeles area. These were groups of young guys and gals who would put together a band and rehearse and play in their garages. Dreams of stardom and fame were ever-present. Next we look at the golden age of Train Travel. There was a time when traveling by train was a popular way to see the country or visit relatives in far away cities. Finally, we look at Black and White versus Color TV and Movies. Some of our favorite films and TV shows are in color, some in black and white. We look at the contrasts between these two, and how some of the films and TV shows we can't imagine if they were shot the opposite way. Garage Bands, Train Travel, and Black & White Movies and TV Shows

We remember "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson.  He was the undisputed king of late-night TV, and he is very fondly remembered by millions of people.  It is impossible to think of the number of individuals who would wind up their day by watching Johnny Carson as a nightly ritual.  He started on the Tonight Show after Jack Parr left the show in 1962, and he was on the air for years thereafter until 1992.  The first ten years of the show originated in New York, and the final 20 years were from Burbank, California.  Many of us remember his final week of shows and the touching tribute by Bette Midler. The range of guests appearing on the Tonight Show during those years ran the gamut from comedians, actors, authors, and political figures.  Carson's sidekicks Ed McMahon and Doc Severinsen are also well remembered.  The banter and humor between them was always funny, and added much to the show. On January 29, 2017, we lost our dear friend Jack Vincent, who passed away at his home at the age of 99 years. Jack worked in radio for many years, notably working the overnight air shift at KCBQ in San Diego from the 1950s to the 1970s. He worked at other stations previously, and also worked as an engineer at KCBQ. He was truly the Dean of San Diego Radio Broadcasters. On this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, Smitty and Mike are joined by their good friend "Shotgun Tom" Kelly, who was a lifelong friend of Jack's. Together, they remember Jack and his many accomplishments in life by reflecting on Jack's own words, taken from a 2011 interview which Galaxy Nostalgia Network had the privilege of conducting with him. We look back on Jack's beginnings in Youngstown, Ohio, his start in radio, his military service during the Second World War, and his memories of working those overnights for so many years. Such films as "Panic in the Year Zero", "Hot Rod Girl", "I was a Teenage Werewolf", "The Raven", "The House of Usher", "Beach Party", and "Slaughter's Big Rip Off", just to name a few, are still remembered. The production formulas created at AIP were effective in creating movies that appealed to younger people in the early days, and then later to a more sophisticated audience. We also look back at the Hot Rod genre of films, many which were AIP products. We are joined once again by our good friend Tom Dulaney, who's knowledge of AIP and motion pictures guides us in this episode. We remember two well-loved actresses who we lost at the end of 2016 on this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site.  The mother and daughter, Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher.  It was on December 27th, 2016 that Carrie Fisher passed away, and the following day, December 28th Debbie Reynolds followed her daughter in death.  We look back on their respective careers in motion pictures and television.  Their collective body of work is impressive, and one that provides entertainment through such movies as Singing in the Rain, How the West Was Won, When Harry Met Sally, and Post Cards From the Edge. Join us as we look back on their careers. Next we are pleased to announce the re-release of two books by Dr. V. E. "Bill" Haloulakos, father of our own George Haloulakos.  George tell us about these two books which are relevant to our Galaxy listeners.  One book is on the history of mathematics, and the other is on how some of the 1960s Sci-Fi epics provided a window into future developments in space travel and exploration, melding Science Fiction with Science Fact. From Labor Day 2019, the Galaxy Guys look back to the end of Summer, and how Labor Day signaled the upcoming end of vacation and return to school. We also look back on another tradition from those Labor Day weekends of the past, the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethons. Every year at that time, we were treated to a spectacular 20-plus hour parade of stars and guests who joined Jerry as they pitched, asked, and pleaded for donations to help those afflicted with this disease. Whether you stayed up all night watching or just watched a little while, you were bound to catch a favorite star of yours making an appearance. We remember the other holidays from this time period too. Apart from Labor Day which marked the end of Summer we had Memorial Day officially marking the start of the Summer season. And right in the middle we had Independence Day, which added a patriotic holiday to our Summers. Fifty years ago, Mister Roger's Neighborhood debuted on television. Since 1968, generations of children have benefited from Fred Rogers, who in a friendly and gentle way, presented a safe and educational environment for young children to learn and grow. On this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, we remember his wonderful television program. We look back upon his life and mission, the creation of his television program, and the legacy he created; a legacy that continues today in rebroadcasts of his program, fifteen years after his passing. All of us who have grown up from the 1960s forward came to know and love Mister Rogers. Shelly Fabares, Double-Features at The Movies, and Ford Mustang Turns 50.

On this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, we remember the brick and mortar catalog stores from the past.  In particular we recall going to Pep Boys, an iconic auto parts store that issued a regular catalog featuring all of the neat and useful items you could purchase at their stores.  Pep Boys was much more than just a place to get motor oil or a set of spark plugs, it was a place where you could get radio tubes, bicycle parts, camping gear, electric fans, or a myriad of other household things.  In addition to Pep Boys we also remember such places as Allied Radio, and the stores where you could redeem those books of trading stamps, be they S&amp;H Green Stamps or Blue Chip Stamps.  Deciding what to redeem those trading stamps for was a fun task, going through the catalog, and making decisions. Mike B shares his memories of traveling on Route 66, what the road meant to America, and how the road still exists today in some places. From the desperate people of the plains states in the Dust Bowl days, to countless American families that took Route 66 on vacations in days gone by, Route 66 still conjures up images of small towns, neon, and greasy food. We also talk about air raid sirens. Those sentries that stood watch over our towns and cities during the 50s and 60s, and were there to announce the unthinkable: an enemy air attack. Mike B, Smitty, and Mike Z recall memories of hearing the weekly and monthly tests of the sirens in earlier times. Although the implications of these sirens is a scary though to everyone, they nevertheless are a part of just about every baby boomers' memory. And finally we discuss Short-Wave radio.
