The subject of the investigation, Rodney Coronado, was also responsible for the arson and destruction of mink research facilities at Washington State and Oregon State Universities. Coronado pleaded guilty for the Michigan State University crimes, the first federal conviction of an admitted ALF member. John Morrison served in the FBI for 28 years. One of those "unsubs" was eventually identified as FBI agent turned spy, Robert Hanssen. Mike reviews the investigation of Hanssen, who is considered the most damaging spy in FBI history. Mike recruited the source, a Russian agent of the KGB/SVR, who provided the information that led to Hanssen's identification. For this effort, Mike received the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement from the CIA. This is part one of a two-part episode. Retired agent Max Noel reviews the Unabomber Terrorist Ted Kaczynski case. For 15 years, multiple agencies, including the FBI, AFT, the Postal Inspection Service and numerous state and local police departments, worked mostly independently to identified and arrest the person responsible for setting off 16 bombs throughout the United States that killed three and seriously maimed and injured several victims. Noel, who was planning to retire just prior to being hand-picked for the assignment, was selected as the investigative squad supervisor for a new task force created by then Attorney General Janet Reno and FBI Director Louie Freeh. Noel and other members of the taskforce received the Attorney General's Award for Distinguish Service for their efforts. Noel, along with Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Jim Freeman and Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) Terry D. Turchie, wrote a book, Unabomber: How the FBI Broke Its Own Rules to Capture the Terrorist Ted Kaczynski, about how, after almost 17 years, they finally identified, captured, and convicted the notorious Unabomber. Jesse's efforts resulted in the arrest and conviction of 20 members of the mob family operating in the U.S., in addition to the head of the family who lived in Sicily, Italy. Retired Special Agent Jesse Coleman reviews the two-year period he went undercover as a drug dealer selling cocaine and heroin to made members of the Sicilian mob. During the undercover investigation, he secretly recorded more than 200 conversations between him and the subjects. Jesse's efforts resulted in the arrest and conviction of 20 members of the mob family operating in the U.S., in addition to the head of the family who lived in Sicily, Italy.  Retired agent Gerry Downes worked in the FBI's Child Abduction and Serial Killer Unit (now known as the BAU) for 11 years. He reviews the time he traveled with several team members to Accra, Ghana, in May 2001 to assist in the identification of a serial killer responsible for the horrific murders of more than 30 women. During the two weeks the Gerry and the FBI team were in Ghana, a suspect was arrested. The suspect confessed to committing several of the murders. While in the country, the FBI team also trained Ghanaian police investigators in evidence collection and interrogations techniques. Retired agent Raymond Holcomb reviews his time working for the legendary FBI hero John O’Neill and working in Yemen with fellow agent Ali Soufan on the USS Cole bombing and 9/11 investigations. Both O’Neill and Soufan are featured in the Hulu TV series The Looming Tower. While assigned to the New York Office, Ray Holcomb was appointed Commander of the 50 member FBI New York SWAT team. Under his leadership, the team assumed an expanded role and, in addition to regular involvement in high-risk domestic arrests, the team provided overseas security and enhanced investigative capability for FBI teams deploying in response to terrorist attacks involving U.S. citizens. Post 9/11, he was selected by then Director Mueller to stand up a new counterterrorism unit named the FBI Fly Away/Rapid Deployment Team. Ray Holcomb is the author of Endless Enemies: Inside FBI Counterterrorism in which he writes about leading the FBI’s elite cadre of counterterrorism agents who were at the helm of every major post-9/11 investigation. Retired agent Bob Clifford reviews the organization and operation of the transnational gang Mara Salvatrucha, known as MS-13, the most dangerous gang in the United States. In November 2004, Bob Clifford was asked by then- FBI Director Robert Mueller to accept a special assignment to FBIHQ to establish the FBI's MS-13 National Gang Task Force, and served as its first director. For the next 18 months, Bob led multi-agency and multi-national efforts to combat the infamous MS-13 and other violent transnational street gangs, to include several deployments throughout Central America to successfully garner international cooperation and intelligence-sharing. In addition to coordinating multiple law enforcement field operations, Bob was required to appear before White House, Congressional, and Cabinet-level officials on a regular basis. The task force is now known as the Transnational Anti-Gang (TAG) Task Force initiative.  Retired agent Dell Spry was liaison to the CIA Counterintelligence Center, Counterespionage Group, and was the lead investigator for the FBI in the Aldrich Ames case. He reviews the two-year-long investigation where he, as the FBI case agent, along with a team of FBI and CIA personnel, was successful in identifying Ames as a KGB mole. Ames, who was directly responsible for the execution of several Soviet and Russian assets and operatives, was charged and convicted of espionage in 1994 and is serving a life sentence. Dell received the FBI Director’s Award for Excellence in a Counterintelligence Investigation and the CIA Director’s Meritorious Service Award for his efforts. Through his work on the Ramsey case and others, Joe studied, refined, and applied the science of nonverbal communications.
