Chocobo World

For over 5 years Ultima Final Fantasy took you on a journey through the entire Final Fantasy series; from the main games that you know and love, to obscure titles such as "My Life as a Darklord". Every game was played and reviewed, every major media release was touched on, and you got to hear all the stories, tangents, and life struggles of the hosts who went through it. For years the show was supported on Patreon, and you got to see goals reached such as multiple "Megadeth" Song Covers of classic Final Fantasy songs, a phone line, and Twitch streaming for the MMO's. All of these things, along with the Patreon Invite episodes, added so much to the show.Now here we are at the end of our journey, the end of the weekly show (although occasionally returning to discuss some of the other FF-related games). The show, and our lives, must go on in a different fashion.From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for these amazing years.

I wonder what it’s like to have my dirty soiled underwear shoved so far up my rear that I’m offended by ones opinions about a topic that I downloaded hoping to have my own opinions justified.. Well here’s the thing these guys do just that! I bow to their opinions and rating orders on all things FF because there is nothing else to do in life but agree to our gods known as Ultima Final Fantasy. From playing through all the main series and spinoffs these guys give their own personal opinions while maintaining a light hearted entertaining podcast including information and the occasional song to boot.. my only gripe is that my hands are now covered in chocolate so I can’t download the next episode without messing up my phone

Haters are sweating bullets

I don’t write reviews good or bad ever but this podcast has offended me more in the first 10 minutes then all other podcast combined. From their straight up ignorance on speaking on a game they clearly know nothing about, bashing FF7 remake, Square Enix and then finally the audience who is looking forward to FF7 remake call them mouth breathers. I can’t believe these people can even call themselves fans of a FF and Square Enix. I’m deleting this podcast and never looking back and from having played the remake I can say that all of their opinions are wrong and it’s to bad I won’t be listening to hear them eat every one of their words!

This week, we have reached the long awaited Final Fantasy X review. In this first half of the episode, we discuss the development history of the game. We discuss how the game was announced at the same time as Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy X. This was the first entry in the series to feature voice acting and fully rendered images. Final Fantasy X: Part One

  Final Fantasy XII began development in the year 2000, after Final Fantasy Xi’s announcement, and would become the game with the longest development time in history when it was finally released in 2006. The development was a tumultuous one as well as an expensive one, costing 35 Million USD to create, an estimated 12 million more than FF10.     The game was to be co-directed with Hiroyuki Ito (of FF6 and FF9 fame) and a man named Yasumi Matsuno, who had previously helmed and penned the very popular game Vagrant Story as well as Final Fantasy Tactics. It was Matsuno who had come up with the story of FF12, and Ito, along with battle designer Hiroshi Tomomatsu, was well underway with the creation of his new FF battle system called the “Active Dimension system”, drawing inspiration from the plays in American football.     It was to be a truly glorious combination of Square’s creative teams.     And Square-Enix spared no expense. The art team was shipped off to Turkey to draw up design ideas for the game, and much of the early development of FF12 was based upon custom-creating the tools used to make the game, drawing upon the same game engine as FF11 to create a type of MMO experience in a single player game.     A couple things about the early iterations of Final Fantasy 12:     There was a planned 2-player mode.     There were plans to allow for recruitments of non-player characters to join in mob hunts.     There was a job system.     Basch was initially meant to be the main character of the story.       But, as I said before, FF12’s development was a troubled one.     Halfway through production, Hironobu Sakaguchi, series creator, quit Square-Enix altogether, taking a huge chunk of the Final Fantasy XII development team with him to his new company, Mistwalker. Devastated by this blow to the project, co-director Yasumi Matsuno refused to come to work for a month after the split.     Rumors are that Matsuno was extremely temperamental after that. And in 2005 Matsuno stepped down from his position, claiming illness as the cause. He has since stated that though he had in-fact been sick, he felt he had disappointed the staff, shareholders, and fans who were looking forward to the game. Matsuno would later follow Sakaguchi to Mistwalker to work on the game Terra Battle.     Series veteran Nobuo Uematsu would also bow out of this Final Fantasy, leaving Square in 2004, Uematsu’s only tracks appearing on FF12 would be Final Fantasy’s main theme and the ending song, fitting called “Kiss me Goodbye”.     Hitoshi Sakimoto was the primary replacement for Uematsu, with a handful of tracks created by Square-Enix composers, Hayato Matsuo and Masaharu Iwata.     To finish up the game, Matsuno was hurriedly replaced by Hiroshi Minagawa to salvage the game. Later, that same person would be one of the staff members sent to save another troubled FF game, FF14.     Within this environment of ever-changing staff members, there were some ever-changing aspects of the game tacked on:     The planned 2-player mode and NPC recruitment were dropped from FF12 due to hardware limitations, and the fact that trying to implement those systems would cause too many delays.     The Job system was dropped as Square-Enix decided that such a complex system would “confuse the players” as well as make the game’s development even longer. This would later be put back in, in a way, with the release of a game called “Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System”  in 2007.     And lastly, Basch was deemed as too old and too tough of a character for the target demographic of the game, and in order to make up for this, the characters Vaan and Penelo were created. Vaan starting out as a tough guy and ending up an outgoing, spunky kid.       In 2005 a playable demo of FF12 was released with the game Dragon Quest 8, and in March of 2006 the full game followed in Japan. In october of 2006, North America received the game, and in February of 2007 it was released in Europe and Australia.     Despite all the setbacks, FF12 was a large commercial success, selling over 5 million copies and becoming the 4th biggest Ps2 game of 2006. It was also a mega-hit critically, winning multiple game of the year awards, and recieving top scores by many critics.  Yet, a few years later and FF12 is nearly forgotten. Often seen as a low-point in the series, many fans of the Final Fantasy series see 12 as a disappointment. In one of the reviews for the game, Gamespot criticized it for having the weakest soundtrack in the series, and many a youtube reviewer have expressed disinterest in the weak characters of Vaan and Penelo, saying that they had nothing to contribute to the story. Series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi said he couldn’t play more than the first 20 minutes, and executive producer Akitoshi Kawazu stated that although he was happy with the perfect famitsu score of 40/40 for the game, he felt that it was far from perfect, and that the storyline did not meet expectations. Final Fantasy XII: Part One

We have finally completed Final Fantasy X-2. Here are our thoughts on the game. Later, an HD remaster would come for the Ps3 and finally the Ps4 just last year.   It was to be the first ever direct sequel to a main-series final Fantasy game. There was no plans for a sequel, but with the short video called Eternal calm (which was released with a special edition of FFX in Japan) was so well received by fans that they decided to continue X’s story. Although many people in the company were hesitant about doing a sequel to X (especially Kazushige Nojima), Yoshinori Kitase decided that his team was ready for a challenge.   Not only was their challenge to do a sequel, but to attempt to make a game centered entirely around female characters. The game was also attempting to go away from the Macho female characters most hollywood action movies star. This created a light-hearted feel for the entire game. A brain-hurting difference from the more somber Final Fantasy X.   There was also a purposeful change in theme for the game, FFX was all about gaining independence, while X2 would be about the consequences of independance.   The development time for X2 was very short compared to that of most FF games (according to Tetsuya Nomura), taking an estimated year-and-a-half less time than the development of X. This was due to all of the reuse of many character models, it’s not like they had to start from scratch.   The music would be composed by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi (composers for the much-maligned game “The Bouncer”). The most famous song from the game (one of 2 pop songs) was the ballad “1000 words” sung by sung by Kuni Koda in Japan, and Jade Villalon for the English edition.   X2 would go on to sell 1.94 million copies in Japan (the highest selling game of that year) and 1.85 Million in America. It was also well acclaimed (more so in Japan) for it’s departure from the Final Fantasy form, it’s focus on side-quests, it’s political background, and it’s overall uniqueness from anything players had seen before.   But I ask you, does unique really mean good?   STORY   So… The uh story starts out at a fucking terrible pop concert with the “what can I do for you?” song blaring out of our TV speakers. Someone who looks like Yuna is singing terribly and YRP comes to save...Yuna’s garment grid from a disgusting looking woman named Lablanc.   What is a garment grid? YRP stands for Yuna, Rikku, and a new smoking hot emo chick named “Paine”, and they make up the Gullwings (y’know, not enough nicknames for the group). They are a group of sphere hunters searching the world for rare spheres… and stealing them from people who they think shouldn’t have them.   When Yuna finds a sphere with what looks like Tidus on it, she sphere hunts even harder for the missing pieces. Also on the sphere, a dangerous weapon, the vegnagun, is shown to be hidden somewhere in spira. A weapon powerful enough to destroy Spira, apparently.   In the midst of all the sphere hunting and the Leblanc Syndicate (functioning like a lame team rocket) attempting to snatch the spheres from under our heroes noses, are the political factions of the Youth league and New Yevon. The Youth league, young ruffian sphere hunters looking to educate the world about the past; New Yevon, holding onto the teachings of the faith that failed them in FFX. THese two fractions never really do any harm to one another or fight for power in any real world sense, but hey, that’s ffx2.   With the new threat of Vegnagun, Nooj (leader of the Youth League), sets off to destroy the Vegnagun, but is possessed by Shuyin (the Tidus-looking dude). Chasing after him, Yuna falls into the farplane where the Spirit of Shuyin reunites with whom he thinks is “Lenne”, apparently a famous popstar Shuyin was unable to save with the power of Vegnagun from the Zanarkand he belongs to… 1000 years in the past.   A quick aside, who is this shuyin guy and why does he look like Tidus? (not actually explained in this game, but we can figure it out)   The reason Shuyin mistakes Yuna for Lenne is because Yuna is wearing her dress sphere. Soon Yuna begins to relive Lenne’s memories, and eventually uses her singing ability and songwriting skills to bring the people of Spira together for…… a concert.   After this, Yuna, The Lablanc syndicate, members of The Youth League, as well as members of New Yevon, team up to finally destroy Vegnagun and the spirit of Shuyin who tries to control it.   After all is said and done, Spira is saved, and The Youth League compromises with New Yevon.   The end?   Taken from neoseeker.com:   Good Ending As Yuna is walking in the flower field in the Farplane, press "X" and Yuna will hear a whistle. She looks around to hear where it's coming from. That little Fayth guy will appear and tell you that he's heard your wish to see Tidus again. He will then ask you if you want to see him again and you have to answer. If you really hate Tidus and answer "I'm fine with the way it is," Yuna will tell the Fayth that she doesn't need to see him because he's in her heart. The Fayth will disappear and you'll just get the Normal Ending. Assuming that you chose "I want to be with him" the Fayth will tell you that he'll try to bring him back, but there's no promises. Yuna will walk away and you'll see the cut scene for the Normal Ending. After the credits run through, you'll see the scene at the end of FFX where Tidus is in the water. This time, he'll emerge outside Besaid Island. He whistles and swims towards the shore, at which time the Celsius comes roaring in, and Yuna jumps out and embraces Tidus. Yuna asks if he's the real thing to which he answers, "what do you think?" Yuna nods in agreement. Paine and Rikku look on, smiling for their friend from the Celsius. As they're hugging,Wakka shouts out from the shore. Most of the population of the Island is there witnessing their reunion, including Lulu and the new baby Vidina. Yuna and Tidus agree to go meet them and start running towards the shore. Tidus tells Yuna that she's changed. She responds by saying that a lot of things have happened. Tidus yells out that he wants to hear about it. The camera zooms out to a fade. Explanation? (a guy from reddit)   I think it's because the fayth felt indebted to Yuna because she released them from their dreaming at the end of X, and she also saved them at the end of X-2. Because the little boy/Bahamut asks Yuna if she wants to meet someone, and that's how you unlock the "Good" ending. So maybe he and the rest of Yuna's aeon's fayth dreamed up Tidus again? We have finally completed Final Fantasy X-2. Here are our thoughts on the game. Final Fantasy X-2, Part One

This week, Kaleb and Joe begin their review of Final Fantasy XIII. Enjoy! As we know, Final Fantasy XIII is the start of the Fabula Nova Crystallis collection of Final Fantasy games, and was the first game Square used their internally developed Crystal Tools game engine with. This tool was created to further unify the game’s development, and bring the originally PlayStation 3 exclusive to the Xbox 360 and Wii consoles. This system was conceived by the success of the Final Fantasy VII Tech Demo, which also spurred Square Enix to release Final Fantasy XIII on the PlayStation 3, instead of the originally planned release on Playstation 2.   The game received received mostly positive reviews from video game publications, praising the graphics, presentation, and battle system. The story received mixed reviews, but the linearity would be the centerpiece of most criticisms for Final Fantasy XIII, especially when compared to the rest of the series.   Development for Final Fantasy XIII began in 2004, just after the Release of Final Fantasy X-2 International + Last Mission in Japan. Director Motomu Toriyama and Kazushige Nojima conceived ideas for the stories plotline over the first year. It was Nojima that thought up the crystal mythology that is the basis of the series, and the roles of the fal’Cie and l’Cie. Toriyama then created the story around the mythology. His goal was to show the characters at the mercy of a predetermined, unjust fate. He also wanted to create a group who belonged together, but clashed heavily. To go about this, they designed each of the sory’s thirteen chapters to focus on different members of the party. The structure of the narrative started to come together in 2006, when Daisuke Watanabe joined the team. Watanabe, as you may recall, filled in for Matsuno left the Final Fantasy XII development team due to sickness. Watanabe was given a rough outline of the first eight chapters, including necessary scenes that had to stay, and was told to strengthen Toriyama’s script. An example of what this entailed, is he would get a document that simply said “Snow and Hope reconcile”, and would decide how the scene would play out, and write his scenario accordingly. Watanabe also did some adjusting for characters. He felt that Lightning shouldn’t be a reliable and calm leader, and went with the more irritable, enraged Lightning we know. This was done to capture the confusion and unease that the characters no doubt would feel in light of their situations. Toriyama felt that the Sazh suicide scene was too dark, so elements such as the Chocobo chick helped maintain a good balance within the games overall scope.   The developers of Final Fantasy XIII were divided into multiple teams, where each team would be assigned with a specific area of the game. XIII’s staff included many members who worked on previous entries in the series. The games Director, Motomu Toriyama worked on X and X-2, Kitase, as we know, worked on V through VIII, and Nomura was back as the main character designer. Since XIII was the first Final Fantasy game for the PlayStation 3, the crew wanted the game to have the same impact that VII and X had upon their release. Their sales goal was to hit 5 million copies sold, and Toriyami wanted the game to be the “ultimate single player RPG.”   Although I can’t say that XIII is the Ultimate………..single palyer RPG, It did meet, and exceed, their sales goal. As of now, Final Fantasy XIII has sold 6.71 million copies between the Ps3 and Xbox 360, making it the fourth biggest game in the series. It sold 1.7 Million copies in Japan, making it the fastest selling game in the franchise. The games budget would top out at Number 22 on the most expensive games to make list at 65+ million.   Final Fantasy XIII was released in December 2009 in Japan, and March of 2010 for the rest of the world. The game includes a very quick paced battle system, and an upgrading system similar to the Sphere Grid called Crystalarium. Players also customize paradigms, a sort of class assignment for your three person party, and the outcome of the battles heavily rely on the player “staggering” their opponents. This is essentially finding out what weakens them, and getting them into a critical state where more damage is dealt.   The character is controlled via a third person perspective. The character is also given a 360 degree camera movement. The entirety of the game is scaled relative to the characters, rather than a massive version of the character roaming a miniature terrain. Square brought back the Bestiary from Final Fatnasy XII, and also provided a way to level up ones weapons through components obtained, or bought at a save kiosk. Interestingly enough, the Final Fantasy XIII Ultimate Hits International version of the game, released in Japan, has an easy mode. This is interesting, because the company has talked about being concerned that their games are too difficult for us North Americans.   The battle system is similar to Final Fantasy XII in some ways. Most noticeably in that the character can approach or avoid enemies in the field. When the player touches an enemy, the screen transitions from the map to a battle screen similar to ones from previous entries in the series. XIII also only allows the use of three characters in battle, and uses a variant of Active Time Battle that we’ve all become accustomed to. The part where this game differs the most, is with the secondary characters. The player only controls the party leader, and the other two characters are controlled by AI. There is an extremely useful Autobattle function, where the game will automatically select actions to perform. The game also fully heals characters after a battle is complete. This makes the game sound super easy, right? No. You’re wrong. SO FUCKING WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Every enemy has a chain counter. This counter starts at 100, and each enemy has different effects on creatures. Generally, black magic spells will make the chain counter jump very quickly, but the bar will quickly reset if not supplemented with a physical attack, or debuff. Once the meter is filled, the enemy will enter a Stagger state. This form is generally quite susceptible to physical damage, and the player can even launch most enemies into the air, rendering them attackless. These stagger states can be manipulated by assigning Paradigms to your party.   Paradigms are used to assign different roles to different characters. The six paradigms are Commando, Ravager, Medic, Saboteur, Sentinel, and Synergist. The Commando deals physical damage, Ravager is designated for black magic, Medics perform healing spells, Saboteurs attack enemies with various debuff spells, such as slow or deprotect, Sentinels raise a parties defence, and Synergists are used to assign buffs to your characters such as protect and haste. These classes can, and in many cases, must be quickly changed throughout battles to quickly defeat enemies. This gives Final Fantasy XIII a refreshingly fast battle system, and also leads to many game overs on non boss enemies.   Each character has a specific Eidolon that they can summon in battle. Only the party leader can select this skill, however, so the summoned creature depends on the leader. You can trigger a Gestalt mode for the Eidelons, and they will transform into a vehicle that the player then rides on during battle….. Watanabe was given a rough outline of the first eight chapters, including necessary scenes that had to stay, and was told to strengthen Toriyama’s script. An example of what this entailed, is he would get a document that simply said “Snow and Hope reconcile”, and would decide how the scene would play out, and write his scenario accordingly. Watanabe also did some adjusting for characters. He felt that Lightning shouldn’t be a reliable and calm leader, and went with the more irritable, enraged Lightning we know. This was done to capture the confusion and unease that the characters no doubt would feel in light of their situations. Toriyama felt that the Sazh suicide scene was too dark, so elements such as the Chocobo chick helped maintain a good balance within the games overall scope. The developers of Final Fantasy XIII were divided into multiple teams, where each team would be assigned with a specific area of the game. XIII’s staff included many members who worked on previous entries in the series. The games Director, Motomu Toriyama worked on X and X-2, Kitase, as we know, worked on V through VIII, and Nomura was back as the main character designer. Since XIII was the first Final Fantasy game for the PlayStation 3, the crew wanted the game to have the same impact that VII and X had upon their release. Their sales goal was to hit 5 million copies sold, and Toriyami wanted the game to be the “ultimate single player RPG.” Although I can’t say that XIII is the Ultimate………..single palyer RPG, It did meet, and exceed, their sales goal. As of now, Final Fantasy XIII has sold 6.71 million copies between the Ps3 and Xbox 360, making it the fourth biggest game in the series. It sold 1.7 Million copies in Japan, making it the fastest selling game in the franchise. The games budget would top out at Number 22 on the most expensive games to make list at 65+ million. Final Fantasy XIII was released in December 2009 in Japan, and March of 2010 for the rest of the world. The game includes a very quick paced battle system, and an upgrading system similar to the Sphere Grid called Crystalarium. Players also customize paradigms, a sort of class assignment for your three person party, and the outcome of the battles heavily rely on the player “staggering” their opponents. This is essentially finding out what weakens them, and getting them into a critical state where more damage is dealt. The character is controlled via a third person perspective. The character is also given a 360 degree camera movement. The entirety of the game is scaled relative to the characters, rather than a massive version of the character roaming a miniature terrain. Square brought back the Bestiary from Final Fatnasy XII, and also provided a way to level up ones weapons through components obtained, or bought at a save kiosk. Interestingly enough, the Final Fantasy XIII Ultimate Hits International version of the game, released in Japan, has an easy mode. This is interesting, because the company has talked about being concerned that their games are too difficult for us North Americans. The battle system is similar to Final Fantasy XII in some ways. Most noticeably in that the character can approach or avoid enemies in the field. When the player touches an enemy, the screen transitions from the map to a battle screen similar to ones from previous entries in the series. XIII also only allows the use of three characters in battle, and uses a variant of Active Time Battle that we’ve all become accustomed to. The part where this game differs the most, is with the secondary characters. The player only controls the party leader, and the other two characters are controlled by AI. There is an extremely useful Autobattle function, where the game will automatically select actions to perform. The game also fully heals characters after a battle is complete. This makes the game sound super easy, right? No. You’re wrong. SO FUCKING WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every enemy has a chain counter. This counter starts at 100, and each enemy has different effects on creatures. Generally, black magic spells will make the chain counter jump very quickly, but the bar will quickly reset if not supplemented with a physical attack, or debuff. Once the meter is filled, the enemy will enter a Stagger state. This form is generally quite susceptible to physical damage, and the player can even launch most enemies into the air, rendering them attackless. These stagger states can be manipulated by assigning Paradigms to your party. Paradigms are used to assign different roles to different characters. The six paradigms are Commando, Ravager, Medic, Saboteur, Sentinel, and Synergist. The Commando deals physical damage, Ravager is designated for black magic, Medics perform healing spells, Saboteurs attack enemies with various debuff spells, such as slow or deprotect, Sentinels raise a parties defence, and Synergists are used to assign buffs to your characters such as protect and haste. These classes can, and in many cases, must be quickly changed throughout battles to quickly defeat enemies. This gives Final Fantasy XIII a refreshingly fast battle system, and also leads to many game overs on non boss enemies. Each character has a specific Eidolon that they can summon in battle. Only the party leader can select this skill, however, so the summoned creature depends on the leader. You can trigger a Gestalt mode for the Eidelons, and they will transform into a vehicle that the player then rides on during battle….. Final Fantasy VI

This episode picks up right where the last one left off. We discuss the gameplay aspects of Final Fantasy X, including the battle system, sphere grid, side quests and more. We move on to discuss the numerous mini games that Final Fantasy X features, including the infamous chocobo catcher and lighning dodging minigames. We also discuss the games artwork and character design, as well as it's top of the notch soundtrack from Nobou Uematsu. We also discuss the addition of the dark aeons to the HD remastered version that we played, and of course add it to our final ranking! Enjoy this second half of our beefy Final Fantasy X review. Final Fantasy X: Part Two

Join us for an even bigger, girthier part two! As we know, Final Fantasy XIII is the start of the Fabula Nova Crystallis collection of Final Fantasy games, and was the first game Square used their internally developed Crystal Tools game engine with. This tool was created to further unify the game’s development, and bring the originally PlayStation 3 exclusive to the Xbox 360 and Wii consoles. This system was conceived by the success of the Final Fantasy VII Tech Demo, which also spurred Square Enix to release Final Fantasy XIII on the PlayStation 3, instead of the originally planned release on Playstation 2.   The game received received mostly positive reviews from video game publications, praising the graphics, presentation, and battle system. The story received mixed reviews, but the linearity would be the centerpiece of most criticisms for Final Fantasy XIII, especially when compared to the rest of the series.   Development for Final Fantasy XIII began in 2004, just after the Release of Final Fantasy X-2 International + Last Mission in Japan. Director Motomu Toriyama and Kazushige Nojima conceived ideas for the stories plotline over the first year. It was Nojima that thought up the crystal mythology that is the basis of the series, and the roles of the fal’Cie and l’Cie. Toriyama then created the story around the mythology. His goal was to show the characters at the mercy of a predetermined, unjust fate. He also wanted to create a group who belonged together, but clashed heavily. To go about this, they designed each of the sory’s thirteen chapters to focus on different members of the party. The structure of the narrative started to come together in 2006, when Daisuke Watanabe joined the team. Watanabe, as you may recall, filled in for Matsuno left the Final Fantasy XII development team due to sickness. Watanabe was given a rough outline of the first eight chapters, including necessary scenes that had to stay, and was told to strengthen Toriyama’s script. An example of what this entailed, is he would get a document that simply said “Snow and Hope reconcile”, and would decide how the scene would play out, and write his scenario accordingly. Watanabe also did some adjusting for characters. He felt that Lightning shouldn’t be a reliable and calm leader, and went with the more irritable, enraged Lightning we know. This was done to capture the confusion and unease that the characters no doubt would feel in light of their situations. Toriyama felt that the Sazh suicide scene was too dark, so elements such as the Chocobo chick helped maintain a good balance within the games overall scope.   The developers of Final Fantasy XIII were divided into multiple teams, where each team would be assigned with a specific area of the game. XIII’s staff included many members who worked on previous entries in the series. The games Director, Motomu Toriyama worked on X and X-2, Kitase, as we know, worked on V through VIII, and Nomura was back as the main character designer. Since XIII was the first Final Fantasy game for the PlayStation 3, the crew wanted the game to have the same impact that VII and X had upon their release. Their sales goal was to hit 5 million copies sold, and Toriyami wanted the game to be the “ultimate single player RPG.”   Although I can’t say that XIII is the Ultimate………..single palyer RPG, It did meet, and exceed, their sales goal. As of now, Final Fantasy XIII has sold 6.71 million copies between the Ps3 and Xbox 360, making it the fourth biggest game in the series. It sold 1.7 Million copies in Japan, making it the fastest selling game in the franchise. The games budget would top out at Number 22 on the most expensive games to make list at 65+ million.   Final Fantasy XIII was released in December 2009 in Japan, and March of 2010 for the rest of the world. The game includes a very quick paced battle system, and an upgrading system similar to the Sphere Grid called Crystalarium. Players also customize paradigms, a sort of class assignment for your three person party, and the outcome of the battles heavily rely on the player “staggering” their opponents. This is essentially finding out what weakens them, and getting them into a critical state where more damage is dealt.   The character is controlled via a third person perspective. The character is also given a 360 degree camera movement. The entirety of the game is scaled relative to the characters, rather than a massive version of the character roaming a miniature terrain. Square brought back the Bestiary from Final Fatnasy XII, and also provided a way to level up ones weapons through components obtained, or bought at a save kiosk. Interestingly enough, the Final Fantasy XIII Ultimate Hits International version of the game, released in Japan, has an easy mode. This is interesting, because the company has talked about being concerned that their games are too difficult for us North Americans.   The battle system is similar to Final Fantasy XII in some ways. Most noticeably in that the character can approach or avoid enemies in the field. When the player touches an enemy, the screen transitions from the map to a battle screen similar to ones from previous entries in the series. XIII also only allows the use of three characters in battle, and uses a variant of Active Time Battle that we’ve all become accustomed to. The part where this game differs the most, is with the secondary characters. The player only controls the party leader, and the other two characters are controlled by AI. There is an extremely useful Autobattle function, where the game will automatically select actions to perform. The game also fully heals characters after a battle is complete. This makes the game sound super easy, right? No. You’re wrong. SO FUCKING WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Every enemy has a chain counter. This counter starts at 100, and each enemy has different effects on creatures. Generally, black magic spells will make the chain counter jump very quickly, but the bar will quickly reset if not supplemented with a physical attack, or debuff. Once the meter is filled, the enemy will enter a Stagger state. This form is generally quite susceptible to physical damage, and the player can even launch most enemies into the air, rendering them attackless. These stagger states can be manipulated by assigning Paradigms to your party.   Paradigms are used to assign different roles to different characters. The six paradigms are Commando, Ravager, Medic, Saboteur, Sentinel, and Synergist. The Commando deals physical damage, Ravager is designated for black magic, Medics perform healing spells, Saboteurs attack enemies with various debuff spells, such as slow or deprotect, Sentinels raise a parties defence, and Synergists are used to assign buffs to your characters such as protect and haste. These classes can, and in many cases, must be quickly changed throughout battles to quickly defeat enemies. This gives Final Fantasy XIII a refreshingly fast battle system, and also leads to many game overs on non boss enemies.   Each character has a specific Eidolon that they can summon in battle. Only the party leader can select this skill, however, so the summoned creature depends on the leader. You can trigger a Gestalt mode for the Eidelons, and they will transform into a vehicle that the player then rides on during battle….. Final Fantasy XIII: Part Two

Censorship in Final Fantasy

Development - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a tactical role playing game developed and published by Square Co for the Nintendo Advance. Released on February 14, 2003 in Japan and September 8, 2003 in the US. It was also released on the Wii-U Virtual Console on January 28, 2016 for Europe, and on March 30, 2016 for US and Japan, but you would have to be one of the thirteen people who had bought a Wii-U by that time. The game isn’t a direct sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics, which is something neither of us knew coming in. It does share several themes and gameplay traits, while bringing a few new ones to the table as well. The game’s development began when Square announced it’s publishing agreement with Nintendo. Advance was developed by recently acquired employees of Quest Corporation. You may recognize them from the famous Tactics Ogre series. The game was initially thought to be a port of Tactics, but features a completely separate storyline. Japan players received a radio drama that broadcast an expansion to the story on Japanese radio stations from January 2003 to late March 2003. The game was mainly scored by Hitoshi Sakimoto, Kaori Ohkoshi and Ayako Saso. You’ll remember Sakimoto from Final Fantasy XII, Tactics Ogre, and Vagrant Story; oh, and a little game called Revenant Wings. The game’s soundtrack was made purchasable on February 19, 2003, and features a whopping 74 tracks. Tactics Advance has sold more than one million copies between NA and Europe, and netted Square 22 million dollars by August 2006. The game received positive reviews, and has an 87.64 percent on Metacritic. It is hailed as one of the best games on the Gameboy Advance.   Setting/Story - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance centers around four children, named Marche, Mewt, Ritz, and Doned, who live in a town called St. Ivalice. They are transported to a realm called Ivalice after discovering a magical tome. The story follows Marche as he navigates the dream world of his friends Ritz Malheur and Mewt Randell. Let me repeat that; You follow TWO PEOPLE’S BAD SUSHI DREAMS AT ONCE. Your little brother Doned is also here, and I always voiced him as Jimmy from South Park whenever he was on screen due to his wheelchair. Good times. Mewt is basically scarred from the death of his mother, and upon having a bad bit of curry from his local Indian Restaraunt, changes the world for his friends upon reading the aforementioned book. Ritz is a platinum blonde who absolutely hates being called blondy locks or whatever. Your younger brother is also a super large fan of Final Fantasy, which is super meta and something the game suffers for in my opinion. Fantasy Ivalice is a reincarnation of Mewt’s memories from a Final Fantasy game. Marche wakes up alone, and begins his quest for home posthaste. He eventually realizes that life is way better managing a war tribe known as Clan Centurion, but is still longing for home. Marche soon realizes that his entire town has been dragged into this new world which is dominated by adventuring clans and his buddy Mewt, who has somehow managed to become king. (His dream, but come on).  Mewt isn’t teased like he is in real life, Ritz isn’t an albino, Doned is still Jimmy/Timmy but he can walk, and Marche is a beast. Cid, Mewt’s Father, is the Judge Master of the region. Marche then sets out to destroy the crystals that bound this imaginary world together. These crystals are bound by summons called Totema, and feature unique battles to defeat. One of the final bosses, named Llednar Twem, is an actual manifestation of all of Mewt’s Negative Emotions, or Recessive Genes if you’re a fan of Metal Gear Solid. In the end, we find out that Mewt’s mother is really Li-Grim, which comes from the book they had read that later manifested itself as Mewt’s mother, Queen Remedi. Apparently there are a couple side plots, one including a foreign crime ring and another where Marche never leaves Ivalice and becomes the next in line for Judge Magister Cid’s sword. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

This week, we review the Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV anime. We dive into the content that we liked, and discuss whether or not it served its purpose; making us excited for Final Fantasy XV. Also, we finally watched Kingsglaive! Look forward to that review soon! Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV   Brotherhood is a web based animation series directed by Soichi Masui and written by Yuniko Ayana. The series was co-produced by A-1 Pictures, and obviously Square Enix. A-1 also helped Square Enix with the On the Way to a Smile animated film. The setting and story are based on the upcoming Final Fantasy XV, which is still connected to the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries. The series documents events and details of the main characters of Final Fantasy XV, and was originally announced during Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV on March 30th 2016. We all know that Brotherhood, combined with Kingsglaive, is part of a multimedia rollout of Final Fantasy XV. They chose this format because they didn’t feel like creating additional games to cover the added story content. They ended up going with the anime format due to Kingsglaive already in the works. Final Fantasy X-2.5: The Truth

Development: Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, known as Final Fantasy Gaiden in Japan, is a Role Playing Game developed by Matrix Software and published by Square Enix on October 29, 2009 in Japan, and October 5th, 2010 in the States. You may remember Matrix Software from their IOS ports of Final Fantasy II, IV, V, VI,  After Years, and even Dragon Quest V. This is the second Final Fantasy game to wield the Gaiden, or spinoff title, in Japan; The other being the aforereviewed Final Fantasy Adventure. The game’s directors were Takashi Tokita and Hiroaki Yabuta. Tokita you may remember as the director of Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve. He also worked as lead designer for Final Fantasy IV. The game was produced by Tomoya Asano, the lead artist was Akihiko Yoshida; Yoshida worked on background art and main character design for the Ivalice games, where Mizuta worked on FFXI with Uematsu, and that god awful Parasite Eve 2. The development team had begun to consider a sequel to this game, and that’s why we’re going to play Bravely Default; which is what that “sequel” eventually became. The entire game was meant to be a throwback to the original titles in the Final Fantasy series, and you can definitely tell. The game featured an interesting storybook style art design, similar to Chocobo’s Tales, and also features a pretty bitchin version of the job system from FF III and V. The development team looked to DQ games, and other popular NES era RPG’s for inspiration as well as previous FF titles.   Plot: The game starts out in the city of Horne with our main hero Brandt. Brandt is presenting himself to the king to enter manhood, and discovers that the Princess, Aire, has been taken by the Witch of the North, named Louhi. Along the way, Brandt meets up with his moody friend Jusqua and the princess’ personal bodyguard, and savior of us all, Yunita. Together they journey to the witche’s house, and eventually slay Louhi. When we trudge back to Horne, we find that the entire town has been turned to stone by some curse, and the king is missing. This is when our little fellowshiop breaks for the time being. Brandt and Yunita try to restore Horne’s villagers, while Jusqua and Aire flee to Liberte, a seafaring town. Brandt and Yunita meet a fellow named Krinjh in a nearby desert, who leads them to the magic kingdom of Guera. The King of Guera asks them to deal with the fucking Sandman, since Spiderman is busy, and you agree. But of course, he annihalates you, because you need water spells and the LEADER ORDERS A FUCKING FREEZE ON WATER SPELL SALES! Anyway, you win the fight, but the sand creature is revealed to be Araidne, who Krinjh runs away with. Aire meets up with a fairy named Lilibelle, and gets turned into a cat. Aire leaves Jusqua’s grumpy ass behind, and finds Brandt, who also left Yunita behind for some reason… Anyway, they head to Arbor forest, where the Queen of the forest turns Brandt into a plant, because she doesn’t trust humans after the events of Ferngully 1, and dare I say 2. Aire then teams up with a mouse named Tortehhhh to find an Animal Staff in order to turn Brandt into a dog, thus making him more trustworthy. But before we get this taken care of, we must defeat Arbaroc; the guardian of Arbor. We knock him out, and the Queen of Arbor turns the Animal Staff into the Transformation Staff, which allows us to go transspecial with a mere three menu clicks. We then first learn of Rolan, who searches for the Dark Towe…. Wait, no. He’s just a dude from Spelvia who may know how to help Horne. The two animals Aire and Brandt climb the great tree of the arbor and leap to the super FF-esque floating island of Spelvia, but Aire is the only one who makes it across. Jusqua finds a regular cat, who he mistakes for Aire somehow, and travels to Urbeth; finding Yunita and a sorcerer who claims to be able to lift the curse from “Aire”. We earn some dough by completing some quests for the locals, and then we find out that the dirty sorcerer was nothing more than a con artist, who promptly escapes to the six teraflop city of Invidia. Jusqua leaves warrior princess Yunita behind and pursues the sorcerer on a boat. He’s soon reunited with Brandt, and learns that Aire was with him the whole time. When our two heroes arrive in Invidia, they meet up with a girl named Rekoteh who helps them get the dragon harp, which allows the party to summon a dragon to fly to Spelvia. Yunita has climbed the tower to the Sky to reach the town, and meets up with Aire as they arrive. We then visit Rolan, who also dislikes humans, and has locked himself away in solitude. Then we get a sweet sequence where Yunita and Aire travel into Rolan’s unconcious mind with the help of the Witch of the Sky to destroy the monsters controlling him. This, however, causes Rolan to ulneash the darkness that was locked away inside him, and warp the very fabric of reality. Ardyn, anyone?? At this point, the heroes search for the Weapons of Light to save the world from the Dark Lord that the ancient hero Rolan defeated and sealed away. In the kingdom of Guera’s past, Krinj is a servant of their past king, who turns out to be Asmodeus, or as Joe and I call him, Assdemon, the demon of lust; and he lusts after your juicy asscheeks, to be sure. Yunita prevents his evil plans from being completed by using the Merkmal, or Merkin, to reveal his true identity, and then the group fights him, gets fucking wrecked, and darkness wins the day. 40 times. Until eventually he doesn’t fuck you over instantly, and you defeat him. Krinjh then rewards you with the Shield of Light, which I actually didn’t take at first, which led me to be lost for about three hours last night. Krinjh eventually becomes king, and makes peace with the nearby nations. In Liberte’s past, and artist is looking to create the most beautiful piece of art ever, and wants to incorporate Lillibelle into it. A bunch of pirates steal the work, and we find out they were being possessed. ONce we free them, we awaken Cetus, an ancient whale, and use him to defeat Leviathan, the demon of envy. Urubeth was once a city of faith, but a recent plague turned it into a commerce town. Thazund, one of the high merchants of the town, has a daughter who has fallen ill to the plague. His punishment is being turned into a mouse, and he is the catalyst for the Arbor Queen’s distaste towards humans. Belphagor attempts to posses Aebaroc to destroy Arbor. Originally, Belphagor wins, but our time warp intervention prevents it. But not before he fucks you over, and over, and over, and over again. With Belfaggot dead, we receive the spell Lux; and my god is it useful. Now we turn to Invidia, home of the Ruskies. We help the daughter of Rekoteh, and journey to the Sun Temple to defeat Mammon, the demon of greed. Once we return to the village, spring finally arrives, and we are awarded with the Armor of Light. We also visit Spelvia in the past, and save Rolan from the darkness. We dive into his soul, and defeat Lucifer himfuckingself, the demon of pride, and free Rolan’s soul. He awards us with the Sword of Light. We finally make it back to Horne, who is suffering a drought. This extreme situation called for extreme measures, and the town voted to ask the witch Louhi for help. This is also, oddly, the day of Aire’s birth. Her father agrees to give her away to break the seal on the legendary black magic. Our defiance of the deal by saving Aire, and killing Louhi, caused the curse in the first place.We eventually use the lamp of truth to question the shitlord king of this place, and find out that he’s Satan, demon of wrath. Brandt’s parrot shows up, and reveals himself as the actual mayor. This is when we find out that we were played in the beginning, and serving evil. The king thanks us, and gives us the overpowered black magic Desolator. Once our for heroe’s have the weapons of light, they use Cletus to enter the Dark World, and not the one from that crap Thor movie, either. We, of fucking course, lose all of our jobs, and have to earn them back by defeating all the douche bosses that the game offered; first and foremost are Assdemon and Belfaggot. This is a very similar idea to FFVIII’s final dungeon, tbh. We then face off against Chaos, who shatters our job creating crystal, and still loses to us. But again, not after making me spend hour after hour journeying to fight him again and again. We then embark on our world tour, returning the sacred weapons. Everything is good to go, and we finally return home. Development: Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, known as Final Fantasy Gaiden in Japan, is a Role Playing Game developed by Matrix Software and published by Square Enix on October 29, 2009 in Japan, and October 5th, 2010 in the States. You may remember Matrix Software from their IOS ports of Final Fantasy II, IV, V, VI,  After Years, and even Dragon Quest V. This is the second Final Fantasy game to wield the Gaiden, or spinoff title, in Japan; The other being the aforereviewed Final Fantasy Adventure. The game’s directors were Takashi Tokita and Hiroaki Yabuta. Tokita you may remember as the director of Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve. He also worked as lead designer for Final Fantasy IV. The game was produced by Tomoya Asano, the lead artist was Akihiko Yoshida; Yoshida worked on background art and main character design for the Ivalice games, where Mizuta worked on FFXI with Uematsu, and that god awful Parasite Eve 2. The development team had begun to consider a sequel to this game, and that’s why we’re going to play Bravely Default; which is what that “sequel” eventually became. The entire game was meant to be a throwback to the original titles in the Final Fantasy series, and you can definitely tell. The game featured an interesting storybook style art design, similar to Chocobo’s Tales, and also features a pretty bitchin version of the job system from FF III and V. The development team looked to DQ games, and other popular NES era RPG’s for inspiration as well as previous FF titles. Plot: The game starts out in the city of Horne with our main hero Brandt. Brandt is presenting himself to the king to enter manhood, and discovers that the Princess, Aire, has been taken by the Witch of the North, named Louhi. Along the way, Brandt meets up with his moody friend Jusqua and the princess’ personal bodyguard, and savior of us all, Yunita. Together they journey to the witche’s house, and eventually slay Louhi. When we trudge back to Horne, we find that the entire town has been turned to stone by some curse, and the king is missing. This is when our little fellowshiop breaks for the time being. Brandt and Yunita try to restore Horne’s villagers, while Jusqua and Aire flee to Liberte, a seafaring town. Brandt and Yunita meet a fellow named Krinjh in a nearby desert, who leads them to the magic kingdom of Guera. The King of Guera asks them to deal with the fucking Sandman, since Spiderman is busy, and you agree. But of course, he annihalates you, because you need water spells and the LEADER ORDERS A FUCKING FREEZE ON WATER SPELL SALES! Anyway, you win the fight, but the sand creature is revealed to be Araidne, who Krinjh runs away with. Aire meets up with a fairy named Lilibelle, and gets turned into a cat. Aire leaves Jusqua’s grumpy ass behind, and finds Brandt, who also left Yunita behind for some reason… Anyway, they head to Arbor forest, where the Queen of the forest turns Brandt into a plant, because she doesn’t trust humans after the events of Ferngully 1, and dare I say 2. Aire then teams up with a mouse named Tortehhhh to find an Animal Staff in order to turn Brandt into a dog, thus making him more trustworthy. But before we get this taken care of, we must defeat Arbaroc; the guardian of Arbor. We knock him out, and the Queen of Arbor turns the Animal Staff into the Transformation Staff, which allows us to go transspecial with a mere three menu clicks. We then first learn of Rolan, who searches for the Dark Towe…. Wait, no. He’s just a dude from Spelvia who may know how to help Horne. The two animals Aire and Brandt climb the great tree of the arbor and leap to the super FF-esque floating island of Spelvia, but Aire is the only one who makes it across. Jusqua finds a regular cat, who he mistakes for Aire somehow, and travels to Urbeth; finding Yunita and a sorcerer who claims to be able to lift the curse from “Aire”. We earn some dough by completing some quests for the locals, and then we find out that the dirty sorcerer was nothing more than a con artist, who promptly escapes to the six teraflop city of Invidia. Jusqua leaves warrior princess Yunita behind and pursues the sorcerer on a boat. He’s soon reunited with Brandt, and learns that Aire was with him the whole time. When our two heroes arrive in Invidia, they meet up with a girl named Rekoteh who helps them get the dragon harp, which allows the party to summon a dragon to fly to Spelvia. Yunita has climbed the tower to the Sky to reach the town, and meets up with Aire as they arrive. We then visit Rolan, who also dislikes humans, and has locked himself away in solitude. Then we get a sweet sequence where Yunita and Aire travel into Rolan’s unconcious mind with the help of the Witch of the Sky to destroy the monsters controlling him. This, however, causes Rolan to ulneash the darkness that was locked away inside him, and warp the very fabric of reality. Ardyn, anyone?? At this point, the heroes search for the Weapons of Light to save the world from the Dark Lord that the ancient hero Rolan defeated and sealed away. In the kingdom of Guera’s past, Krinj is a servant of their past king, who turns out to be Asmodeus, or as Joe and I call him, Assdemon, the demon of lust; and he lusts after your juicy asscheeks, to be sure. Yunita prevents his evil plans from being completed by using the Merkmal, or Merkin, to reveal his true identity, and then the group fights him, gets fucking wrecked, and darkness wins the day. 40 times. Until eventually he doesn’t fuck you over instantly, and you defeat him. Krinjh then rewards you with the Shield of Light, which I actually didn’t take at first, which led me to be lost for about three hours last night. Krinjh eventually becomes king, and makes peace with the nearby nations. In Liberte’s past, and artist is looking to create the most beautiful piece of art ever, and wants to incorporate Lillibelle into it. A bunch of pirates steal the work, and we find out they were being possessed. ONce we free them, we awaken Cetus, an ancient whale, and use him to defeat Leviathan, the demon of envy.
