His style is strong and sweet, similar to Jah Cure - who arrived on the scene 10 years after Quench Aid. A wicked and severely underrated singer!  John Wayne is a Jamaican dancehall deejay who's bigger hit was the wadadadeng-ish 'Call The Police' from 1985, on the 'Sleng Teng' riddim. In 1983 he recorded an album called 'Boogie Down', produced by Bunny Lee. Also an in-demand sound engineer, he worked on Sugar Minott's 1981 albums 'Meet The People In A Lovers Dubbers Style' and 'African Girl'…  Quench Aid and John Wayne are original dancehall killah artists, they collaborated together in 2004 for a 45 released on the small Bam Salute label from France, 'Don't Go Girls', now re-produced and re-mixed by the King producer Grant Phabao, who's roots reggae and ska recordings have been ruling the Jamaican music world for many years now. Before releasing some long-awaited new material later this year, Les Freres Smith and Paris DJs offer you a cover of Fela Kuti's 'Opposite People' captured last summer at the amazing Roskilde Festival in Denmark.  Recorded in binaural so that you may hear the music just as if you were there, the whole Smith family hopes you'll enjoy this live take at one of the biggest European festivals. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and get ready to dance! PS check this little video out if you miss a dance step or two.  'Opposite People' is a 1977 Fela classic regularly played and appreciated by Les Freres Smith. Long trance rhythms, powerful horn themes and solos, heavy vintage keyboards and a strong, barely abstract, political message about the colonial mentality, upper class corruption, and more particularly its ability to abuse and impose its vision even if it's opposite to the one of the people.  The artwork, by band member Elvis Martinez Smith, is a hijack (or tribute, or both!) of a 1982 poster by Thami Mnyele for the 'Culture and Resistance' festival organised by the Medu Art Ensemble, in Gaborone, Botswana (read more about this movement here). Their story, ideology and actions in South Africa at the time are similar to Fela's crusade and more particularly to the social meaning of the song 'Opposite People', focusing on the disparities, growing gaps and walls between social classes. The song starts on a killer chorus hook before slipping into an unstoppable flow of no less surprising verses, filled with wiki-accuracy, wicked rhymes and dynamic rub-a-dub gimmicks. The reggae groove itself is relentless, tight and bumpy, like 70s Jamaica sounding heavy.  While chillin' with Jamaican singers The Lone Ranger, Jim Brown and Carlton Livingston a few weeks ago at Paris DJs studios, Djouls and Grant Phabao asked them what they should do with the song, with the 2012 Olympic Games happening very fast and the buzz around Usain Bolt growling like thunder… The Jamaicans all replied instantly that the track should be put up and spreading, that all the "but what if he doesn't win this time?" doubts should be erased because there was "no way" he was gonna lose. Being asked "how do you know that?", the Paris DJs operators were offered the most simple answer: "because he is Usain Bolt". A 100% authentic Jamaican legend from the big years of Studio One Records, The Lone Ranger has been bringing back the golden years of rub-a-dub lately with the Soul Stereo Soundsystem in clubs, with Jamaica All Stars on stage at the Garance Reggae Festival 2012, or in the studio with Grant Phabao, one of the rare producers to have restored the sound of 1970s' Jamaica.  Based in Paris, Grant Phabao works with many reggae legends, but also international artists such as George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic), David Byrne (Talking Heads), Chuck D. Son of radical vietnam veteran father &amp; Okinawan mother J-san was raised on the road, living with artists, musicians, ganja growers and hustlers. He was an original member of John Brown's Body in the 90s, then went on to form dub rock/jam band J-san &amp; The Analogue Sons during the the next decade, a band described as Bob Marley meets M.I.A. produced by Manu Chao… After a few featurings, including vocalist on 10ft Ganja Plant's album Bush Rock released in 2009, J-san has launched two new bands, Double Tiger, an electronic dub / dubstep project who's just released the No Give Up single on Hydra Records Japan, and J-san and The Big Mean, a rock/reggae/afro project fusing the rhythms of Afrobeat and R&amp;B with the sounds of Dub and Soul to make your body move. He was twice voted number 1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ('bim' and 'ribbit' were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time.  Paris DJs are giving you the opportunity to remix the Lone Ranger/Grant Phabao tribute to Steve Jobs track 'The Iphone Connection', the first single from the brand new Paris DJs label, available on iTunes.  The vocal acapella from the song is available to download below (the original version of the tune being available here). We want you to build your own unique track behind The Lone Ranger's amazing vocals and let his producer Grant Phabao decide who has created the best remix. Well you put musicians in a studio, what happens? They play together, so Marco ended playing organ and then clavinet for a reggae remix of Simmerdown Phabao was working on… This track was hidden in our closet for a year, and when we learned that Nostalgia 77 was coming on play in Paris on February 16th at La Bellevilloise, we offered his label, Tru Thoughts, to put it up for free as a virtual release on Paris DJs. It was recorded at Paris DJs studios just a few days before Steve Jobs passed away. Jamaican DJ The Lone Ranger is on vocal duties with French dubmeister Grant Phabao at the controls &amp; playing all instruments.  The Lone Ranger is one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs. He was twice voted N°1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ("bim" and "ribbit" were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time. He had originally recorded The Walkman Connection way back in 1984 (on "DJ Daddy" / Techniques), now fully updated to 2011 as The Iphone Connection ! Marco sent us this free track for the collaborative Paris DJs mix #300 but missed the spot by just a few days... It's a Galt McDermot cover, you've heard the original already in the 1968 movie The Thomas Crown Affair AND it's been sampled many times. It should get stuck in your head after just the first listen, and features Andrew Barr on drums and Dave Dreiwitz on bass. Well, that's what happened for me so I thought I couln't pass on sharing this one with everybody. His label The Royal Potato Faily agreed right away so here it is. The band is playful and fun, sounding like early stuff from The Herbaliser with a distininguished French taste for Jazz musings. Their album will be out january 2012.  Meanwhile, they've asked many of their friends for remixes and the n°1 reggae producer worldwide, Grant Phabao, who had already worked with Lawkyz in the past on some still unreleased tracks with Amayo from Antibalas, agreed to put his magic hands on the Mr Blue piece.
