To the overwhelmed…I see you. I see the weight that seems to be pressing in on all sides. I know what it is to feel like you can t breathe, to feel like you are failing on all sides. But I also know that the enemy of your soul wants you to believe it and stay stuck there and that is NOT what God has for you. Even in the midst of the storm, He has peace. Even in the midst of the pressure, He has joy. If you have been feeling crushed, come refocus your perspective so that you can remind yourself of what is true and start walking in victory. Staying soft and flexible despite hurt and disappointment is not easy. It takes intentionality, it takes practice and purpose. Like a shield around us, we put up walls, distance ourselves, or become more rigid and set in our ways determined that we are right and only those who agree with us can stay. For my first few years of homeschooling, I didn’t even know “homeschool styles” and “methods” existed. I sat in my comfortable state of ignorance, just plugging along trying to find what would work but not truly being able to identify what the problem was. When I stumbled upon the different homeschool styles, it was a HUGE “aha moment” over here! So much so, in fact, that I was determined to help other unaware mother’s like me discover their own homeschool style. Since then I have learned that there really are two different homeschool styles in all of us. We all have a natural style that is ingrained in us. This is usually a combination of expectation and experience. We also generally all have some vague picture of something we want our homeschool to be. A homeschool style that we want to emulate. In today’s podcast I’m going to share a super embarrassing homeschool confessional, we are going to talk about the Charlotte Mason method and the new series I will be doing! PIN ME! The Charlotte Mason Method in Action The main motto of the Charlotte Mason method is “I am (a child of God), I can (do all things through Christ who strengthens me), I ought (to do my duty to God and others), and I will (choose the right). Now before I go further, please note that there is a large group of secular Charlotte Mason homeschoolers. She was a Christian and therefore her core beliefs are a big part of this model of education. However, it has truly been adapted and evolved over time to fit individual people. So don’t run away if you are a secular homeschooler! There are lots of blog posts out there that will tell you what the Charlotte Mason method is. You can also read Charlotte Mason’s library of books and learn more about the original method and woman herself here. I do not claim to be the most knowledgable, I have only this year truly identified this as my vision and heart for homeschooling (traditional homeschooling is my go-to). However today I want to talk about what that looks like for us. I will be giving you actual examples of teaching geography in a traditional sense and compare that with a Charlotte Mason model. I will talk about living books and copywork and building good habits and creating an atmosphere of learning. We will talk about educating the WHOLE child and what that looks like! Homeschooling can be daunting, overwhelming, challenging, and wonderful all at the same time. Sometimes we become so bogged down (especially this time of year) with curriculum that we neglect to plan out how that is going to look in practise. In today’s podcast episode, we dive into your homeschool day. I share 6 practical tips to help you let go of anxiety and expectation and actually enjoy the experience of homeschooling… for both you AND your kids! How to actually like homeschooling show notes If you prefer to read it rather than listen to it, I have put together some simple bullets to follow along!  1. Create the atmosphere  In the right atmosphere you are motivated In the right atmosphere you work better… so do your kids Find simple things that you like (candles, music, clean space) and it will begin to be associated with school work… cutting down on the whining!  2. I love fall, I love the start of school, I love the smell of new books and the neatly organized books on the shelves. It is a blank slate of possibilities, another chance to do things differently. And yet this year as I look in my sty of a school room, where books are haphazardly balancing on table tops, strewn on the floor, pencils and papers and bins peppered throughout the room like a dusting of frosting on a cake… the stress levels rise. This is it, the day when everyone goes “back to school” and in my little homeschool, you might not make it to the table and if you do, there likely isn’t a place to sit. This year I am not as organized as I would have liked to be. I’ve been focusing on getting my kitchen done and while some areas of my life are more organized than last year, the actual school area and book situation is a little less than favourable. As I was pondering this week’s podcast episode (which is, of course, late) I thought this would be the perfect topic. In today’s episode I share some of my personal struggles, my chaos, and the realities of my life as well as some practical strategies you can put into practise to begin to move forward rather than letting the “lack of readiness” hold you back. S4E9: Help! I'm Not Ready! *REVISED

It’s been a long time guys. I’m tired: 3 launches this month and 2 next, online conventions and the insanity of covid-19. I edit, I write, I pray, I homeschool, I don’t cook very often these days so I send Jonathan out to buy food, a lot. Then it starts all over again the next day. Nights are too short, days aren’t long enough, and on and on it goes. I have been so painfully remiss on this whole podcasting thing but it is the number 1 request that I get so here I am. I can’t promise you when the next one will be but I can promise you that this one is special. It’s full of rambles and stories, but it is a message of hope. It is about a perspective reset button. It’s been a long time guys. I’m tired: 3 launches this month and 2 next, online conventions and the insanity of covid-19. I edit, I write, I pray, I homeschool, I don’t cook very often these days so I send Jonathan out to buy food, a lot. Then it starts all over again the next day. Why I Think Our View of Education is Broken

Someone, somewhere out there, is going to be offended by my title. And if you are offended by my title, you will MOST definitely be offended by my examples in today’s podcast episode. Addicted to curriculum, something we laugh about and yet something that can have serious damaging effects on our homeschool journey: discontent, lack of joy, overwhelm, lack of motivation, feelings of failure, and more! I don’t say it lightly, to be honest I think we are all addicted to something in some way or another. Maybe shopping, maybe cleaning (kind of wish that was me), maybe control, maybe being needed. Every one of us has something deep inside of us that wants more in some capacity. It is both a flaw in our humanity but also, a root of how God created us to be. Today’s episode is really about more than just buying too many books (in typical Rebecca rant fashion), it is about seeking more in life and running after all that God has for you. It is about finding the balance between looking forward and embracing today. No, not addiction, but not settling or stifling yourself either! Confessions of a Curriculum Junkie

Homeschooling is one of the most challenging journeys I have ever embarked upon. I have been tested and stretched and pulled and tried beyond what I thought I could handle. I have learned that many of my perceived limits only exist in my mind. I have grown as a person. In the midst of the chaos, overwhelm and monotony of the every day it is easy to miss the moments. The treasures that are a glimmer of color and sparkle in the trenches: my 5 year olds giggle, the adorable little girl sound of my 6 year old’s voice, snuggling with my 9 year old while he finally sounds out a word and grins in triumph. I am no different than any other homeschool mom out there, I have my hard days. But the good days make it all worth it. They remind me why I am doing this and keep me going. Today’s episode starts off with an interview with my 6 year old. She shares some of her thoughts on homeschooling, what it means, a typical day, even her thoughts on socialization. I finish off with my thoughts on why we are doing this and some of the homeschool benefits I have seen along the way. Whining, fussing, crying, and general bad attitudes can be like a pin to the bubble of your homeschool day. No matter how much enthusiasm and planning you bring to the table, if your kids aren’t on board it can pop even the best of plans in no time! Today’s episode is your lifejacket in the midst of the swells of disinterest. Come and join me to learn some practical strategies and tips to help you find a way to make school more engaging and fun and productive again. Children will learn how to make their own planners using a simple notebook you can snag at the dollar store or a local office supply store. When they don't want to do school...

In today’s podcast episode, I managed to drag my (very tired) husband down to my studio in the wee hours of the morning to interview him. Because he was educated in the traditional sense (through the public school) and I was educated at home, trying to blend our styles and preconceived notions about our family was… a journey (to put it mildly). I realized that it is not common that homeschool bloggers talk about where their husbands really fit in, and I have long felt that the dynamic in our home probably rings true for a lot of other people. Here’s the deal, full disclosure, I do 99% of the homeschooling in our home. Partly logistics, hubby is a police officer with a demanding schedule. Partly I’m a control freak and I can’t stand to see him butcher the teaching style I have spent SO long cultivating in myself. I get palpitations when I see the curriculum that I hand selected because it is less pressure for my kids being used to pressure them. My husband and I learned long ago that the only way for him to be involved (if he chooses to be) is if I ‘take off eh?’ PIN ME! Let’s talk about the elephant in the room A little while ago, I was following a post where a mom was explaining her frustration when trying to deal with her husband’s lack of understanding towards the way her homeschool ran. And I just TOTALLY got it! I also realized that no one really wants to talk about this issue. We all wish it was a lot better than it really is, and it can be really hard. We are with the kids 24/7, we have spent literally weeks of our lives reading blog posts, watching videos, listening to podcasts and experimenting with our kids. We KNOW what works and what doesn’t because it took us a long while to get to this place, am I right? When our husbands come in with a traditional approach to schooling it seems nearly impossible to stay quiet. Especially if the kids are crying and you feel like you are losing all the hard work you have been investing to CHANGE your homeschool. I get that, I have BEEN there. That is my heart behind today’s podcast. To first of all, shed some light on the fact that I think this is REALLY normal. Secondly, to give us as mom’s some grace for those dads. They aren’t so different than we were when we started this journey, all full of expectation over what this was going to look like. If we never give them the chance, they are never really going to understand where we are coming from. If you want your husband on board with you, excited about choosing curriculum with you, passionate about homeschooling your kids, you need to give him some grace if he wants to get involved. Even if that means you do take a walk or go to the store or have a bath. He is GOING to have bumps along the way, but then you can show him that video YOU watched or discuss how you totally understand that, but then you read THIS article… you get the point. Give him room to make mistakes and also bring something to the table. Because he DOES have a different perspective to offer, and he DOES love those kids just as much as you do! Your Homeschool Challenges Meet My Solutions

I have a confession, I am a curriculum hoarder. Ask my husband, he’s ready to lose his mind over the amount of books I have in my basement. But I have (what I feel is) a valid excuse… I am also a curriculum reviewer. Companies send me curriculum to try with my kids and review and in a sense, that has really ruined me. Over the past two years I have discovered that there is more great, amazing, “BEST” curriculums out there than I can use. I love them all (well, almost all). This week we have been going strong in our lessons and I have come to realize that while it is all great, that doesn’t mean it is all great right now. I have five littles who all need me all at once, I have to condense what we are doing so that we still have time to pursue our interests and passions and go on rabbit trails (the BEST part about homeschooling). Right now my homeschool feels anything but free. So this podcast episode comes at kind of a strange time. After multiple requests to do a post about what we are using I decided to just be honest with you guys, share what we have on our shelves and what I *have* been using, but to tell you that we are in the middle of some shifting and there are changes on the horizon. I plan on doing a part II continuation of this episode sharing a new rhythm of what we are doing and how it is working for us. I think looping will definitely be a part of that episode. I have a confession, I am a curriculum hoarder. Ask my husband, he’s ready to lose his mind over the amount of books I have in my basement. But I have (what I feel is) a valid excuse… I am also a curriculum reviewer. Companies send me curriculum to try with my kids and review and in a sense, that has really ruined me. Over the past two years I have discovered that there is more great, amazing, “BEST” curriculums out there than I can use. I love them all (well, almost all). This week we have been going strong in our lessons and I have come to realize that while it is all great, that doesn’t mean it is all great right now. I have five littles who all need me all at once, I have to condense what we are doing so that we still have time to pursue our interests and passions and go on rabbit trails (the BEST part about homeschooling). Right now my homeschool feels anything but free. So this podcast episode comes at kind of a strange time. After multiple requests to do a post about what we are using I decided to just be honest with you guys, share what we have on our shelves and what I *have* been using, but to tell you that we are in the middle of some shifting and there are changes on the horizon. I plan on doing a part II continuation of this episode sharing a new rhythm of what we are doing and how it is working for us. S2E4: What I am using for curriculum this year

Traditional homeschooling is a style of education that closely resembles the school system. In homeschool circles, it is often referred to as “playing school” because you try to mimic the look, feel, and rhythm of a regular school day in your home. It can work wonderfully for some moms and children, but for a good amount of people, it is a recipe for disaster. That being said, it is one of the most common homeschool styles simply because we naturally teach the way we were taught… which if we grew up in the school system ourselves… means traditionally. We have been conditioned to believe that this is the way school should look, the way children learn. And yet one size simply does not fit all! Today we are going to be addressing what traditional homeschooling is, what it looks like, some of the pitfalls to watch more and more! PIN ME! Is traditional homeschooling right for me? Only you can answer that question for your family. I started out as a traditional homeschooler. The reason this style did not work for me is because I am too much of a perfectionist and the high expectations I put on myself cause me and my children a lot of stress and pressure that makes homeschooling not fun for anyone. I also find it is completely impractical. I simply can not teach 4 different kids at four different grade levels times 7-8 subjects each. Not to mention the preschooler hanging off my legs whining the entire time! My life simply does not facilitate and I had to adjust to more of a “one-room-schoolhouse” model of education. The reality is we are all on a journey. I started out traditional, I am now more Charlotte Mason, and I think I am heading towards more of an unschooling approach. I am not where I want to be but I am better off than where I was 5 years ago. We are more at rest in our homeschool, we connect more, we laugh more, and we have fun together. How do I know it’s enough? Should I add more? What if I miss something? What are kids learning at this age? The questions swirl in our minds and instead of walking forward in confidence that we know our children best, we are frozen with insecurity. Homeschool doubt is a real thing and today’s podcast episode is hopefully one small step to convincing you that It isn’t about quantity, it is about quality. S4E4: What you Need to Know Before Buying Curriculum

What is a real life homeschool day in your home? If you’re anything like me, it doesn’t mimic the YouTube videos we see with the cutesy little music and the smiling mom with the pristine house. Maybe you are homeschooling crammed around your kitchen table with crumbs on your books, or maybe you are working in a basement that needs to be updated and is anything but pretty. Or maybe you aren’t homeschooling at all today because the kids are sick and you are just snuggling up and watching a movie together. Hands down, the biggest question I get asked on an ongoing basis is either how do I know I’m doing enough? or How do you do it all? I know I’ve talked about both of these before, but the question keeps coming so I am going to keep answering. Today’s podcast episode will debunk the myth that I have anything together. I pray it inspires you that “enough” is interpretational and constantly in flux and something that is determined by you and you alone. This is what I look like about 50% of the time these days, in snuggly warm pyjamas working at my computer either designing, editing, creating, writing, or fulfilling orders. Behind me you can see the bag of chips and pop I mentioned in the podcast today… yup, that was real. I guess I’m failing in the whole realm of working out and eating right too. Also, my 5 year old took this picture.  In today’s episode I mention the new space unit, here is a little sneak peek of what it looks like. This is just two journals, there are a total of six (below you can see the covers). This is just one month, one unit! The idea is you would read the teachers guide (shown on the left) and then each child would be working at their own level. It covers all their subjects (geography, social studies, history, science, reading, writing, spelling, grammar, art, Bible, and more) except math and it is a great opportunity to see the connections between subjects and between grades as you work all together. This is just two journals, there are a total of six (below you can see the covers). This is just one month, one unit! The idea is you would read the teachers guide (shown on the left) and then each child would be working at their own level. It covers all their subjects (geography, social studies, history, science, reading, writing, spelling, grammar, art, Bible, and more) except math and it is a great opportunity to see the connections between subjects and between grades as you work all together. The Real Homeschoolers of North America

I am hesitating. It is 9am, hours after my podcast normally goes live and here I sit convincing myself that this one should just sit on the bench.  But somewhere along the way, I have learned that it is often these posts, these videos, these podcasts that I don’t want to post, that I doubt… that are meant for someone specific.  I don’t know who you are, someone who feels judged, hurt, misunderstood, or dissatisfied. I don’t know your circumstances. But I do know that this rambling podcast of mine is supposed to be posted so despite my doubts… I’m about to hit the publish button.  Oh, here is my midnight podcast snack. Un-edited, horrible, yellow light nighttime picture, notice the PJs? It’s my formal podcast wear     You may have noticed that my podcasts are getting more and more “God-cast-y”. You guys, I can’t help it. I hold back so much, I try so hard to keep on topic and keep things about homeschooling. And yet homeschooling for me is 100% tied to my relationship with God and the calling He has placed on my life. Homeschool joy is the same principle as spiritual and personal joy and contentment in your life. If you are following me and getting sick of the increasing level of God that is coming out, I want to make sure that I am completely transparent and honest that this will probably only increase and I completely understand if my divergence no longer fits with what you want to hear. Full permission to stop following me! &lt;3 as a side note, i will be doing special bonus episode on wednesday that has nothing to do with homeschooling, just because can't keep writing sermon notes myself any more. no more holding back. Unschooling gets a bad rep and it kind of drives me nuts. I am not an unschooler but I love the philosophy behind it and I am working towards finding the freedom and flexibility to adopt this homeschool style. It has the potential to offer our kids so much more of a tailored education, to follow their interests, to find their strengths and run with them! It is similar to the idea of “hack schooling” in this video.  It’s time to deal with some of the misconceptions that people have about this incredibly powerful homeschool style. It’s time to talk about what it can look like and the broad variations of what that can look like in different homes. This is the season that homeschool burnout settles in. It seeps through the cracks of our impatience, the mundane of our half-finished books, the grating of the kids whining yet again. Things are not as exciting, the passion seems to have tapered off, and we are left trying to pick up the pieces and salvage the day. But here’s the thing, I want so much more than just homeschool survival. My goal is greatness, passion, joy, excitement, and wonder. My goal is an environment and an atmosphere that we ALL want to be a part of.  Julie’s new book, The Brave Learner, is the perfect pick-me-up to a mid-year slump. The very first chapter caught me completely off guard. You can tell a good book when it makes you want to read it. You can tell if a book is great when you can’t put it down. But every once in a while, a book that is extraordinary rises to the surface. It is the book that you continually put down, you have to stop and DO. It inspires change, it propels you to action. This week I received an e-mail from Lindsey and her question was so good I decided to do a podcast episode about it!  Her question was:  “You talk a lot about accepting your kids where they are and removing heavy burdens and expectations that they live up to the long list of requirements that public schools are mandated by. I absolutely love this idea, but I have such a hard time with it in practice. My oldest is starting third grade and this will be our first year where we have to comply with mandatory testing. Do you have those sorts of requirements where you live? If so, how do you balance the practice of working at your child s pace and not pushing hard to get them to a certain level academically with worrying about and preparing for state tests? I m a box checker, and curriculum guide follower and have such a hard time breaking free of that, but so badly want to be better at being willing to break away from the check lists when one of my children has an interest that leads them down an amazing rabbit trail of intrigue and organic learning.
