Today is the made-up holiday known as Festivus! It came from Seinfeld, the TV show from the 90s. I liked it well enough in the day, but this isn't about the show. The holiday itself is just the kind of rebellion I like. The traditional holidays don't mean much to me (do they really, to anyone?) I just enjoy the idea of a nonsensical reason to air our grievances and salute feats of strength, while sidestepping the traditions of Christmas, Chanukkah, Kwanzaa or whatever other holiday was concocted to get in on the commercialization and gift giving. So, you are welcome to call in today to air your grievance or salute a particular feat of strength. Above all, we'll have fun today, my last show before actually taking off a full week! So come hang, and let's bid good riddance to 2022... a year that I can truly so wasn't as bad as 2020 or 2021, so we've got that going for us...

The countdown to the end of the year is on, and today is our last Thursday with Howie Klein in 2022 and in the 117th Congress. When we next convene, it'll be January 5. The 118th Congress will be the first in almost two decades without Nancy Pelosi leading the House Democrats. The torch will have been passed to Hakeem Jefferies, certainly ushering in a new era. But to make matters even worse, the Republicans will be in charge of the House, with a new Speaker, who may or may not be Kevin McCarthy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy left Ukraine yesterday for the first time since the Russians invaded in February. He came to Washington DC for that Oval Office meeting he had long wanted, and to deliver an historical address to a joint meeting of Congress. And more transcripts are released from the House Select Committee investigating Jan 6... though as of midday on Thursday, we still haven't seen the full report. Perhaps it'll be delivered by a bearded man in a red suit late Saturday night?

We last spoke one year ago today, and I'm thrilled they've returned for another visit in what is now a holiday tradition on the Nicole Sandler Show. The Marsh Family is Ben and Danielle and their four kids, Alfie Thomas, Ella and Tess, and they're the 21st century's answer to the Von Trapp Family Singers, without the drama. I can't think of a family I'd rather celebrate with this time of year (with the exception of my own). I'll share a small sample of their brilliant talents today, but encourage you to go to their YouTube channel and spend a while with this lovely family. By the way, they work miracles in bringing smiles to the faces of whomever is watching their work. An extra added bonus: this year, the Marsh Family's songs helped educate me regarding England's political and labor issues... it's nice to see it's not only the US suffering through all of this nonsense!

Today we salute the actions of the progressive activists who paved the way, focusing on one who was in the thick of it all. David Fenton's new book is "The Activist's Media Handbook: Lessons from Fifty Years as a Progressive Agitator". We'll discuss the history he was part of, and try to get to the bottom of why things are as they are now... David Fenton was there, working on the No Nukes concerts, in the campaign to free Nelson Mandela and end apartheid, legalize marijuana and end racist drug laws. He worked at High Times and Rolling Stone Magazine, and hung out with Abbie Hoffman and other legendary activists. I'm thinking our conversation will be part memories and reminiscences, and part primer to light a fire under the people who should carry the torch today and going forward.

This would be hysterically funny if it weren't so tragically sad! The attention whore Donald Trump was promoting a huge announcement for today, with people watching his sputtering newly-launched 2024 campaign wondering how he'll try to redeem himself. But that wasn't it at all! Donald Trump is, above all else, a con man. And today's actually not-so-big announcement was merely another way to bilk his followers of more money while showing absolutely no shame. It'd be quite amazing if it weren't so tragically sad! Perhaps Howie Klein will have a few things to say about Don's latest con. Or the recent polls showing TFG getting trounced in a 24 primary cage match by the other Floriduh man, Rhonda Santis. But I must revert to his other nickname, Governor Death Sentence, when I tell you about his newest con... trying to out wingnut TFG by announcing an investigation into the companies that created the Covid 19 vaccines (that saved millions of lives??), and his formation of a new anti-science alternative to the CDC and FDA. I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried! I'm quite preoccupied with both of those surreal stories that cannot really be happening.... perhaps Howie Can tell us the latest about the former crypto-King, fighting extradition from the Bahamas, Scam Bankman Greed/Fraud.

Today's guest is a long-time friendly acquaintance of mine who, shockingly, also hit the dead zone when applying for jobs the last time he found himself without a job. He stumbled into a new career as a headhunter, and wrote a book to share his new-found expertise with the rest of us. Today I'm joined by Rob Barnett, former big shot at MTV/VHI, Amazon/Audible, past president of CBS Radio, founder/creator of My Damn Channel and lots more, author of "Next Job, Best Job: A Headhunter's 11 Strategies to Get Hired Now". I promise some entertaining stories and strategies to help you finally get that next, best job.

The longest-serving one is Leonard Peltier, a Native American activist who's been held since 1975! He just turned 78, is in failing health, and the government has resisted calls for his release for decades. Today, I'll share the latest on the efforts to free Peltier, including a letter from seven US Senators sent to President Biden just two weeks ago, urging clemency. And we'll go back to my show when it was on Air America Radio... the date was July 31, 2009, when I spoke with Peltier's attorney, singer-songwriter-activist Bruce Cockburn and activist Harvey Wasserman. A lot to talk about on this Wednesday, the day the death toll in the US from Covid-19 passed 100,000. The president is melting down even more than usual because Twitter finally fact checked two of his tweets. We'll have the latest news, a few thoughts from me and of course, something funny. Then we'll get serious. My guest today is David Silverman, former president of American Atheists for 18 years, until a woman made a MeToo accusation against him, and he was fired. Two more allegations were made by two other women, and Dave Silverman was relieved of his duty running another Atheist organization. Silverman contends that these are trumped up charges and, while he admits to less than perfect behavior in his personal relationship, he denies any accusation of assault or harassment. We'll have a frank, honest discussion about the good, the bad and the ugly around the MeToo movement.

After our usual first half-hour business of the latest news, something funny and perhaps a bit of outrage, we're joined again by Don Siegelman, the former Democratic Governor of Alabama, who was targeted by Karl Rove and prosecuted on trumped up bribery charges and sent to prison. His new book about his ordeal, "Stealing Our Democracy" is due out in mid-June. He'll be back around publication date to go deep on his story, but today he joins us as someone who won elections against all odds with advice on how the Democrats can win in 2020.
