Today we discuss some recent pond management that we’ve done and how it relates to managing for wildlife. A lot of the principles are the same; spawning habitat, brood habitat, escape cover, food sources, managing against predation, providing food sources and setting yourself up for productive fishing are all things that we apply under water but it’s very similar to what we do for wildlife.

So this week, we discuss the difference between what you see during the summer versus the fall and how you can still plan successfully for fall time patterns. Testosterone in bucks ramps up during the later portion of August and increases throughout the rut, only then to decrease and signal to shed antlers during winter. This increase during August breaks up the bachelor groups therefore redistributing bucks across the landscape and not all huddled up around one single food source. This makes what you see during summer not translate well to bow season. So, we caution everyone to say, be careful what you see and how you prepare right now, because it is all subject to change! Take a listen and enjoy the velvet photos rolling in!

I am new to land management. I’ve only listened to a few shows, but I have really gravitated to the idea that more quail means a better deer habitat. Quail and Turkey love seeds and insects. If seeds and insects are present, then there is good for the deer. If there is cover for the quail, then there is probably cover for the deer. We have seen more and more quail the last few deer seasons.

You are wrong about one thing though. There are GIANT deer in Douglas county. Even on U Hwy south of Mansfield!

One of the goals that we have set out to achieve with Land &amp; Legacy is to change mindsets when it comes to managing the land. The current model of land management is tainted and skewed by placing improper value on food plots, mineral, and supplemental feeding. This has tainted the extreme value associated with managing our natural resources. This podcast is devoted to sharing the success of one Land &amp; Legacy client in Ohio. Todd Watts has been managing his property for 3 full years now. When he first set out to make improvements, like most, he focused solely on food plots. Todd shares how he found some success with this, but he knew it was only limited. The next steps he took was to focus on converting hay fields into crop fields. Again, this only added more temporary food on the landscape. this further improved the farm from the beginning, but still left major voids in his plan. This farm was missing one of the key elements necessary to hold and grow big deer,  cover. Without cover, deer will still occupy large ranges as they travel long distances and often only reach destination food resources at dark. Knowing this to be true, Todd called Land &amp; Legacy and the farm began with a facelift and redirection of time and resources. Immediately upon arriving on the farm, we took notice to the large acreage left unmanaged. The slopes or old pasture land was still dominated by fescue. These days, the same acres, are 5 foot tall and covered in native forbs, providing quality cover and tons of forage. These acres now produce annually, 3,000 lbs of digestible forage. The Value of Old-Field Management

It's easy to get on a piece of ground and start thinking food plots and how to make more of them. Food plots are a great hunting strategy and attraction, but it's important to never get to focused on them. Last winter Adam assisted the guys at Sunshine Legacy Farms with their habitat management plan and it's taken them in a whole new direction! Having defined bedding areas is an important part of a hunting strategy, but what is proper bedding? Is woody saplings 10 or 15 feet tall adequate bedding? Or a stand of warm season grasses? After a few hours of running a chainsaw in parts of their farm the change was obvious. It became even more obvious when he began to drive by and notice the defined trails leaving the food plots and headed towards the bedding thickets. This work came full circle when Russell made his first walk into one of the bedding thickets to observe the large amount of beds and browse from the deer utilizing the work he made back in the winter. During this podcast Adam and Russell discuss what land management looked like prior to Land &amp; legacy consulting on the property and how it has changed so much since January. They're now looking at techniques that improve large amounts of the property rather than the few acres in food plots. Prescribed fire, timber management, old field management, edge feathering, these are all things they're working to build upon to make Sunshine Legacy Farms one of the top farms in their region.

Thousands of food plot acres will be planted this fall, some will be successful while some fail. Others will only provide temporary attraction while others will provide high-quality forage for many months. If you have listened and followed along for very long, you know that we often recommend full-scale land management and habitat improvements on each property we visit. This workload can often-times be overwhelming as the projects seem to stack up quickly. Very few times, does the landowner take the wheel, roll up the sleeves, and begin to knock out projects one by one based on time being a limited resource. However, Land &amp; Legacy client, Heath Sutton of Bowling Green, KY has been hard at work and is seeing a complete property transformation in just a few short months. In this podcast, you will hear the recommendations and the follow-up work completed thus far. We visited Heath's property in February of 2019, since then, the land management updates have been nonstop. A complete harvest of the cedar understory has been completed. The cedar harvest was completed by a logging crew and Heath got paid twice for cedar! Be sure to listen to learn how this happened! What remains is a mixed open canopy timber as well as large opening where solid cedar stands once dominated the property. In addition, firebreaks around the boundary of the property have been created. Now the understory is waiting to pop during the spring of 2020. The soon to be flush of native herbaceous cover and forage in the understory will drastically increase the carrying capacity of game animals such as wild turkey and deer. Down the road prescribed fire will be easily implemented on the property as well as access treestand locations. Prescribed fire is a fantastic tool available for most land managers to use on their property. This natural tool is the cheapest and yields the best results for those looking to manage their farm. However, there are many other tools that come to mind depending on the project at hand. It is commonly thought to think of mowing as similar or a possible substitute to using prescribed fire, however, this is far from the truth. There are many things different between the two tools. They are not equal and leave different results in the habitat. Of course, prescribed fire has it's limitations as well. Think of prescribed fire as a maintenance tool and forestry mulching or a chainsaw as the tool used to get the habitat in place to be maintained. Prescribed fire is a beast to understand and study to before using on your property. We encourage you to take classes and volunteer before implementing. Prescribed Fire Vs. Forestry Mulching

On this podcast, we discuss several critical observations we made while consulting across the country. Recent trips have taken us to farms in Mississippi, Virginia, Arkansas, Iowa, and Missouri. We have seen several trends on the past tours that we devote our time to discuss. Our goal is to educate everyone on the proper management of the natural resources on their land. Closed canopy forests are so common across much of North America. However, when we examine forests closely, they provide a very small amount of benefit to the overall landscape for many wildlife species. Forests produce on average 50-100 pounds of digestible forage per acre each year, yet a whitetail consumes over 2,000 pounds of food a year. When we place real values on each acre of land we are managing, we find a huge under producing element. Although this resource is a low producer, we find it dominating the landscape! If we want to manage a property to be super productive, we have to decrease the number of acres in closed-canopy forest. The new objective for Earth Day is to cut a tree rather than plant one! This improvement across the landscape would make a positive impact. There are more trees across the landscape now than ever before, think about it! Pt. 2 Hinge-Cutting vs. Clear-Cutting with Matt Ross of QDMA

The time of the year that we all dream about it here. Pre-rut activity is ramping up across the country. Even nonhunters like motorist take notice of this spike in activity. They notice certain areas in their commute that always have deer crossing the road. They may not refer to these areas as a bottleneck, but us hunters are aware of these funnels. With deer on their feet and moving like crazy, it is imperative for hunters to spend their time hunting the pre-rut and using bottlenecks to their advantage. A few podcasts ago, we discussed how to identify bottlenecks. Now that we know they are significant especially during late October and early November, the question becomes, how do we make them better to bow hunt? Not only do we want these areas to funnel deer, but we want them to funnel deer routinely and consistently. The most important factor in having successful bottlenecks is that highly desirable resources are on either side of that bottleneck. Without those present, the area will experience only limited traffic. In this podcast, we share our recommendations and techniques with you on how to create high-value resources to complement the bottleneck, ultimately producing Grand Central Station for whitetails on your property. Over the last few months, we have been developing native seeds blends with Pure Air Natives, a custom native seed dealer.
