Joey Havens grew up in a small town in Northern Mississippi, spending a lot of his time outdoors fishing for crappie fish and white perch with his brother. Now, he takes his son and grandson fishing, sometimes even in salt water for speckled trout. Joey says fishing gives him a chance to recharge so he can give more energy to the HORNE team, and it humanizes him, allowing other to more easily relate. In this episode, Joey and I talk about how important it is to take the time to get to know others on a personal level, because “we all crave to connect to other people.” He leads by example, showing everyone at HORNE that it’s okay to be human. This helps everyone develop stronger trust in each other, which only makes the firm stronger and more successful. The biggest shift happened a few years ago when the firm leadership decided to be very intentional about making culture a priority every single day.

He now works in Investment Risk Management at an Asset Management Firm in Denver, CO. In this episode, we talk about our first training at PwC, moving into the Internal Audit side shortly thereafter and how an accounting degree can lead to a diverse career path — many times not even doing traditional accounting at all. Andrew graduated from UCLA with a major in Business Economics and a minor in Accounting. After 5 years with PwC in their advisory services division, focusing on Risk and Controls projects, Andrew made the move to an asset management firm where he has been working in various roles over the past 12 years. He still has his active CPA license, although his career has gone many directions other than accounting. Darcy Boerio always enjoyed running, especially when her son was a baby and could be pushed in a jogging stroller. But once he was too old for that, Darcy struggled to find a fitness activity they could both do together. She was talking with a friend who did karate with her daughter and thought that it wouldn’t hurt to go. With her friend as an accountability, Darcy and her son have made it a regular thing.
