Nicholas Breakspear was elected pope in 1154, but his story started long before that. The son of a local churchman near St Albans, he would battle his way across Europe to defend and develop Christianity, facing war in Scandinavia and the Moors in the Iberian Peninsula. But it was after he took the throne of St Peter as Adrian IV that he would face his greatest threat: Frederick Barbarossa, who was determined to restore the Holy Roman Empire to its former greatness.In this talk, given recently at our Annual General Meeting, Adrian Waddingham opens the archives to tell the story of a man who rose from humble beginnings to glorious power – and yet has been all but forgotten ever since. At more than thirty-one years (1903-1935), Cardinal Bourne’s is the longest reign of any Archbishop of Westminster. Today, with the possible exception of his turbulent relationship with Bishop Amigo of Southwark, Bourne is virtually unknown. That obscurity is unmerited. His time at Westminster covered some of the most momentous events of the modern English Catholic Church: the Education Question, Modernism, the First World War, the Irish Troubles and Treaty, the emergence of the Labour Party, the General Strike, the growing menace of the European dictators and the stirrings of ecumenism and Catholic social policy. By temperament and preference, Bourne played a quiet role in all these issues, but it was neither passive nor negligible. In difficult times, he led the Catholic Church conscientiously and well. In this presentation, Fr Mark Vickers, historian and Catholic priest of Westminster diocese, focuses on Cardinal Bourne’s relationship with his clergy, including his founding of Wonersh Seminary. He founded a new chapel in Reading, the first purpose-built one since the Reformation, which he called The Chapel of the Resurrection. Basing her talk on letters extant between Longuet and his Bishop, Lindsay gives a fascinating insight into this unusual and, in the end, tragic life. We are grateful to Dr Hazard, of the School of History, University College Dublin, for providing us with this recording for our podcast which relates to a unique collection of letters written by Loreto Sisters during the Spanish Civil War. Their Irish Mother Provincial, Mother Baptist Gibney and some of the Loreto Sisters in Spain, were British passport holders.  He discusses how the British embassy in Madrid, the Royal Navy;and the Scottish Ambulance Unit helped the Loreto Sisters to organise their evacuation from the Spanish capital. Reading Abbey, a Cluniac monastery, was founded in 1121 by Henry I, the son of William the Conqueror, in remembrance of his own son William, who had died tragically at sea. Little remains now of what was once the largest and one of the most prestigious abbeys in England. John and Lindsay Mullaney have made a special study of the abbey and give a detailed account of the background to its foundation, its cult of St James the Great, its architecture, music, art and liturgy. 26 Fr Richard Finn OP, a member of the Dominican house in Oxford, gives a lucid and informative account of the establishment of the Dominican Order in England. He covers their growth up to the time of the Reformation, their years in exile on the continent and their return to England in the early 1800s, fleeing persecution there. The support of the wealthy convert William Leigh enabled them to found a flourishing noviciate house in Gloucestershire, in addition to houses in London, Newcastle, Leicester and Oxford. Eventually they were able to establish daughter houses in South Africa, Granada, Edinburgh and Cambridge. They continue today to pursue their charism of preaching and teaching. St Alphege was born near Bath in 954 and died a martyr 1011.  Little known today, his life is however an example and inspiration.  Dr Giles Mercer, former headmaster of Stonyhurst and Prior Park Schools and author of a recent biography of Bishop William Brownlow, became interested in St Alphege when he became a parishioner of St Alphege Catholic Church in Bath.  In this talk he gives interesting background information on Anglo-Saxon Britain and then outlines the life of St Alphege from his birth into a relatively well to do family, his call to the contemplative life, his becoming a monk of Deerhurst near Tewkesbury, his move to the monastery at Glastonbury, his promotion to Abbot of Winchester and then to Archbishop of Canterbury.  His martyrdom at the hands of the vikings took place as he refused to allow the ransom money asked for his life to be raised from the poor of his diocese.  St Anselm said of him ‘He who dies for justice, dies for Christ’. Bishop Laurence Walter Youens was a convert to the Catholic faith from Anglicanism, and was ordained priest in 1901 in High Wycombe, the first Catholic priest ordained there since the Reformation. After a period of missionary work in North Africa, he returned to the diocese of Northampton and remained for the rest of his life, being especially devoted to the education of poor boys. At the age of 60 he was asked to be Bishop of the relatively poor diocese, which through the lean years of the 1920s and 30s was home to an increasing number of Catholics seeking work in the new towns such as Luton. He oversaw the establishment of new churches and Mass centres in the diocese as the Catholic population grew rapidly during these years. He died in November 1939 while writing a Bishop’s letter encouraging all members of his diocese to have courage in the years of war to come. He is especially to be remembered fpr promoting the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, celebrating the first Mass in the Slipper Chapel since the Reformation on the Feast of the Assumption 1934. Established in the 19th century, Downside is home to one of the best collections of religious manuscripts in the world. A recent Heritage Lottery Fund grant has enabled the library and archives to be modernised. Dr Simon brings us up to date with many interesting insights into the work that has been involved, and gives an outline of future hopes and plans. In this fascinating talk she leads us into this hidden world. With precision and scholarship supported by examples from the texts, we begin to understand something of the terror and sadness in which our Elizabethan forebears lived, a world in which drama was one of the very few mediums which gave the possibility of an outward expression of an interior faith, if one knew how to listen. He learnt joinery as a trade and put his skills to use in fashioning the most ingenious priest-holes in England during penal times. Finally he was caught and tortured, giving nothing away to his tormentors. He died under torture. Canonised as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales his story makes fascinating and harrowing reading. How many of us would be prepared to follow the Lord to the Cross in the way he did? Tony Reynolds is the author of a new biography of the saint, published by Gracewing. St Nicholas Owen: Priest-hole Maker by Tony Reynolds

The son of a Congregational minister from Leeds, Rousell David Byles was influenced by High Church ideas at school and then at Oxford. He began training for Anglican ministry during which time he converted to Catholicism and was subsequently ordained a Catholic priest at the Beda College, Rome. He spent some years ministering in Essex before taking a holiday in America to be present at the marriage of his brother. By a chance of providence the ship on which he was due to sail was changed at the last minute and he found himself on the Titanic’s doomed maiden voyage. Eye witness accounts relate how he led prayers and hymns, heard confessions, and led steerage passengers to safety on the lifeboats, twice refusing a place in the lifeboats for himself. Pope St Pius X declared that he died ‘a true martyr for charity’. In this moving talk, Fr Stephen Hoyle outlines the life and death of this hero of the faith with detail and compassion. There are approximately 20,000 extant letters written by Blessed John Henry Newman. These have been gathered together in 32 volumes by the long and painstaking work of members of the Birmingham Oratory. Mgr Strange, theologian and Newman scholar, has recently published a book entitled ‘J H Newman – A Portrait in Letters’ through Oxford University Press. In this engaging and informative talk, he speaks of the demanding but richly rewarding work involved in this endeavour and he gives us some fascinating insights into the life and writings of the famous convert and Cardinal of the 19th century. The Letters of John Henry Newman – A Portrait – by Mgr Roderick Strange

Glastonbury is the oldest shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in England, pre-dating the better-known Marian shrine of Walsingham by many 100s of years. Since the destruction of Glastonbury Abbey at the Reformation, the shrine’s Marian origins have been overshadowed by the legends surrounding the person of King Arthur and those of St Joseph of Arimathea and the ‘Glastonbury thorn’. With reference to the archeology, architecture, extant medieval texts and artifacts, Dr Timothy Hopkinson-Ball, vice-chairman of the Glastonbury Antiquarian Society and Project Archivist at Downside Abbey, attempts to unpick the legend from historical fact. In this lucid and informative talk, he shows that there is evidence for a very early devotion to the Blessed Virgin at Glastonbury, which, with the canonical restoration of the shrine in 1955, is continuing to flourish today. An Overview of Devotion to Our Lady of Glastonbury by Dr Timothy Hopkinson-Ball

Dr James Hagerty gives a detailed talk on the contribution of military chaplains in the First World War.  Roman Catholic chaplains were first commissioned for the British Army after the Crimean War, in 1858.  At the outbreak of WWI therefore there were some experienced army chaplains who had served in Boer War and other conflicts between 1858 and 1914.  Accompanying the 80,000 members of the British Expeditionary Force which left for the Western front at the beginning of the First World War were a total of 53 commissioned chaplains, 10 of which were Catholic.   Evidently, this was far from sufficient and the early months of the war saw numerous priests offering themselves to the war effort to accompany the army, navy or air force, as acting non-commissioned chaplains.  They became a familiar sight on the front, on the battle ships, and with our fledgling air force, some paying the ultimate sacrifice as they sought to provide the Sacraments to the living, the wounded and the dying.  Dr Hagerty gives many examples of particular chaplains something of whose lives are known to us.  A moving and informative talk on today’s anniversary of the end of the conflict which many view as the worst in modern times. David Jones (1895-1974) was an artist and poet who contributed significantly to Catholic war literature. He was present at the front throughout most of the First World War only leaving the front when wounded, and then returning. His experiences marked his poetry and art for the rest of his life. His best known works are the very long poems In Parenthesis and the Anathemata neither of which are immediately easy to read although there is a narrative flow. Dr Coghill gives an overview of the theology of sacrifice as ‘sign’ as expressed by Fr Maurice de la Taille SJ, which informs David Jones’ writing. She believes his writing can only be properly understood in the light of this theology. Jones became a Catholic in 1919 around which time he met Eric Gill, the typographer, stone carver and artist. Jones subsequently became a member of the Guild of St Joseph &amp; St Dominic – a group of Catholic artists and craftspeople living in community in Ditchling and later, in South Wales. Some time after this period Jones lived alone, convalescing from his war experiences which continued to haunt him, in Sidmouth, Devon, during which time In Parenthesis was published and he began to write the Anathemata. Dr Coghill examines what we know of his 5 years in Sidmouth (1935-40) and argues that this little known period of his life was significant, not least because it allowed his health to improve sufficiently for him to return to London, where he continue to live and work for the rest of his life. Music, missals, primers, chapel architecture and decoration, official and unofficial records of one sort or another, contribute to our knowledge of the quite elaborate rites that took place in wealthy country houses, despite unfavourable circumstances. We also get an impression of the secrecy and isolation under which priests laboured in order to bring the sacraments to Catholics in towns and villages. A clear and concise overview of the celebration of the Eucharist from the time of its foreshadowing in the Old Testament with the figure of Melchisedek (Genesis 14: 18-20). Fr Peter Jones shows that there is a core and constant ritual at the heart of all celebrations of the Eucharist, but the manner in which it has been celebrated over the centuries, and is celebrated today, shows great diversity.  Fr Peter leads us from the OT prefigurations of the Eucharist, through the several New Testament accounts of the Last Supper to the celebrations of the early church, known to us from the Didache and onwards.  He looks at the diversity of liturgical rites as they develop in the patriachal churches, and in more detail at the practice in the West where the Roman rite is only one of several in use.  He leads up to the present day and the recent instructions from Rome to allow the more general use of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (the Latin rite) and he comments on a little known instruction of Cardinal Ratzinger with regard to the Anaphora of Addai and Mari which does not include an institution narrative. Br Michael Curran is a De La Salle brother.  The Institute was founded in France in the 17th century by St John Baptiste de la Salle, princially for the education of boys from poor backgrounds.  Br Michael looks at the history of the Stations of the Cross at St Augustine’s Catholic Church, High Wycombe, reputedly carved by Eric Gill and concludes that although Eric Gill almost certainly provided the drawings, they would most likely have been carved by one of his companion wood carvers. Br Michael looks at the origin of the Stations as a devotion and in detail at these particular Stations, which reveal Gill’s distinctive style, and occasionally subversive nature.
