Our special guest today is Robert James, award winning LGBTQ filmmaker whose work is steeped in San Francisco culture. His outstanding documentaries, celebrated around the world, often explore themes of queer identity, activism, and community. His films bring to life people and souls who might otherwise be forgotten, but were in their own rights dynamic creative human beings with creative contributions for the world.Today we will be talking about Robert's newest release,“The Unabridged Mrs. Vera’s Daybook” which  tells the brilliant story of historic activism, love, and community art through the works of two prolific San Francisco artists, David Faulk and Michael Johnstone, who also happen to be long-term AIDS survivors and extraordinary activists who were instrumental in ACT UP and the NAMES Project (culminating in the March On Washington/installation of Aids Quilt in Washington, D.C.). Today we find out with special guest Sarah McBride.Sarah is an activist and politician who has been a Democratic member of the Delaware Senate since January 2021. She was previously the National Press Secretary of the Human Rights Campaign. She has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in her role as senator. She has spoken out against discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and has worked to pass legislation that would protect the rights of LGBTQ+ people. She is also the author of the memoir "Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality." The book tells the story of her life and her journey .We also talk to journalist Dawn Ennis about a faux "anti-trans expert" making the rounds on Fox News shows claiming to be a former counselor to LGBTQ teens. One of the featured films from this colaboration is a short film called Avivar, premiering at Outfest Los Angeles 2023.  Today we talk to the producer , writer, director and star of Avivar.Outfest began as a queer film festival and has become a major arts, media and entertainment organization. This year's festival runs July 13 to July 23. Avivar means to ignite, revive, rekindle, The film centers on Roberto, played by Jonathan De La Torre, who also wrote the story the film was based on. Roberto is dying and reflects on the machismo and homophobic trauma he inflicted on his family, and the dysfunction that created. Steve Pieters

Our guest today, the  Rev. Dr. Steve Pieters was raised in Andover, Massachusetts, where his father chaired the Mathematics Department at Phillips Academy.  In 1976, he joined Good Shepherd Parish Metropolitan Community Church in Chicago, where he decided to pursue a calling to the professional ministry. In 1982, Steve resigned his position in Hartford and moved to Los Angeles, where he began to experience a series of illnesses that were diagnosed as AIDS-Related Complex. In April, 1984, he was diagnosed with AIDS/Kaposi's Sarcoma and stage four lymphoma, and he was told by one health professional that he would not live to see 1985. Not only did he live to see 1985, but during that year he became "patient number 1" on the first anti-viral drug trial, taking suramin for a total of 39 weeks. While on suramin, both cancers went into complete remission. Due to toxic side effects, the drug was discontinued for use against AIDS. However, Rev. Pieters continues to enjoy a complete remission of his cancers.Since his diagnosis, Rev. Pieters has served on the Boards of Directors of AIDS Project Los Angeles, the AIDS Interfaith Council of Southern California, the AIDS National Interfaith Network (USA), and the first Los Angeles City/County AIDS Task Force, and was Field Director for the AIDS Ministry of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches from 1987 to 1997. Pieters was one of twelve invited guests at a Prayer Breakfast at the White House with U.S. President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and National AIDS Policy Coordinator Kristine Gebbie prior to World AIDS Day 1993. The President talked about Rev. Pieters in his World AIDS Day speech on December 1, 1993.He was famously interviewed by Tammy Faye Bakker on her TV show, and that interview was recreated in the film The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Today we honor the Queens of Rock and Roll.  The supreme Queen, Tina Turner, passed this week and we pay tribute to her.We also will be launching the world premiere of Glistening by Grace DeVine . Known for their evocative lyricism, Grace with ethereal vocals, combines their artistic prowess with a message of inclusivity and self-acceptance. “Dont gotta be a woman, don’t gotta be a man. The song invites listeners on a transformative journey as it encapsulates the essence of Pride. We also celebrate the true women pioneers of Rock and Roll, the original Queens... a group known as FANNY. Their story is the subject of a new documentary just launced on PBS called FANNY: The Right to Rock. As the first all-female rock act to record an album for a major record label, FANNY was the first all-female rock act to rise to real prominence in the US and Europe. Our focus guest is film maker Bobbie Jo Hart. The fascist-leaning arm of the Republican Party is moving fast and hard against LGBTQ kids. As concerned advocates warn of "blood on your hands", the power brokers in many red states blatantly do not care.Who can at risk LGBTQ youth turn to? The logical answer, the advocacy group most funded by the LGBTQ concerned population, is the Trevor Project. However, due to issues we will review in our special report by Brody Levesque today, that organization is falling down on its ability to help kids when they are at a crisis point.We also will be talking to Lance Preston, Founder and Executive Director of the Rainbow Youth Project USA, a social welfare organization that promotes the health, safety, and wellness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual young people throughout the United States. We will be talking about the real-life experiences of kids persecuted by the new oppression being put upon them. We will be talking about the help they need, the hlep they are not getting, and what can be done.

Maya's contract was dropped for international think tank that campaigns against poverty and inequality, when they found she participated in an anti-trans campaigns online.On Twitter, Rowling wrote: “Dress however you please,Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? #IStandWithMaya #ThisIsNotADrill.”Of Forstater, the judge reviewing her case concluded her to be innately hostile to transgender people. From the judgement: “I conclude from … the totality of the evidence, that [Forstater] is absolutist in her view of sex and it is a core component of her belief that she will refer to a person by the sex she considered appropriate even if it violates their dignity and/or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment. She has already outlined infrastructure, affordable housing, addressing the rising cost of living, the wage gap and gun control as priorities (she identifies as "pro-2nd Amendment.")According to BuzzFeed, Janessa spent nearly seven years in the Marines , graduated from Northwestern University and worked as a human rights activist lobbying Congress to end the genocide in Darfur. As a Marine, she participated in a government study that allowed women to volunteer for combat courses in the military. As we are bombarded with daily news and numbers of the COVID-19 virus and its effects, one aspect has be sidelined: the sharp rise in hate incidents particularly against Asian-Americans, LGBTQI+ people, and immigrants. These incidents represent a spike in an already worrisome trend of anti-LGBTQI+ animus.Lecia Brooks, Chief Workplace Transformation Officer of the Southern Poverty Law Center, (SPLC) joins us today to discuss the issue and what can be done to fight it. Prior to her current role at SPLC, she previously served as the SPLC’s outreach director, where she traveled across the U.S. and abroad to counter hate and extremism and to promote the celebration of difference. "A significant factor fueling the frequency of this trend is the racist rhetoric of President Donald Trump," Lecia told the LA Blade Newspaper.Trump has refused to refer to the virus and it accompanying pandemic by its given scientific label, instead referring to it as ‘the Chinese Virus,’ in press briefings and press photo opportunities. This has also caused some members of the West Wing staff to label it inaccurately and in a seemingly racist way. On March 17, CBS News White House correspondent Weijia Jang, a Chinese-American tweeted, “This morning a White House official referred to #Coronavirus as the “Kung Flu” to my face. To date, 20 states and almost 70 municipalities in the US have passed laws to protect LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy through the legal work of a legal group called "Born Perfect." So-called “conversion therapy” that promises to make gay people straight has been condemned by every major medical and mental health organization, yet it continues to happen in every state. Kids subjected to it are often exposed to traumatic practices that often result in severe mental health challenges and suicides.Our guest today is Mathew Shurka, the co-founder of Born Perfect. During his five years of conversion therapy from ages 16-21, Mathew endured many different types of fraudulent and scientifically discredited “treatments” that he was told would “cure” his homosexuality. Most traumatizing, he was instructed to stay away from his mother and two sisters for three years based on the false belief that being gay is caused by a man being too close to his mother or other female relatives. Mathew sought out treatment for the trauma he endured and reconciled with his family. At 24 he began advocating to end conversion therapy with The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and worked with NCLR to create Born Perfect in 2014. Today we explore the terror that such bogus "therapies" instill, where they are practiced and what can be done to stop them.With co-host Brody Levesque.

That program, originally was called Truth Ministry is "faith-based " and located in South Carolina. It aims to suppress or completely change a person’s LGBTQ+ sexuality through counseling, interventions, or ministry. The organization was eventually rebranded and renamed as Hope for Wholeness in 2013.Our guests are two people who know Game, and have been tightly involved with the ex-gay movement for years. We are joined by Yvette Cantu Schneider, who was involved in the so-called ex-gay movement for two decades. She was a policy analyst and spokesperson for Family Research Council, and, later, was the first and only director of women’s ministry for Exodus International. She is the author of the book Never Not Broken: a journey of unbridled transformation, and the soon-to-be-released novel Two Black Stones. We are also pleased to feature good friend Kathy Baldock, an ordained minster and the Executive Director of Renobased Canyon Walker Connections. Kathy has now read and reviewed 47 anti-LGBTQ books by Christian authors. She has seen the expectation and goals patterns shift as the conservatives try to control LGBTQ people. Kathy has now read and reviewed 47 anti-LGBTQ books by Christian authors. She has seen the expectation and goals patterns shift as the conservatives try to control LGBTQ people. A twelve year old was walking on the beach and saw a baby seal that was sick and in need. People were surrounding it with blankets, help and hope. A while later, he saw a homeless man on the sidewalk, even more sick and in need than the baby seal -- and not only was the man not receiving help, people were seeking to avoid him.Kenan Pala felt this was not right and immediately founded Kids4Community. That was three years ago, and he is now that organization's CEO. Last month they made 2000 hygene kits, and 500 "bags of hope" for distribution. The group conducts a school supply drive, and takes on disaster relief. They are actively hurting someone they are supposed to love. Phyllis Schlafly, Michelle Backman, Pete Knight, Newt Gingrich... the list goes on.Now add "Straight Pride" organizer Mylinda Mason to that list. Her son Matthew is gay.  And he is on with us today!The Stanislaus County Straight Pride Parade/Event was submitted last month for a permit by a group calling itself the National Straight Pride Coalition. He said of raising a young transgender child:"My God, if you’re 3 years old and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way, or you think you’re a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make that determination then — ‘Okay, well then you’re going to be a boy or a girl,’ whatever the case may be. It’s sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.” Tonight, we talk about both the misinformation of his statement, the backlash it has received and the talking points in the counter information that has come out, and his apology.Lopez stated yesterday, "“The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were,” he said. “I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful.”We feature singer activist Brody Ray, who wrote a rebuttal of Lopez's original remarks.Brody Levesque co-hosts.
