Dr. Parag Kachalia is one of the most influential people in dentistry. And as one of the Seattle Study Club’s Top 10 Young Educators, he’s using his influence to help other dentists achieve their best in their business. His only regret in his career is not joining the Study Club sooner. As dentists, we are responsible for the wellness of our patients, but it’s also our job to run a successful business. And Dr. Kachalia knows that dentistry is about more than just the 32 teeth in the mouth. He’s the rare kind of dentist who loves the business side of things. He minored in economics and explains how that education helps him more in his daily practice (and as a mentor) than any physiology course he took in college. Economics and dentistry weren’t always the plan — Dr. Kachalia wanted to be an oncologist, but he’s always been an economist at heart. His family ran their own business, and while he was inspired to take economics courses, not many other dental students are. In addition, many teachers aren’t prepared to teach the type of economics we need to run a successful business in the 2020s. Dr. Lisa Germain wears many hats. If you heard her on The Dental Slang Podcast before, then you’ll recognize her as an educator, podcaster, artist, author, and dentist. She has a New Orleans practice she’s owned for over three decades. She’s also faced many hardships and losses over the past few years that have changed how she approaches her life and business. As a dentist, Dr. Germain is one of the leading proponents of Botox for pain management. Using Botox for pain management is something within a dentist’s wheelhouse, but many of the first to recommend Botox were shunned for it. We discuss the initial pushback she received from other dentists and patients, how attitudes today are changing, and what this means for the future of dentistry. Dr. Germain works closely with patients who suffer from TMJ and has researched many different treatment methods for them. She is writing a new book with colleague and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Benji Dhillon to help other dentists better understand this treatment method, and she refers to book writing as a “labor of love.”  Writing, in particular, is a labor of love that has inspired a well of healing for Dr. Germain. Dr. Sammy Noumbissi is a dental surgeon and provider who changed the game decades ago by adding ceramic implants to his repertoire. While other dentists continued to use titanium implants. Dr. Noumbissi built his practice by listening to his patients. His first decade as a dentist was traditional, working as a general practitioner and using titanium implants. But when he returned to practice on the east coast, he started to work with a different type of patient. He’s adopted a new kind of “hybrid practice” model that incorporates a wide variety of procedures and multi-practice elements.  A hybrid office is an innovative way to give your patients exactly what they need while working together with other dentists. Dr. Jones can sometimes complete ten or more different procedures in one day. Dr. Ardalan and Dr. Phelps go way back, having gone to university at UNC-Chapel Hill and reuniting again in dental school at NOVA in Ft. Lauderdale. But they took different paths in dental school, and Dr. Reza Ardalan has become one of the premier pediatric dentists in the Carolinas.  Pediatric dentistry is the top choice among incoming dentists, but Dr. Ardalan never thought he'd end up there. He saw other dentists at school studying endodontics and tried to fit in, but it wasn't his passion. However, a pediatric practice fits his lifestyle, and we discuss some of the differences between pediatric vs. general practices that inspired Dr. Ardalan to work with children.  Talking to children is much different than speaking with parents or adult patients, and the hallmark of a pediatric dentist is their ability to communicate. It's important to get down to their level and explain the procedures in their terms, but treating kids with respect and understanding is key in Dr. Ardalan's offices.  Dr. Ardalan creates the right office experience that makes this level of communication possible. Dr. Ardalan designed spaces for children, teens, and even their parents with the intent of spoiling the whole family at the dentist's office. Dr. Joe McEnhill sort of fell into dentistry. As a student in Belfast, he was torn between medicine and dentistry. But, he was meant to be a dentist. After all, his sister and both of his brothers are also dentists.  He'll jokingly tell you he's the best of them because he has the most letters after his name. We think he's one of the best because of his hunger for knowledge and skills as a surgical dentist. Yes, dental surgery can be intimidating. Do you remember how many teeth you extracted in dental school? You aren't alone — we can count how many we practiced extractions on one hand. That's why Dr. McEnhill recommends starting small and simple to build your confidence. The first steps he took into dental surgery were removing wisdom teeth and fixing fractured jaws.  Starting with the basics will give you the foundation you need to build a robust set of skills. Then, build a portfolio gradually and play to your strengths and the needs of your patients. Dr. McEnhill discusses how owning a dental practice in a small town impacted his desire to learn new skills. This “unconventional” path put him on many different journeys, and he quickly learned how taking control of one’s life can open up many different doors.  Today, Dr. Jeal owns three dental practices, one of which he started from the ground up. Dr. Nate Jeal is proof that the path to dentistry doesn’t have to be conventional. Alan is talking mostly today about the slang he uses when referring to his dental tools. In fact, we all use slang for our tools. Most dental tools have terrifying names, with words like “blade” in them. No patient wants to hear words like that while they’re sitting in your chair! For that reason, we all come up with our own unique, sometimes completely nonsensical, words and phrases to describe the tools we use.  Dr. Alan is being completely honest when he says he’s never called a dental tool by it’s real name. In fact, many of us can claim the same. This can cause a lot of problems when we start using the same slang for different tools. For Alan, he’ll call too many of his burs “footballs”, downright confusing his team so they end up bringing him all of the football-shaped burs rather than risk bringing the wrong one by accident.  Regardless of these funny little stories, Jodi brings up an excellent point in today’s episode. The slang we use, while sometimes silly, really works at humanizing what it means to be a dentist and sit in a dentist’s chair. Think about it - a lot of our patients are anxious about their dental appointments. It’s a pretty scary, sometimes uncomfortable, place to be. Being able to use slang and other analogies to explain what we’re doing can help patients feel at ease, and can even help them understand the most confusing aspect of dental practice - dental insurance.  On today’s episode, the three of us are sharing the different analogies we use with our patients. Dr. Michael Cohen is the founder of the Seattle Study Club, and he’s hopping on the mic today fresh from a presentation in Copenhagen. The topic of that presentation—dental education—comes up in today’s episode, but first we discuss what inspired him to found one of the most well-known study clubs in the dental community. The creation of the Seattle Study Club network stemmed from a need for continuing education. In the early days, these study clubs were more social gatherings than they were an exchange of ideas. Michael wanted to give dentists the opportunity to interact clinically, tap into what he calls their own “databanks of knowledge,” and ultimately become more proficient at diagnostics and treatment planning by working together. The power of collaboration inspired Michael to create this “university without walls.” He went back to school to learn how to better deliver continuing education, allowing him to bring the university to dentists who don’t have the luxury of going back to school. Now, with the Seattle Study Club and his lecture and symposium circuit, dentists can continue to learn new skills and hone their craft without having to sit in a classroom for months on end.
