The landscape of the interior design business has been altered over the last few years. The days of buying home furnishings through a designer that were considered “trade only”, meaning items could only be purchased from a designer, have changed. Manufacturers almost exclusively sold to designers and brick and mortar furniture stores. There was generally a set retail price and designers either sold “at retail” or offered a discount. Furniture stores generally could purchase the items at a better price due to volume but didn’t normally sell things as “customized” as a designer would. Fast forward a few years and here are some changes and/or misconceptions: A. Interior Design has gone digital a) The “in-person” designer/client relationship is not necessary. b) E-Design: A client can send photos/measurements and a designer can create a space plan and links to purchase furniture on their own. c) Space planning software – you can upload a photo of a room and a user can see different room arrangements. d) Social media advertising – Furniture can be received quickly at a great price and free shipping. B. The Pros: a) A time saver b) A wide Range of product a) You may see a style you weren’t aware of b) You may see things mixed together that you would have never thought of c) Easy Comparison a) You can look at multiple vendors b) Having a manufacturer and product number can help with the search d) Ease of Accessibility a) You can access your computer from your living room, while waiting to get your oil changed or while lying in bed. e) Sales/Discounts a) Competition is fierce – you can find great deals f) Reviews a) You will hear the good and the bad and this can help you with your decision C. The Cons: a) Seeing something on a screen is not necessarily how it will look in person a) It’s hard to tell the quality  Is the seat comfortable? B.     The Hollywood Sign got a “face lift” from Sherwin Williams and The Hollywood Sign Trust. i.         The Hollywood sign is 450’ wide.  Each letter stands 45’ high and ranges between 31’ and 39’ wide ii.         The sign’s nine letters had all existing coatings removed before being primed and painted. iii.         The sign’s color is Sherwin Williams High Reflective White (SW7757) iv.         The sign was painted with 225 gallons of Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint in Satin. v.         The sign was primed with 105 gallons of Pro-Industrial Pro-Cryl Universal Acrylic primer vi.         The refurbishment took nine weeks to complete

The Designer Experience

August 15th marks our 14th year together as Kandrac &amp; Kole.   It has been quite a journey and similar to that of a marriage and raising a child!  We’ve learned and grown so much in these 14 years and even though there have been some ups and downs, seriously we are luck to say there have been very few downs, it has been a great adventure. Several business owners have shared that they wish they could find someone to share their business with and always ask us what makes it work. 1.  HAVE MUTUAL RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER A.     Understand the strengths and weaknesses each has B.     Build each other up  C.     Forgive mistakes (we ALL make them) D.    Appreciate each other E.     Share responsibility equally 2.  STRUCTURE A.     A business lawyer to structure/contract B.     Accounting C.     Buy/Sell Agreement –A formal agreement that defines exit strategy and ownership succession plans between co-owners of a business.  D.    Life Insurance 3.  BE FLEXIBLE A.     Keep open minds B.     Give and take C.     Negotiate when needed D.    A bad mood is only “temporary” 4.  BE SUPPORTIVE - COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER A.     Honor personal needs and time B.     Pick up the slack when needed C.     Encourage each other – business and personal D.    Remember, you’re on the same team 5.  BE HONEST - IDENTIFY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES A.     This can be uncomfortable at times but voice a frustration or uneasiness B.     Talk it through C.     Move on from a disagreement 6.  HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR A.     It’s not cancer, It’s only interior design B.     Laugh at your mistakes C.     Have fun We feel infinitely blessed to be living our passion.  A big thanks to the outstanding people we work with, the service from our vendors, the clients who allow us to work in their homes, the brilliant design industry we are fortunate to be a part of, Amy and Lisa, our office mates who do such a great job for us and keep Kandrac &amp; Kole running smoothly, and most important of all, to our husbands who are our biggest supporters!!

The 6 Secrets to a Successful Business Partnership

Intro a) What are considered “performance” fabrics b) Properties of Crypton and Sunbrella c) Designing with pets and kids in mind d) Beach House Rental e) Outdoor products II. Performance a) “Performance can mean many things: abrasion, stain resistance, light fastness, flame retardance.” b) Abrasion:  The Wyzenbeek testing method is the most common abrasion testing method in the U.S. A fabric is stretched onto a machine and rubbed back and forth, with signs of wearability checked every 5,000 rubs. c) Stain Resistance – Crypton, Indoor/Outdoor/Microfiber d) Light Fastness - To evaluate fade resistance, a strip of fabric is placed in a large device with part of the fabric protected by a card. The remaining fabric gets a 40-hour blast of light exposure, and results are measured from 1 to 5.  A score of 4 is generally considered good for normal residential use. e) Flame Retardance - Almost all the tests in this category test for flammability by holding a fabric to a cigarette or flame to see how it responds. III. Best places to use performance fabric a) Kitchen and Dining Rooms b) Family Room Upholstery c) Custom shower curtains d) Sunny spots e) Outdoor cushions, awnings, curtains IV. Crypton  - each fiber of Crypton Fabric is encapsulated with a patented technology that never breaks down its resistance to stains, moisture, mildew and odors. This protects the fabric from spills and keeps stains from setting in the foam of the cushions. V. Sunbrella – UV and fade resistant, mold and mildew resistant, bleach cleanable. VI. Designing with pet/kids a) Kids:   choose eco-friendly, non-toxic furnishings, bedding and paint to make the environment healthy. b) For a family room, use an upholstered (crypton or sunbrella) ottoman instead of wood and use tray for drinks, remote, etc. c) Leather - Fur and hair won't stick to it. You can simply vacuum it away and use a cleaner to keep the leather supple.  Leather does scratch but if you don’t mind, it will develop a patina that some people think looks great. But if you want your leather to stay pristine, keep your pets off of it. d) If you have a shedding animal, match the fabric to their hair color. e) As a general rule for choosing pet-friendly fabrics, look for fabrics that have a tight weave and a pattern.  Stay away from: Velvet, chenille and silk. f) Use pet covers for sofas and bedding.  Good ones at Chewy.com and Amazon. A show where you can find antiques, furniture, rugs, artwork, mirrors, clothing, jewelry, boots, one of a kind pieces and so much more.  Round Top is located in between Austin and Houston, Texas and started in 1968.   The population of this area is 90, but in the Spring and Fall about 200,000 descend upon the area.  It spans over a twenty mile stretch.  Fly into Austin or Houston and rent a car. 3.  HOW TO NAVIGATE A.    Go with a seasoned professional - Lucas Eilers Design – Sarah Eilers – Houston Interior Designer                i.         Sarah was the ultimate hostess, picking us up at the airport, taking us to some of her favorite shops in Houston and then to tour her amazing office in the Houston Design Center. 1.  INTRO We recently attended our 2nd immersion event with Designers Today Magazine and PBM Events – this time in Asheville, NC. Designer Experience Asheville

1.  INTRO We are just back from Napa Valley, CA where we were invited as special guests of Design Hounds and Signature Kitchen Suite to be a part of a three-day brand immersion trip to learn all about the new SKS showroom and their luxury lien of appliances. A.    Background – Part 1 – Design Hounds i. We have been very fortunate to be a part of Modenus Blogtour and Design Hounds trips around the country and in Europe. Design Hounds and Modenus are run by a woman by the name of Veronika Eagleson. She has done an incredible job of curating a large network of design professionals who share best practices, design finds and product knowledge via social media and their own design businesses. These designers are also known as micro-influencers who align brands like Signature Kitchen Suite with truly relevant audiences. And you thought we just made homes look pretty! B.    Background – Part 2 – SKS  i. Signature Kitchen Suite is the new luxury brand from LG Electronics. The Napa showroom that we visited was a 2 ½ year dream in the making. It was one of the most impressive showrooms we have ever been in complete with an appliance playground, a massive kitchen for inhouse cooking shows and training, conference rooms, dining rooms, an killer bar etc. The SKS team wine and dined us and told us their story… 2.  TRUE TO FOOD A.     Storytelling - Before SKS sells you an appliance, they tell you a story. They are all about being what they have coined “TRUE TO FOOD”. If you go to their website, (signaturekitchensuite.com), watch the film series all about their deep respect for food and where it is sourced. You will see stories about cheesemakers, breadmakers, fishermen, vineyard owners and more. It is so cool. So if you have a deep respect for food, where it comes from and who grows or produces it, then it makes senses that you would continue that respect for how you cook the food. This is what SKS does. B.     “Technicurean” – SKS believes that being on top of technology is a luxury experience. They also believe that people are willing to pay more for performance and technology. This is a cooking technique where food is vacuum sealed and then submerged in water and slow-cooked at a constant, precise temperature until it’s perfectly cooked. So for example, you won’t see that gray to pink radiant in your meat because it’s cooked evenly edge to edge. You can cook chicken, fish, eggs, and vegetables all sous vide. D.     All SKS appliances have a 2 year warranty with an additional 1 year added as soon as you register your appliances. E.     Their average repair time is 3 days and they have 24/7 service. F.     The 48” range has an articulating handle that helps you to open and close the oven door. G.     The new column refrigeration is built so that you can refit any built in refrigerator without tearing down cabinets.
