#58 - Why My Monthly Subscription Boxes Failed and What I'd Do Different Next Time

Here's a super short episode, only 3 minutes in length. I posted this quote on my personal Instagram a couple months ago (@bigran82). I wrote a long caption explaining my thoughts on it and how it relates to my life. I turned that caption into audio and now it's available through my podcast.  Here's the text version of this episode:  So much work over the past week, and it continues into another late one tonight.  I think we are all lucky at times, but no one is lucky 24/7. Someone called me lucky again the other day, because sometimes my social media gives off the impression like I don't work at all, like I'm just traveling all the time or eating at Chipotle everyday or just sleeping. Like that's all I do. Haha  I just work hard behind the scenes, although if you've followed my Snapchat (minitruckscene) for the past few years, you'd see what my daily life is like.  I really enjoy my life, but 80% of the time it would look extremely boring from an outsider's perspective. Like here's my computer, here's a book, here's my food, here's a movie I'm watching, here's the orders I'm shipping, here's the music I'm listening to, etc.  But that 20% or less of my time overpowers the majority. It blinds people and makes them forget what my daily life is like. Most of my waking hours are spent either: at my desk on my computer, in bed or on the couch updating social media accounts &amp; responding to emails, or in some random place working from my laptop.  But that's boring so I don't show it all the time. By not showing it all the time, I might have this image sometimes of extreme success with little to no work. Far from the truth. And I know I can make things look easy at times, but it took many years of work for it to appear that way.  So maybe I should start posting more of my daily life (even though I think I'm extremely transparent on all social networks) so people can better understand what it takes to do the things I do.  It's not easy by any means, and I don't think it's for most people, but it's 100% available to everyone. I just had a stronger push to go for it, and that opened my eyes. Maybe some day I can give that same push to hundreds or thousands of people.  What are your thoughts on all of this?  Back to work at 2:04am, at my desk, that I've been at for 4 hours, and before that I was on the couch updating social media til I passed out for a few hours. If someone comes to me and says they want to own their own business someday, but they have no skills and they have no idea what to do, the first thing I ask them is, "Do you enjoy being on a computer for long periods of time?"  If they say no, I think they should be trying as many new things as possible to see what sticks and what they enjoy doing. Almost anything can be monetized at some point. But if they say yes, and they also say they are pretty tech-savvy, I instantly tell them they should learn web design.  Once they start going down the web design path, they are going to have a million questions. And one that comes up often is: is it cheating for a web designer to be using themes/templates on client sites, or even their own website?  It really comes down to who you ask, what their background is, and what type of business they are trying to run. My short answer is: you should definitely be starting every website with a premium theme. And the rule is, no more than 30 hashtags, because people always abuse things like this, so they had to put a limit on it. But there's a loophole... And the absolutely, wildly terrifying thing is that I think that could happen next year. Stepping out of that comfort zone, ya, that's a scary thing.Without a doubt, I think that just seeing those goals in front of you when you wake up and when you go to sleep are powerful. And it's not magic, it's just literally seeing your goals everyday and that's a simple reminder of what you're working towards. Ask yourself, "Have I done anything today to work towards that goal?" Something about a small living space really interests me. The idea of just using it to do the basic things in life. Most of the successful people I follow or have read about usually have a specific morning routine that helps them accomplish more or increases their happiness throughout the day. In this episode, I explain what I'm currently doing during the first couple hours of each day. RWR-015: The Most Dangerous Risk of All

Today's featured guest is Andrea Lake. Back when she was 18, she decided to skip college and just go straight into building a business. Her first business started as small as a business can start, but it still grew pretty quick, especially for someone right out of high school.  A few years later, Andrea decided to give clothing a chance and built her first apparel business. I'll let her explain all the various things she did with the clothing lines, but this was also around the time when she had some stickers printed too.  In the late 90's, she ended up starting a whole business around just stickers. At the time of this recording, she actually started 14 companies!  More recently, she has a new company called Lessons.biz where she teaches others exactly how to build a tshirt empire along side her business partner Dan Caldwell. Dan was a co-founder of the huge clothing brand Tapout, so obviously you know they are more than qualified to be teaching on this topic.  Anyways, we talk about various ways to hyper-accelerate a brand, why stickers are like minting money, when to hire people, why competition is a good thing, and how you can easily prove if your business idea is a viable concept or not. I will never be short of money again. I know that I can just make something and go sell it now. I had very recently quit smoking pot, which made me far more productive. One night, I got a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada, invited over one of my best friends, and sat down and came up with like 200 slogans. And then I chose 98 of them and launched the line with 98 slogans, which is ridiculous, it's way too many, but it worked out well. We had a connection with Blink 182, but they saw my stuff at Warped Tour when they were not famous yet, and they were like, "We love your stuff." And I'm like, "Here's a bag full of stuff, just wear it on stage today." And they felt this loyalty to my brand. Every entrepreneur has this moment where you just feel like your company is gonna fail. And the people that make it in life, and certainly in business, are the people that just keep trying something else and will pivot with it and will not stick really strongly to the concept that they think should work. It's like the Craigslist model, where you don't have to have the most beautiful thing, but you do have to have something that is very functional. Stickers are like magic, it's like minting money. People buy them, you print them for them, they get the stickers, they give them away for free, and then they order more. I created lessons.biz because I was so tired of seeing people on the internet that were making 100% of their money from selling products that just teach people how to make money. Like these people literally don't know how to make money, they know how to con people into giving them money. There is actually a formula on how to run most companies. I think that for me, working on one thing solely is ineffective because I will choke it to death, I will worry about it, I'll obsess on it. Whereas, if I have multiple things going, I can work on whatever feels best in whichever company, and I don't worry as much. I think worrying is a really damaging thing. I think it's underrated because people see it as normal, but I think it's super problematic to spend your time worrying. In general, when you're starting out, until you have a company that's supporting you, obviously you shouldn't spread yourself too thin. If somebody isn't competing against you, there's probably a good reason why it's an ineffective space to be in. If you have something that a million people are doing, it means that a million people want whatever that product is. So you just have to do it better than them, or market better than them. You can pack boxes better than anybody else at your business, but is that how you want to be spending your time today? Put a dollar figure on your time. If it's not something that is making my company money, or something that I truly must do, or something that I love, somebody else should be doing it. If you can't make your business work with a few thousand dollars starting out, it's probably not going to work, and more money isn't the answer. Make money first. If you can make money first, then you know you have a viable concept. You have to prove your concept first. And you have to know that your concept is something that people will actually pick up their wallet out of their pocket and take money out of it and hand it to you. Not just tell you that they'll buy something, but actually physically buy something. I knew nothing when I started out, and I went about it the really hard way. You will hyper accelerate the growth of any company if you're surrounded by like-minded people that are entrepreneurs, even if they have really diverse business backgrounds compared to you. I think every entrepreneur should have a really good filter between what they're thinking and what they actually say. The day that you launch your website is the worst it's ever gonna look, because you're going to improve upon it from there. And then we extended that out and said, the day that you launch any business is the worst that that business is every going to be. So stop waiting until everything is perfect. Just launch something and start making money and then correct from there. Don't be good, don't be great, it is your job to be extraordinary and become irreplaceable. Everything that I talk about, everything that I teach is something that I've personally gone through. How bad do you really want what you say you want? There's a price behind everything that you want. Everything that we ask for, we're not really prepared to do what's behind it in order to get there. You've been in these particular conditions in your life simply because you're a direct contradiction to what you say you want. If you look at most of us, we want one thing, but everything else about us (mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally) is the direct opposite of the thing that we want. I don't believe in wasting time. If I can't change the way you see it, we probably can't change the way it is. Results are results. You can't argue with results. If you're going to do anything that a lot of people are doing, you need to first and foremost find your voice. How do you do this different? What particular problem or issue can you solve and for who? Take what is and make it better. Google gives me a window to the world. I'm really big on maintaining a level of peace within myself. I think the best entrepreneurs in the world are those that can remain mentally, spiritually, and emotionally peaceful even in the midst of chaos. There's nothing like seeing a person transform. There have been other people I've not had the privilege to meet personally that I consider mentors. A principle is only as good as the person that it comes into contact with. If I don't learn to take care of me, then I am of no good for anybody else. I can never give what I don't have. Before we can get you to where you're going, we first gotta locate where you are. If I told you that you weren't going to make money for the next two years, would you still pursue this? When you stop chasing money and you start chasing passion and purpose, the money just seems to chase you. I'm going to do it because I love it and because it's the only thing that moves me. Once I got introduced to the world of entrepreneurship, I've never been the same since. It's funny how randomly losing your job motivates you. Everything that you don't think you can do, you figure out a way to do it. When I think about "Risk Without Regret," I think about life and how we play life so safe sometimes. Sometimes we play life so safe that when we look back we ask ourselves, "why didn't I do that?" You're not getting out of this thing alive. You're not going to get a second chance at this life. Calculated risks are very important in life. There's no way that you can keep talking about a thing and you don't finally at some point take action on it. Because when you have a deep-rooted desire, it will not let you rest. The reason most people don't act on a desire is because it's too big for them at the moment. Not understanding that you only see a vision from its end result. I may not be able to fulfill this entire vision today, but what can I do today. When you initiate, direction comes. Sometimes we neglect the baby steps and the growth process. I think the entrepreneur life has some sacrifices. There are some things that you're gonna have to do that the next person is not willing to do. The reward is going to feel so much greater than what I feel right now. Win at life, don't just survive. If it's not going exactly the way you want it to go right now, don't quit. Don't give up because every great person that has reached anything, they have a dark story somewhere. I have not found one extremely successful person to where I couldn't dig somewhere in their past and find something that they went through. The beautiful thing about when you come out of something and it's great and you get everything that you ever desired, you don't even remember how painful it was before. I remember that feeling of not knowing what's next. And sometimes I take myself there because I never want to put myself in that position to where somebody else is able to dictate my life in that way. And that keeps me pushing every single day. It's a little bit difficult in the beginning, but if you fully turn this page, there's always something better coming. Any doors that have ever closed in my life, no matter how hard they were, the next door that opened was so much better. RWR-007: Always Deliver More Than Expected

When it comes to your small business, trying to be everything to everybody is the perfect plan for failure. If you try to offer everything for the masses, you'll likely attract nobody.  Figure out exactly what you want to do, based around something you enjoy doing, then decide exactly who you want to create this product/service for. Once you know who it's for, then you can go find those people in the world. Then talk to them, talk to as many people as you can in your target audience, and figure out what it is that they really want. It usually ends up being a problem that they need a solution for. Reveal the problem, then develop a cure.  Listen to this episode and see how I try to use that mindset throughout all of the businesses that I run. When it comes to your small business, trying to be everything to everybody is the perfect plan for failure. If you try to offer everything for the masses, you'll likely attract nobody. Figure out exactly what you want to do, based around something you enjoy doing, then decide exactly who you want to create this product/service for. Once you know who it's for, then you can go find those people in the world. Then talk to them, talk to as many people as you can in your target audience, and figure out what it is that they really want. It usually ends up being a problem that they need a solution for. This week's guest is Pete Sisco from Resilient Personal Freedom. In 1996, he decided to invest $300 in himself and start his first online business. Five years later, he monetized that website. 15 years later, it has made him millions, and he still consistently makes an income from it, among other online businesses.  After living the conventional life in Idaho with his wife for many years, and after his 6 kids grew up and moved out, Pete and his wife were ready for a different lifestyle. Knowing that their online income source was portable, they decided to sell everything and live out of their suitcases while traveling the world. 10 years later, they're still at it.  In fact, he did the interview at the place they're currently staying at in Ireland. We talk about how technology is helping people make predictable monthly income online, why minimalism is a smart way to live, why working in a cubicle is actually more of a risk, how you can achieve an insane amount of personal freedom, and so much more. I've had a lifelong passion for the concept of living in freedom. The only passive income I know about is inheritance. You don't have to reinvent wheels, you just have to apply fundamentals in ways that are effective. We're living in a time now, where people can take risks like this, like being completely independent and having a lot more personal freedom. And the risk is actually hugely mitigated. There's 10,000 ways to reliably make money online. When people talk about big dreams, they get discouraged. Find something where you can make solid, reliable money and then use that money to do the dream life. There's this explosion of technology that is changing the world and a lot of people are threatened by it. But at the same time, there is enough technology that any individual can set himself up to make a reliable, durable, predictable income every month that's substantial. People start to realize that more than half of the stuff they're paying for is related to just having their job. The guy trapped in the cubicle is getting to be the anomaly. I like keeping the business the size where I run the business and it doesn't run me and I have maximum personal freedom. There's never been less risk than there is now. I can tell ya, when you get it working and you realize how free a person you can be, it's absolutely intoxicating. There's actually an adjustment period to get your head around the fact that you can basically do whatever you want. You can't do it overnight, but you really can engineer a lifestyle that gives you whatever amount of freedom you want. Offer something of quality, do what you say you're gonna do, and treat people right. The things that work online, the fundamentals, are the things that worked 100 years ago. And they'll work 100 years from today. If you want to sleep well at night, spend time constructing a business that has durable elements to it that will offer honest value and keep offering. You have to be in the game before you get lucky. There's just nothing that delivers the independence and the personal freedom that having an online business does. I've never met anyone who doesn't have a skill, an ability, or at the very least a passion that can't be of service to somebody who would be happy to pay money for it. If you had all the money that you ever needed, if you were 100% debt-free, and you had money in the bank that was going to last you for the rest of your life, you just didn't have to think about it, what would you do? What would you want to do every day? Some people climb the ladder of success only to discover you put it against the wrong wall. -Joseph Campbell That's the thing about the online world, it's a big transparent economy and the answers are right there. I'm very, incredibly introverted at the heart of me, and that obviously held me back in business for awhile. But I just learned to pick my spots. I've learned to do things that I have to do to win. That doesn't mean it has to be comfortable. At the end of the day, I had to change dramatically to have what most other people will never have. You can either believe that life happens to you or life happens for you. And I just choose to believe that life happens for me. Shitty stuff happens to you to make you stronger and make you become better. At that time, I didn't have the vision I have today. I just wanted to be something different. I believe that every decision happens in a moment. When you have the right mindset, you're not gonna win every battle, but you're gonna win the war. The hardest thing to put money into is yourself. Knowledge is not power. Applied knowledge is power. Investing in yourself, through any mechanism possible, is not a choice, it's a priority. You have to make that a priority in your life or you just won't win. The way you treat money is the way you'll receive money. A coach isn't there to hold your hand and get you out of bed. That's not what they're for. A coach is there so you can use their wisdom to point you in the right direction so you don't make the same mistakes. Social media is about attention. This day in age, there's no real new. How can I disrupt attention? Social media is not a place to sell, so don't treat it like that. It's just a tool to get somebody on your email list. In entrepreneurship, we need to be our biggest critic. We have to be hard on ourselves. But we have to be our biggest forgiver as well, because we're gonna mess up every day. If you build relationships consistently, it makes life a heck of a lot easier. You see these people build these businesses and it looks like it happened overnight, but they've really been building relationships their whole life. Embrace the challenges, because they're gonna happen. Business is hard. It's the hardest game you'll ever play. With entrepreneurship, there's a lot of risk involved.
