The almost militant battle of how to best teach reading has been waged over the last 150+ years with proponents from both sides being adamant about their recommendations.  As the reading curriculum pendulum has swung back and forth from phonics to sight to phonics the controversy roars on with little attention given to anything except technique. This narrow view of reading has resulted in millions of individuals being diagnosed with dyslexia and other reading and language delays. With the introduction of learning styles even more reading techniques abound.  Phonics is an auditory approach to reading. One must hold each sound in auditory short-term memory long enough to get the word “sounded out”. If the child’s auditory short-term memory (processing) is low, phonics doesn’t work well, and the parents typically finds themselves moving from one phonics program to the next.  This is often the case in the home school community because phonics is viewed as “THE” best way to teach reading.  Don’t get me wrong; I love phonics and it is a terrific way to teach reading IF the child has good auditory processing. If not, there is frustration, tears and feelings of low self-esteem. A visual learner might pick up sight words easily but struggle with phonics because of the learner’s visual bend.  For the tactile learner, reading is a real challenge as it is time consuming and inefficient to create each word you need to learn out of pipe cleaners or the like. Making Math Easier with Dr. Jan Bedell  Podcast #18 Be sure to download the handout below As homeschoolers we tend to teach the way we were taught or at the very least we are influenced by how we experienced school ourselves.  In this episode, Jan Bedell, the Little Giant Steps Brain Coach, challenges the standard way of doing a few problems to teach a “math lesson” and then sending the student off to “do it on their own”.  Then we grade the papers the child finished and then what?  Do we do more instruction?  Typically not, we just send the paper back with the child and tell them to correct it.  No wonder so many children HATE math.  The myth: If we help the student or do some of the student’s problems for them, it makes us somehow guilty of cheating.   That myth is debunked in this episode. Also, what about those magic cards we hold up when “working” on math facts?  In this podcast, the lunacy of that frustrating exercise is uncovered and an effective approach to learning math facts quickly and painlessly is introduced.  Just how much faster would math assignments go if math facts were instantly recalled?  How much time is wasted correcting problems where there was a math fact error?  How much better would the child’s attitude be if math assignments were more quickly done so there was time to spend on other interest areas?  What about dysgraphia? Ruth has been a NeuroDevelopmentalist for 15 years, is a pastor’s wife of 37 years, and an author of many article on the NeuroDevelopmental Approach and a great study guide, Release From Fear. Ruth was a victim of childhood abuse and knows firsthand the healing effects of the NeuroDevelopmental Approach in her own life as well as those in her practice. She will share how this approach can have an amazingly positive effect on those who have suffered traumas from any of the many causes, including adoption, abuse, neglect, fever, surgery, vaccinations, and pre-mature birth to mention a few. Many families that adopt a child later find that their child behaves oddly or reacts in an overblown way to typical everyday life events that are hard to understand. The brain’s number one responsibility is to keep us alive; it will do anything, even to the point of compromising itself, to accomplish that goal. The good news is that the brain can be regenerated and healthy parts of the brain can take over the function of the damaged part. It just takes specific stimulation to the brain over time to make that happen. What is it that preschoolers really need to experience to help their brains work at peak capacity when they start formal schooling?  That question has puzzled professionals in the educational field for years.  From a neurodevelopmental perspective, preschool preparation has nothing much to do with books you find at teacher supply stores, Sam’s or Cosco marked “preschool skills.”  It is not whether a child can use scissors, identify letters and numbers or write his name.  It has everything to do with the development of the central nervous system and most especially the brain.  The brain controls everything we do so if we prepare it with a good developmental foundation, it preforms like a well-oiled machine when the pressures of formal academics are presented.  In other words, all of the skills mentioned above that so many people concentrate on when trying to teach a particular skill, are really a natural result of a good development.  For example, if the pathway from the brain to the hand is mature and hand strength is good, it would be almost effortless to learn to cut with scissors.  Let’s not put the cart before the horse! If the foundation is not solid, that is where we see the rise in sensory issues and learning challenges appearing in more than 25% of our American children.  As you learn to work at the foundational level of development, you too can avoid learning struggles in your home. Spelling is an important skill for school and life. Many parents are baffled as to why some of their children are good spellers and others are not.  This seems to occur even when children are taught with the same reading program.  Some educational professionals advocate spelling using a phonetic approach.  The challenge with this line of thinking is that there are several ways to spell many of the English sounds.  For instance, phonetically, you would spell the word for a small ship – boat or bote but only one is the correct spelling.  Phonetically you could spell the pronoun for a girl as hir, hur or her.  All would be correct phonetically. The almost militant battle of how to best teach reading has been waged over the last 150+ years with proponents from both sides being adamant about their recommendations.  As the reading curriculum pendulum has swung back and forth from phonics to sight to phonics the controversy roars on with little attention given to anything except technique. This narrow view of reading has resulted in millions of individuals being diagnosed with dyslexia and other reading and language delays. With the introduction of learning styles even more reading techniques abound.  Phonics is an auditory approach to reading. One must hold each sound in auditory short-term memory long enough to get the word “sounded out”. If the child’s auditory short-term memory (processing) is low, phonics doesn’t work well, and the parents typically finds themselves moving from one phonics program to the next.  This is often the case in the home school community because phonics is viewed as “THE” best way to teach reading.  Don’t get me wrong; I love phonics and it is a terrific way to teach reading IF the child has good auditory processing. If not, there is frustration, tears and feelings of low self-esteem. A visual learner might pick up sight words easily but struggle with phonics because of the learner’s visual bend.  For the tactile learner, reading is a real challenge as it is time consuming and inefficient to create each word you need to learn out of pipe cleaners or the like. The Best Way to Teach Reading

Do you have a child with special learning needs?  While every child is unique and needs specialized attention, some seem to require more. They struggle to progress through typical milestones and traditional curriculum and approaches don’t seem to help them much.  They have learning, behavioral or emotional struggles or have received labels like Sensory Integration Disorder, autism, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, bi-polar disorder, Down Syndrome and a myriad of other syndromes. Included in this mix are acronyms like PDD, OCD, CAPD, ODD. Oh my, what is a parent to do? In this podcast, you will learn of my dilemma of how to help our oldest daughter, Jenee’ who was born with special needs.  God’s providence brought me to The NeuroDevelopmental Approach and changed both of our lives.  Unaware that homeschooling even existed, a move to Dallas, TX and attending a new church brought that possibility to my family in 1986 when homeschooling was still illegal in many parts of the US. No matter where you are in your journey with your special needs child, whether you are just now considering home school for this special person in your life or are a veteran, all need encouragement and equipping past the current knowledge level.  Be assured that God will show you the way; he will equip you as he calls you. Fear can be one of the biggest battles for a mom of a special needs child. What does the future hold for this child? What if people make fun of him or misinterpret his action? What will happen when I am not here to help her? Will friends be a part of his life? How do I afford all these therapies that she needs? They struggle to progress through typical milestones and traditional curriculum and approaches don’t seem to help them much.  They have learning, behavioral or emotional struggles or have received labels like Sensory Integration Disorder, autism, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, bi-polar disorder, Down Syndrome and a myriad of other syndromes. Included in this mix are acronyms like PDD, OCD, CAPD, ODD. Oh my, what is a parent to do? In this podcast, you will learn of my dilemma of how to help our oldest daughter, Jenee’ who was born with special needs.  God’s providence brought me to The NeuroDevelopmental Approach and changed both of our lives.  Unaware that homeschooling even existed, a move to Dallas, TX and attending a new church brought that possibility to my family in 1986 when homeschooling was still illegal in many parts of the US. No matter where you are in your journey with your special needs child, whether you are just now considering home school for this special person in your life or are a veteran, all need encouragement and equipping past the current knowledge level.  Be assured that God will show you the way; he will equip you as he calls you. Special Needs Homeschooling 101

Living in a household where the environment is negative is no fun for anyone.  There are many factors that could cause this undesirable situation to be happening in your home.  Some such factors can actually result in symptoms of learning struggles and even labels like ADD, ADHD or dyslexia.  I am not saying your child might need a label – far from it!  You just need to know what the possible causes are and what you as a parent can do to change them. Some of these causes that are affecting your children negatively could be something that you have never thought about and the simple solutions might surprise you! In part 1 of this message, the Brain Coach will share ways to help metabolic (inner chemistry of the body) and neurodevelopmental issues. Also, you will be equipped with a way to change your interactions with your child from negative to positive. These are some of the first steps to creating a positive learning and home environment. Stop Twirling That String with Jan Bedell, PhD Visual challenges can be varied and sometimes hard to detect, but often mom or dad know something isn’t quite right. The challenge is to figure out what is causing the problem.  The doctor might say, “The child’s vision is fine.”  The question from a neurodevelopmentalist standpoint is, would the doctor be talking about 20/20 acuity (able to see up close and far away) or vision (the way the visual information is interrupted by the brain in giving the visual message)? See if you recognize any of these symptoms of visual inefficiencies:  Are you constantly saying, “Look at me when I am talking to you” but the child doesn’t seem to be able to maintain eye contact? Are there challenges with coloring within the lines or writing on the line or with writing letters that are the same size? Is the child too close to the reading material or math page when doing academics? Does the child skip lines or small words when reading? Does the child like to watch things that twirl or move like fan blades or toy car wheels? How about constantly wanting to dangle something like a string, sock, or anything else he can find to whirl and watch? Behavior modification is the topic of many books, ministries and websites, so it can be confusing terrain for parents.  Disciplining children with learning issues or low auditory processing can sometimes be challenging, and take extra thought and attention. But no matter what the state of the child, a behavior management system is necessary to curb the sin nature we were all born with. For your behavior system to be effective it has to do two things: 1) equip you with a way to stay calm and not get “hooked” by the child’s negative behavior, and   2) give the child a reason to be self-disciplined that is so effective that they don’t ever want to suffer the consequence of their negative behavior ever again.  How do you do those things? My Brain Coach Tip: consider all the reasons for a negative environment that were brought up in and take to heart, pray about and implement the token/grace points economy that is recommended in part 2. Gone can be the days of counting to three, raising your voice, and still not getting the cooperation that you need. Being a mom of a child with involved developmental issues, Jan knows first-hand the feeling of wanting to “fix it.”  The NeuroDevelopmental Approach for Life is dynamically effective for changing the structure of the brain so individuals move through life more efficiently. If your child has symptoms of or the documented labels of ADD or ADHD, this approach offers ways to improve the brain’s ability to function.  It can help a person to stay on task and follow directions by stopping the tactile misfiring in the brain. It is this misfiring that makes it hard for these individuals to maintain focus and not be overloaded by sensory input. What if your child, or maybe even you, has issues similar to what you have read regarding dyslexia? Do you have a child that is constantly in trouble?  They don’t look at you when you talk to them.  They don’t follow directions.  They don’t answer when spoken to. They will not sit still and do their school work.  Guess what? This may not be defiance! Dr. Jan has worked with clients using the NeuroDevelopmental Approach for over 20 years.  She has seen dynamic change in children after addressing the root cause of what, on the surface, seemed like poor behavior.   Of course, we are all born with a sin nature, but that is not always the sole cause of problematic conduct.  If a child skips a NeuroDevelopmental step, there may be an issue with how they see, hear, or process, which can manifest as “bad” behavior. But there is still hope! Because we are fearfully and wonderfully made, we can still develop the pathways needed to complete these steps. Thank you adoptive parents!  You are all heroes for taking on the challenge of raising adopted children!  You know that heroes go through hard things to get that “hero” recognition and I would dare say that most, if not all of you, qualify as having done hard things. Many of you were prepared for the difficulty that adopted children go through and hoped that love would be enough, especially when the child was adopted at a very young age and sometimes right from the hospital at birth. Adopted: Isn’t Love Enough? In this Brain Coach Tip, you will learn what happens to the brain when there is trauma.  All children that are adopted have gone through the trauma of abandonment and rejection at the very least (even if they were adopted at birth) and often much more trauma than that.  When there is trauma, there are chemicals released in the brain to allow the person to stay alive but these chemicals cause damage to the neural circuitry. This damage can cause emotional, behavioral and academic struggles. The good news is that the brain pathways that were damaged can be rebuilt with specific stimulation.  God can do miracles and often does, but typically to regain overall health after trauma, love just isn’t enough.
